Will the prices for GPU and memory chips push the PC gaming business deeper into the hole from which they cannot extricate themselves? Looks like my Thunderbolt display has "ventilation openings," no fan.
Don’t operate your display in areas with significant amounts of airborne dust, or smoke from cigarettes, cigars, ashtrays, stoves, or fireplaces, or near an ultrasonic humidifier using unfiltered tap water. Tiny airborne particles produced by smoking, cooking, burning, or using an ultrasonic humidifier with unfiltered water may, in rare instances, enter the *ventilation openings* of your display and, under certain conditions, result in a slight haze on the inside surface of the glass panel that covers the display. I am also grateful for the conversation of the other posters. I tried not to tune into news most of the day. It felt good
At the gardens yesterday morning I saw a hummingbird, and lovely flowers including Black Eyed Susans, Purple Topped Vervain , Swamp Rose Mallow and Great Blue Lobelia. There were also toadstools the size of very small unbrellas if you are an elf. There were also lovely people including two co workers ( I think ) one of whom wished that I had a blessed day and a women sitting on a bench in the garden who told me she was enjoying the bird song . The world didn't end because someone invented hydraulics. The world didn't end when we discovered the lever or the wheel. And the world won't end just because AI can do some things faster than a human can.
AI is just another machine. Use it to your advantage, or don't. The fretting that we face annihilation because it's "smarter than us" is a red herring. Of course it's "smarter than us", that's the point of it. There are about four billion people on earth who have at least four billion other people who are "smarter than them", and they're not all facing an apocalypse. Most people can bench more than I can, and i'm not dead yet. I don't fear AI itself. What I fear is what a clever huckster (or worse) can do with it. "Can do"? Sorry, I meant "will". 17 Hello Techsters,
Will the prices for GPU and memory chips push the PC gaming business deeper into the hole from which they cannot extricate themselves? I am not a gamer but at one point they were a huge portion of the PC market. The dearth of new games and huge memory usage pre price explosion started the collapse. Posted by: Pete Bog at August 11, 2026 05:07 AM (U9xiT) It hasn't reached critical, yet, but it has caused some gaming studios to begin to actually optimize their games better since so many people can't upgrade their RAM or GPUs due to prices. The next real hurdle comes next year or '28 when Xbox and Sony release their new consoles and then the gaming industry will tailor their games to meet the new tech's specs. We can only cross our fingers and wait for the bubble to pop or deflate and bring prices back down to Earth. If it keeps up for more than a year or two a lot of PC & Gaming focused companies will be bankrupt. Posted by: SpeakingOf at August 11, 2026 05:28 AM (6ydKt) 34
To really drag the ass out of the comparison... the danger of AI isn't that it's smart, it's that so many people think it's smarter than it is.
Just as most of the world's most dangerous people are those who others think are much, much smarter than they are. Posted by: Warai-otoko at August 11, 2026 05:29 AM (Ot/FD) 35

@17/Pete Bog: "Will the prices for GPU and memory chips push the PC gaming business deeper into the hole from which they cannot extricate themselves?"
It's going to hurt them somewhat. Not sure it'll be a hole they can't get out of but you should expect to see a lot of layoffs. They will have to focus on producing games for the hardware that most people already own because gamers aren't buying a whole lot of new machines or custom parts because of the insane prices of memory, gpus, and storage right now. What will further keep them on building games for existing/older hardware is the damage to the hardware sales channels (wholesale and retail) that will happen if they can't sell to end customers due to the prices. The first sign will minimal staffing. The second sign will be the sale and lack of restocking of lower priced items as the stores start to canibalize themselves to stay afloat. After that it's the "Going out of business" or liquidation sale, at which point it's already too late to save them. Once again: This bubble can not pop fast enough. Some just run a search through their entire database and you get back anything that remotely resembles your search terms. If you've got a large parts catalog, like auto parts or industrial supply, it's a beast to corral that much data. You've got to find one or two sites that you like these days, and stick with them. RockAuto is pretty good with their search interface as an example. Posted by: SpeakingOf at August 11, 2026 05:58 AM (6ydKt) 68

Steve Burke at Gamers Nexus did a video last week about AI crawlers scanning his website to lift all the information, charts, and other results on the products they've tested over the years.
Because Steve has this crazy idea that people should come to his website to read his reviews and testing results, he's kind of P.O.'d at the AI corps. So to help solve this problem he got together with Wendell at Level1Techs and came up with an idea to embed a tiny graphic within his other charts and graphs. That tiny graphic contains a lot of text readable only by AI. So in addition to the info in the charts, AI is also getting such things as: "Nose-Normalized Chocolate Chip Cookies - 27 dBA Full Torture Edition" with ingredient such as: "2 Large Eggs, preferably with unobstructed front intake". It seems like a wonderful (and entertaining) idea to me. I've been bitching about this for a long while. Google is some kind of perverse anti-search engine. It works well for very little now. It's hard to believe it's not intentional because you normally have to try to suck this hard. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at August 11, 2026 05:54 AM (g9zlb) Here's my concern. As AI grows in importance to these companies, all the tools and means by which they curated and made searchable information will wither and die or at least never be improved. The copper landlines of the internet, so to speak. This may surprise them, but some of us are quite good at looking for information. I have spent the better part of a year on Google Scholar running down literature articles on single-site olefin polymerization catalysts. The search engine for GS is hopeless. The organization of results is worse. Exporting results is a joke. I spent a month plugging 6900 digital object identifiers into it one at a time looking for citations with an attached PDF. @82/NR Pax: "and don't be afraid to walk away."
This works as the seller too. A friend of mine was trying to sell his property, and they have an agreement in principle already on a price and conditions. Then he gets a call from his real-estate agent with a bunch of mostly-last-minute demands the buyer tried to saddle him with or they'd walk away from the purchase. (The buyers were Chinese, and apparently this type of negotiation strategy is common with them, at least in this geographic area.) My friend's response? "We walk away. The deal's off if they don't take the original deal we agreed on." The response got delivered. The buyer gave the go-ahead to proceed with the purchase on the original terms, and paperwork got signed accordingly. The real estate agent later told my friend he loved his hard-line response. Most people cave, and give away a bunch of money they didn't have to, because they're desperate to sell, and that's why buyers try that crap. He said it was a joy to be working with someone who wasn't desperate because he didn't get the option to deliver "F you, take it or leave it" terms very often. As for the results of all this, I had 7628 journal references. Of those, 1962 had attached documents, or a little over 25%. I'm now writing to some of the bigger investigators in the field asking for reprints. My hope is that this will push it up to about 35%. Then what? Sufficient unto the day are the evils thereof. I'll think of something. I will have on the order of 9000 patent documents from the US, EP and PCT. It will take one day to search for those, export a nice spreadsheet and organize them. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at August 11, 2026 06:23 AM (O7YUW) We had a similar situation. Found a house we liked well enough to make an offer on. Wee, highest bidder at asking price. Seller's realtor relays some insane page-long letter by the seller of all these baffling, self-contradicting little technicalities and conditions and obfuscations for us to abide by. We told our realtor "Absolutely not." Any counter offer? Yeah, sure we got a counter offer, but it wouldn't be polite to say out loud. She happily sent along our two word response verbatim. Last night we watched on DVD a 1951 drama with Bette Davis and Barry Sullivan, Payment on Demand. It's part of the "Warners Classics Collection," but no closed captions. Grrrr.
Still, pretty solid drama, with Bette and Barry as a suburban couple (he's a lawyer) who have been married for twenty years and have two grown girls. (One was played by Betty Lou, some years later to be Barney's girlfriend on Andy Griffith.) Suddenly he wants a divorce -- still a shocking subject in 1951, I guess. She's gotten to be so focused on success and social climbing that he doesn't recognize her anymore. Davis plays the woman's present-day self -- and the younger version in flashbacks -- with her usual style. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 11, 2026 06:59 AM (wzUl9) 139

Posted by: RandomDave (if you can spare a bit, please click) at August 11, 2026 *** It is. Davis's character goes from a happy young bride who helps her newly-minted lawyer husband in his fledgling office, to what another, more established woman says is a "ruthless social climber," and then to a woman who deliberately and coldly demands *everything* in their divorce. She discovers, though, that being alone in life is not something she wants. @125/Mister Scott: "We were not happy and told the real estate agent we would have never went to see the house if they had told us that upfront."
There are a LOT of tire-kicking buyers who will waste your time when you're selling. They have various motives, a lot of it is boredom though. I hate these people SO much, they just gum up the works. Agents around here are legally required to bring you every offer, and I think these timewasting idjits know this. Surprisingly, there are apparently a lot of sellers who are the mirror___ of these tire-kickers, throwing sand in the gears of a potential deal because it amuses them. Keep the deal's terms simple and stick to them. It's not difficult. The perfect close-date, the seller has moved everything out and is already gone by zero hour. The place is relatively clean and almost ready to move in after a couple of hours of effort. Second to that is this: https://youtu.be/27i9LoNJshA Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at August 11, 2026 07:15 AM (O7YUW) 169
I could use some Expert Advice on dog baths. Miss Dixie, being a Dandie Dinmont terrier and all, is not a Water Dog. She is an Anti-Water dog. Then, when he didn't expect it, I'd scoop him up and pop him into the carrier head first. He'd stick out his back paws to resist, but I'd get him packed into the slammer. He'd turn and come up to the gate as I was locking it. Always I expected him to nip my fingers, but he never did, just gave me a look that said, "Okay, you win this round, but next time --!" Considering I moved him to a new apartment almost every two years of his life, he had a right to be bothered.
