Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Night ONT - August 12, 2026 [TRex] Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and (mostly) re-stocked with Tab. Only the best for the Horde... Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. If you're a troll, go away. This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please. There's a lot of ignored wisdom out there. Third, speaking of the laptop class, the press is much, much worse than I thought it was at the beginning of this exercise, and I was pretty skeptical about the press then.Read the whole thing. Heh. Thijs de Buck, an MRI physicist based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, recently posted on Reddit that he built a speed and distance tracker for his hamster's wheel, with the data automatically uploaded to Mollie's own Strava account. Mollie, his 10-month-old hamster, is now committed to logging nightly runs with distance, pace, and time. One recent activity showed 6.06 miles in 4 hours and 37 minutes. The next night, Mollie logged 5.55 miles in 3 hours and 56 minutes. And the little guy's not exactly phoning it in. De Buck said Mollie is averaging almost 10 kilometers per night, with a current record of 10.8 kilometers after the first week of tracking. "I really believe he'll be able to exceed that soon," he said. Mollie also has a weirdly consistent schedule for a hamster. Over one seven-day stretch, he started within the same 10-minute window on five nights, between 9:54 and 10:04 p.m. He tends to run in short bursts, sometimes reaching about 4 to 5 kilometers per hour on the live monitor, then hops off for water. Let's pause a bit and talk about the 'rules' for callsigns. It's rumored that Air Force fighter jocks get to pick their own callsigns... which is where you get things like 'Ripper' and 'Ace' and 'Thor.' Not in the Navy. Callsigns are bequeathed for doing something stupid or memorable. The more you fight the more it sticks. Usually a new guy in a squadron is given something like 'FNG' (Fucking New Guy) or 'New Jack' or 'Don't Speak.' Eventually, someone does something noteworthy, and the King (or Queen) of the JOPA [Junior Officer Protection Agency] calls a kangaroo court known as a 'callsign review board.' ![]() Some of it feels a little like a science class. Some of it feels a little like a technology class. Some of it feels like madness and giggles purely for the sake of having fun. Over 45 million people have watched their video on how a TV works. Their video showing popcorn popping has over 24 million views. Spinning a record to pieces? Spinning a CD to destruction? Paint vibrating on a speaker? Airbag deploy? Camera shutter? They've got it all. When things happen so quickly, we miss what really happens. They've been at it for 15 years and have over 15 million subscribers. This is a favorite: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is no truth to the rumor that TRex is set to be announced as the new White House Press Secretary. I'm so old I remember (I was in 7th grade) the original song "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James and the Shondells. I had a transistor radio, man. I liked it. However, I did not understand most lyrics of songs til college as I was still playing sports with boys. I did not know what they were hiding (a slow learner).
I do remember memorizing the Periodic Table in pre-med chemistry with many college boys. Who were apparently as traumatized by the university class as I was as no one asked me out. It remains a mystery, as I was finally ready. Hope you all are well and fighting commies and muzzies daily. Goodnight. Not in the Navy. Callsigns are bequeathed for doing something stupid or memorable. The more you fight the more it sticks. In my scout troop, the youths set one rule, "Own Your Nickname, We're Not Changing It". One time a scout noted that he had no nickname despite hsving been in the troop for a couple of years. I informed him that one almost always acquired a nickname after having done something extremely stupid. From this, the young man told his mother that "Mr. Krebs thinks I'm smart." "Why is that?" "Because he said you earn a nickname if you do something stupid, and I have no nickname." I told his mother that I never said that he had not done stupid things. What had bappened was, of the many stupid things he had done, none rose to the level of being stupid enough to call down a nickname upon him. We got screwed out of black Superman. We deserve this. As trans onscreen representation takes a hit in Hollywood, Lilly Wachowski is attempting to make a film with an all-transgender cast… if only the industry will let her. The Matrix co-auteur recently explained that despite some excitement over the script, financiers “really don’t want to make” her dystopian political thriller The Hunted, which is co-written with partner Mickey Ray Mahoney and budgeted at $10 million, due to the film’s “wall-to-wall trans cast.” “People like it, but they really don’t want to make it because it’s wall-to-wall trans cast,” said Wachowski on KCRW’s The Business podcast. “I have to get creative and figure out different ways that I can get this in front of people.” Posted by: Stateless - Keeping 15 year old Ralphy happy and alive. I'd think that you wouldn't want to lick Lithium at all. Wouldn't the moisture from your tongue make it go 'splody 'splody? Posted by: Darrell Harris Sure, it might, or at least burst into flame, in addition to giving you one hell of a tongue burned by caustic. Thing is, though, reactive metals like the alkalis are stored in an oil to stop them being exposed to air or water, so you'd have to contend with that gustatory delight first and foremost, as it would coat the metallic morsel. One of the most unique call signs for a Naval aviator had to be Pager 'ROT' Page.
One night he had to land a Turkey at Moffett Field near San Francisco in horrible weather. On final a wind shear grabbed hold of his plane and only by going to full burners was he able to save himself and the plane. The base commander duly got an angry letter in the mail from a regular complainer demanding to know 'when will this Reign of Terror' will end? The angry letter was forwarded to Page's CO. So his callsign became ROT. Posted by: Anna Puma at August 12, 2026 10:37 PM (2GVsD) 107

Not entirely. Real callsigns are assigned - albeit less formally - by others. Sometimes they get assigned right out of pilot training*. Some people manage to not do anything ... notable after that. Others get picked up for being an oddball or quirky**. And not just pilots, but crewmembers and anyone pilot-adjacent. Now, some people are lame enough they do pick their own. Nobody cares enough to assign them one. Nobody socializes enough with them to see the sorts of social faux pas that often lead to them. (* "Flame-face" Martin. Yes, there was alcohol involved.) Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at August 12, 2026 10:57 PM (Cqx++) I forget. It might just be something that sits at too high a temperature for too long? I would say Brit Lass's beeswax went considerably higher than 212. I recall reading some things were worse than others. It's also bad luck because it has to do with existing bubbles in the glass. I personally wouldn't heat anything in pyrex in the microwave for very long. Posted by: ... at August 12, 2026 11:03 PM (vE0+H) 163

Old Pyrex is great. New Pyrex is shit.
They are using a different kind of sand or something now. A few years ago I bought new Pyrex to cook Christmas Eve dinner. Took it out of the oven and it exploded. Posted by: four seasons ----- Uppercase label - PYREX is made in Europe and uses the original formulation of Borosilicate glass. Lower case(sort of sloppy font) label is American and cheap need it up.years ago using tempered "regular" glass. You will have pain but it is going to get better every single day. I had 2 c-sections and remembered all the nurse teaching I gave. 1) You will be asked to take deep breaths and cough to rid lungs of remnant anesthesia gunk. Brace your belly with a pillow and hold it. You need to do this to prevent pnemonia. Also use the incentive spirometer. You don't realize how much you use your abdominal muscles when you sneeze. Brace, baby, brace with that pillow for a few days as it helps. 2) The first time you get out of bed it will hurt. After that not as bad. Keep moving and it gets better daily. You will do well and I want to hear how well you are doing. XXXX Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at August 12, 2026 11:26 PM (hzuYO) 211

Sorry for such a day-walker question, and don't answer if you don't want to go there, but what's with those 5 empty USB drives in Wisconsin? Like, election officials at some polling place(s) failed to properly download data and it wasn't discovered until these 5 sticks were delivered to... a tabulation center? Line workers, only wedding rings. No one was allowed other jewelry like watches, bracelets or necklaces. (Some of the younger brats employees defied the rules with their "body jewelry" and got away with eyebrow rings and snotrings and nose-studs. Ick.) Posted by: JQ at August 13, 2026 12:37 AM (rdVOm) I wore my wedding ring for one week. I was coming down a ladder and there was a #8 finishing nail sticking out of a 2x4 and it slipped under the ring. Had I decided to hop off the ladder at that instant, as I usually did, it would have ripped my finger off. Never wore any kind of ring after that, no jewelry of any kind, not even a watch. Well, the lazy fiberglass resin on my dune buggy body did eventually harden overnight. At least it had gelled, and gotten some body to it. I made a few passes with a heat gun, which helped a lot, and then mixed some hardener with acetone, and brushed it on, which I think ended the surface tackiness. I have a wedding ring in my jewelry box, along with cufflinks I rarely wear either.
Dealing with some high current electric stuff for years, I was never comfortable wearing it. I explained this to my wife about 2 months after we were married, and she had no problem with me not wearing it. Now that I'm retired, I got it out... and it doesn't fit. Which is not surprising because I weigh about 60# more than the day we were married. In the army, I and my cow-orkers would get regularly hassled for not wearing my dog tags. Finally, had some General write us notes, like in high school, giving us permission to carry them in our pockets. Carried that piece of paper in my wallet. Bending over a piece of equipment featuring 350V B battery and having your dog tags swing into it was not anything any of us wanted to experience. It's a demand thing. The eclipse was going to happen there when people were getting off work, which is a peak demand period. And they're dependent on the solar farms for some fraction of generation, and the heat wave and high market prices cut into what reserves they had. It's just a stupid thing that anybody with any knowledge would know would be a problem with solar and other "renewable" sources. Tthey are unreliable -- there are these things called clouds that cause that the solar irradiance curve to be quite erratic, and wind is erratic. Erratic and unpredictable is not what you need for power generation. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 13, 2026 01:47 AM (w6EFb) 394

They are working on Element 120 now. There is a predicted island of stability way up there with certain magic numbers of neutrons. The problem is they can get the desired number of protons, but getting something with the predicted stable number of neutrons is much harder to do. Element 118 there is named Oganesson. It should be a noble gas. But it is not. Well, it's not predicted to be -- they don't enough of a sample of it to actually see what it would be like. The nucleus has so much positive charge the inner shell electrons are "orbiting" near light speed, and there are strong relativistic effects which just mess the expected classical behavior up. It will be solid, and likely a semiconductor at room temp, they think. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 13, 2026 02:02 AM (w6EFb) 406

Well, this got me off on a nuclear tangent. There are other islands of stability predicted at higher Z's, 126, and way up at 164. This would be *massive* nuclei indeed. And beyond that, there is some theoretical reasoning that a "continent of stability" might exist well beyond that. At that level, you would have nuclei as we think of it, but a quark soup. This would be quark matter for the nucleus. And yes, it could still form atoms of a sort with electrons around it. This would be truly "exotic matter", beyond any of our kin. Who the hell knows what it would be like. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 13, 2026 02:32 AM (w6EFb) 443

The way I see it, 1. we can be sure there is an 'AI' bubble because of the refusal of the big memory manufacturers to build out capacity, and 2. there is only one rather convoluted way for that bubble to pop in a copacetic way.
For the bubble to pop, they have to see that their bets won't pay out the way they hope. For it to pop gently, they still have to pay out a bit. And we need for them to be at least somewhat wrong, since their bets are so massive I suspect that for them to fully pay off, we'd all be paying them for every bit of compute we need. Personal computers exploded in popularity for a reason, and a world without them would be a human dystopia. There is a narrow channel of possibility where both the things we need can happen. A technology that enhances productivity can improve the value of the employee to the employer, if it is not able to replace him entirely, due to enabling the creation of more saleable value per man-hour. If the bubble pops from realization that there is no GenAI coming, no "synthetic cognition" or 'singularity', just another productivity tool, then maybe it could pop gently and in a pro-employment way. So, I know what to pray for. Posted by: SciVo at August 13, 2026 04:02 AM (Sy6m/) 492

Going to bed soon to at least get a nap. Got to pick up the car today. It's sick. Took it in for one problem, turned out to be several. All self inflicted. I'm lazy, it back fired. It's an old Honda (12 years old) and it runs fine. Probably why I didn't realize I had a cracked timing belt. Plus other stuff that falls apart with age. It's going to cost a mint but I can cover it. I budget well.

I'm awake, after a fashion, and having coffee of course. Little gray Dagny La Siberienne was curled on the couch in my spot when I got up. I scooped her up and popped her onto a cushion on my lap, and she stayed for two whole minutes before realizing, "I'm The Cat Who Walks By Herself" and vaulting away.
The trouble with being up this early is that I'm getting hungry, yet I don't want to go work out quite yet. Though I'm certainly not going to wait until it gets light at six am. First World Problems. . . . Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 13, 2026 04:18 AM (wzUl9) 508

Wolfus-
You have interesting dreams. Do they ever seem like the basis for a story? Posted by: Miklos has enough real life material at August 13, 2026 *** Yes. I dreamed that I ran into the ex-Mrs. Wolfus No. 2, and it scared me, so that I wrote a story in which a man and a woman, two old lovers, meet. During the course of their conversation, we realize that they used to abduct, torture, and murder young runaway girls back in the "good old days." A very disturbing story for sure. Puddleglum, a twelve-year-old Honda is just getting well broken in.
My Buick hit 100,000 miles yesterday evening. On the way to the book club meeting, I saw it had 99,999, so I drove into a bank parking lot and made a few circles until it clicked over. Miss Linda took a pic of the odometer. Not bad for a ten-year-old car, 65K of it under my ownership. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 13, 2026 04:31 AM (wzUl9) 520

It is interesting to contemplate how back in the day, Boy George was naturally compared and contrasted with the poorly closeted George Michael (came out in '9
The latter had undeniable talent, but apparently some kind of psychological pain that he took out on himself. I'm surprised to read that he made it to 53, surviving drugs, pneumonia, and a coma, before falling to heart disease on Christmas Day in 2016.
