I temporarily lost my water again this morning while a utility crew dug up my street. Seems to have been a short outage, however, as the water is now back on again.
So far I've lost both power and water at least twice each this summer.

And it works. That's why they do it.

Saturday. Dropped the boy child off at a birthday party. Took the girl child to the grocery store. Filled car with $300 worth of groceries. Headed home. Stopped at a red light. When the light changed, the giant, ultra-lifted truck behind me simply drove over the back of my car. Driver stated that I was too low for him to see. The other driver's insurance SHOULD cover everything that happened to my car.
Limped home, unpacked the groceries I could.
Less than half an hour later, a microburst front blew through with 70mph winds. Four mature trees down. Kids' trampoline folded in half. Siding ripped off the house. Four separate power line poles were snapped clean off by falling trees.
I've learned that wind damage is unique in the insurance world and my deductible is $20,000. So my repairs will be entirely out of pocket.
In less than 90 minutes, in completely unrelated events, my house and car suffered significant damage.
The power is still out and the first day of school is tomorrow.

But the City's sewer did get plugged a month ago. Thank God it didn't back up into our basement, but a couple of neighbors weren't as lucky.

Saturday. Dropped the boy child off at a birthday party. Took the girl child to the grocery store. Filled car with $300 worth of groceries. Headed home. Stopped at a red light. When the light changed, the giant, ultra-lifted truck behind me simply drove over the back of my car. Driver stated that I was too low for him to see. The other driver's insurance SHOULD cover everything that happened to my car.
Limped home, unpacked the groceries I could.
Less than half an hour later, a microburst front blew through with 70mph winds. Four mature trees down. Kids' trampoline folded in half. Siding ripped off the house. Four separate power line poles were snapped clean off by falling trees.
I've learned that wind damage is unique in the insurance world and my deductible is $20,000. So my repairs will be entirely out of pocket.
In less than 90 minutes, in completely unrelated events, my house and car suffered significant damage.
The power is still out and the first day of school is tomorrow.

A very odd/late ripening of the meyer lemons (agriculture is hard) resulted in doing my second batch of preserves just last week. Typically it's all over by mid-January. But this year the tree had its own calendar. Might be that, after decades, it's living up to its "ever-bearing" (year-round) label. Because there a lot of green lemons that look about 1 month from being ripe.
Usually I wait til the end of the "crop" to make more limoncello, not sure I'll make any this year, as there's still plenty in the freezer.
Speaking of booze, these fresh meyers make a killer Sidecar, which is sort of like a brandy margarita, with lemon subbed in for lime. With our hot weather (for here), I find myself making one every other day before dinner. (ABK6 VS cognac, not expensive but good and very fruity, for the booze part)

I'll get the car to the shop when the adjuster gets done.
The only real struggle I forsee is the siding repair. I've called half a dozen places and every one of them said they'd reside the entire house, but don't do repairs.

I live on a barrier island and own a short-term rental on the beach. Confirmed this Saturday (turn day) both loggerhead nests in front of my house were compromised by TS Bertha. First time in 20 years I had two nests; now there are none. Still possible might have another nest, but watching these little guys rush to the surf, guided by the moon, probably won’t happen this year.

I got one rated at 2500 psi. A name brand, not Chinesium junk. There's no way it's actually 2500 psi. Maybe it gets close to that with the "laser" nozzle. But with the other nozzles, no way.
Which is fine for me, as you're not supposed to use more than maybe 1500 to wash a car with PPF. But anyone thinking they're getting genuine 2500 is gonna be disappointed.

The initial process was developed for bottles, but the inventor moved to England where there was a better developed steel and tinplate industry that could produce specialty cans at a lower price than glass.
The cans were lighter and more durable which was a positive since the first trials were done by the Royal navy.
Home canning developed out of stoneware (mostly) crocks that were sealed with fat or paraffin, and covered with parchment. This is an old technique and I am told that you can find "bog butter" tuns in bogs where foodstuff was preserved in butter buried in peat bogs, and the Romans also had a similar process

The Russian standard for home canning uses a wide mouth jar that has a lid crimped on like a crown cap on a soda bottle. It is the weirdest thing to watch, it needs a specialty crimper like what is used to seal fittings onto Pex piping.

Over the weekend, I saw a scrum on Youtube over words. The word was "deist", which somebody claimed was "closer to atheism than Christianity", which is an odd way to describe what the Founders wrote about "Providence" and when Jefferson said "I tremble to think that the Lord is Just", and also given that Jefferson, in his farewell address is the one founder who identifies the "Creator" he believes in as the "God of Israel".
Another said that it's either the case that there was a "contradiction" in the premise that (in some sense) America was a "Christian Nation" and that we could have freedom.
But atheists that just decided to take their simple brain into a new arena, neglect that they left a system where you aren't measured on brain function and entered into one where that is the main claim.

Which is fine for me, as you're not supposed to use more than maybe 1500 to wash a car with PPF. But anyone thinking they're getting genuine 2500 is gonna be disappointed

One very slow day, my platoon sergeant sent me alone to the motor pool, and suggested I power wash a specific truck that was going into maintenance. The engine bay. It took me a while to figure out how to start this thing, but it was not only a pressure washer, but it was boiling hot steam pressure. That thing worked REALLY REALLY GOOD. It melted decades of built up crap like it was nothing. I'm sure they are illegal by now.

If you have to replace it, LP Smart Side works well with good paint on it. The early 80's version was a flop but the newer version is fast, easy to cut, has borates in for bug resistance, and holds paint better than natural products or for that matter hardiplank.
We had to replace some of our natural cedar siding with it and it simply works. And it was easy and light enough to diy it. Hardiplank is a beast if you don't have the right tools and to do it right requires steps that are not needed for LP Smartside. Nasty dusty cuts require respirators too with Hardi or its variants.

What I don't have is a way to get safely up and down. I think I'd need scaffolding. It's a two-story, but cut into a hillside, so the back of the house is substantially more than two.

Rent mason's scaffolding from the local equipment rental place. Not hard to set up but follow safety rules. Easy peasy. Move teh scaffold around when finished. If it wasn't siding, a towed bucket lift is also useful but expensive hourly compared with scaffolding.

My Dad was a quad and his wheelchair cost 15 grand, I just can't get over that some Dr in the UK just ok'd her getting one. I remember when I found a off road type wheelchair so my Dad could chase after his Grand kids that was 25 grand and this bitch gets one.

I plant beans now in the plot after I dig the potatoes out of it. They get mature enough to can before the frost kills the plants, they are the last thing I do.
Honestly, I don't much like green beans since I used to work in the cannery locally for years.

And Nearsider, avoid Baker's scaffolding as you can go pretty high with it but it has a narrow base and is designed for level ground ops, not offset hillsides. Masonry scaffolding is designed for heavy weight plus adapting to the local terrain.
If you must go back with vinyl, get the insulated type as it is heavier and more rigid and less prone to damage by heat and wind. You gain a bit on insulation value but make sure to put some sort of rainshield--space with furring strips/or clips and underneath good ole tar paper or the newer high tech types like slicker screening by Benjamin Opdyke.
Don't use the Tyvek type as it is not really designed for that. You want spacing so moisture can leave the house but being blocked from entry.

I started a new job 4 months ago and I did have a 3 month trial period. Of course at my seniority level it was completely pro forma because they weren’t gonna hire someone at my level and a relo package if they weren’t already sure

Although, you try to keep your ego in check, especially if you're more "skeptic" like I was, when I stopped believing in a God, that feeling that I must be smarter--or even "more woke" (And Lindsay wonders where the edge of this idea lies). You think "clearer mind", maybe, sure. But why are you in a situation where you have a "clearer mind", it must be a choice you made, and you must have made a superior choice. And this is only kicking the can down the road to avoid the feeling that I probably made a better choice, not by accident, but by some feature in me.
To me, some semblance of "smarter" is attendant to the practice of eschewing faith.
There is talking and thinking about stuff due to genuine curiosity and there is talking and thinking about stuff to prove you have an intellect and are "different". Guess which kind litters academia.

Note well - absent coercion, no Insurance company would write a policy for a drunk driver, ever. Because, that would be stupid.
SR22 is a carve-out, that they were able to achieve. You put all the drunks in a special pool of high risk drivers with high risk rates.

Oh, and Washington Nearsider, construction rental places are used to delivery and picking up the materials when you are done. Well worth it unless totally strapped and on scaffolding, I think you can normally get it by the week along with the workboards to go with it.
