Was just reading an article about FEL lasers that was patiently explaining why they are the future of chip manufacturing. I could comprehend every word, even some of the less technical jargon. When I finished the article I realized I couldn’t translate anything I had read into comprehensible English. Except Elon and laser good. Save semiconductor industry. Use a boatload of power.

13 In any case: I am up early, no blame to be cast upon Stirling. Both cats, oddly, were sleeping with me when I woke at four am. Coffee first, and then I have to decide whether I will work out (signs point to AYFKM??).

At nine I have a video tour of a new house possibility, a corner lot place, 2BR/1BA, basement and garage. Maybe I can get to Walmart and back before nine, and then run out for some things WM doesn't carry. Or, wait until ten and then handle my grocery run before lunch when it's hotter. Decisions . . .

20 Last night we watched a DVD of A Woman's Face, a 1941 drama with Joan Crawford. Let me go on record: I've never been a big fan of Joan, though she was very good on screen, and have never found her attractive. Yet in this film, oddly -- because she plays a bitter woman scarred since childhood who runs a blackmail operation -- she seems softer and more appealing than I've ever seen her. Melvyn Douglas plays the gifted surgeon who corrects her scar and gives her a new chance at life; Conrad Veidt ("Major Strasser" of Casablanca) is the impoverished nobleman she loves, and who wants her to murder his four-year-old cousin so he can inherit his uncle's fortune. AWF has the standard elements of a 1940s drama, but somehow they come together in a way that seems new.

Good, good stuff.

Yet I don't remember Dolly being on it . . . and I'm sure I would recall her. Even at age ten or eleven I was aware of and impressed by the prettiness of girls. Many locals in Vegas are disturbed that the local governments still approve endless new housing developments from one end of the valley to the other. Money is what the government wants from taxes and fees and endless houses where you can shake hands with your neighbor, the houses are so close to each other. Its even worse in the Phoenix area.

I just happened to notice that one of the four Faith No More music videos that I'd downloaded was *shorter* than the album version of the same song, so I checked the other three -- same thing. Longer I could understand, if they added some storytelling fluff before and after the music. Shorter implies they made a "video edit" like they make "radio edits."

But I have downloaded a lot of music videos, and if "video edits" are common, then that's a lot of potentially lesser versions I have taking up space. And there is no way I'm just going to systematically go through and compare them all with the album version. So it's just going to grate on me in the back of my mind.

I don't know if it's still true, but Phoenix was the only state capital with over 1M people. Atlanta isn't, as the actual city is smaller than 1M (the suburbs make it much, much bigger).

I chose not to remain in South Florida many decades ago after graduation for similar reasons. I prefer living in a boring community.

At least in Kalifornia, you have to stop of the STOP sign is extended on a bus, no matter what side of a road you are on...and that includes multi-lane roads...
So I was behind this bus, stop sign was out...for more than 5 minutes. I don't know what the going on with that bus. Eventually it started moving again...

Only for unsafe kids in the bus aisle. I had them beg me to stop.

I was waiting in Urgent Care this one time (I think I was in for a hematuria). There was a teenage girl with a toothpick in her foot. Did she try to remove it? Probably not...
I mean, sure, remove it cleanly, get a tetanus shot...but Urgent Care for that?

The missus has procured the speaker for our lapidary group's September meeting, so she is responsible for creating the meeting notice and introducing him. The meeting is online. She is a student of his (online) and a big admirer as well, but she was lamenting that she "can't write" yesterday. She requested my assistance. I started with the basic "name three things you like about this instructor" and I took her forward from there. Last night after I had cleaned up she brought me her final draft for review. A couple or two edits on my part and it was ready to go. Happy wife.

It won't remain so. Let me tell you about Ontario Canada...

When I was younger than 20, and I was walking the halls of any hospital in our province, every one was busy; doctors, nurses, orderlies, support staff, it felt like everyone had something to do, and the place looked and felt busy. Patients were taken care of quickly.

Compare to today - hospitals feels barely populated by staff. You almost expect tumbleweeds to roll down the halls. Patients are not taken care of quickly, and the wait time in ERs can be 14, 24, even 48 hours. People can die in the ER waiting room because there's so little staff. Demand is going up because we've got a bubble in the population that's aging out, who need medical treatment for things more frequently.

Socialized medicine worked for a while, until it didn't. Now it's just a barely functional disaster. We borrowed from the future too long to fund it. Future's here now. We're broke. Oops.
