THE MORNING RANT: About that “Bad” Jobs Report Last Week: Private-Sector Jobs Increased, Government Jobs Decreased
The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% as labor force participation continued to slide.Yes, “labor force participation” by non-citizens decreased. But the unemployment rate keeps falling as actual U.S. citizens gain employment. Buried in this Bloomberg piece is another interesting number:
Private-sector payrolls rose by 30,000 for a second month…So to be clear, private-sector employers are not actually shedding jobs, it’s government that is shedding jobs. As reported by NBC, the Bureau of Labor Statistics ”showed a 5,000 payroll gain in the manufacturing sector in July and an additional 22,000 roles in construction.” This CNBC piece further explains that ”The main reason for the red headline number was a loss of 53,000 government workers.” The math works, and I’m not terribly bothered by this math: 53,000 displaced government workers were mostly offset by 30,000 new private sector jobs, resulting in a net loss of 23,000. I’d like to see continued momentum in both of these inputs – more reductions in government employment and accelerating private-sector job creation. To be clear, I don’t wish economic harm to those displaced government workers. I’d like for them to find gainful employment in the private sector. I’m going to repeat myself on the political significance of reducing government employment. All of those “Reagan conservatives” in legacy media who incessantly state that “Trump is not a true conservative” spent decades promoting “smaller government.” Suckers like me contributed money and bought subscriptions, believing they meant it. They didn’t. Trump is now doing what Conservatism, Inc. pretended to advocate for, and now all those “Reagan conservatives” are allying with Democrats and the left to protect the government behemoth from Trump. Here are a few more headlines about who is losing their jobs in the “Trump economy”: “U.S. Employers Told to Dismiss Thousands of Immigrant Workers” [NY Times – 7/10/2026] “Federal workforce shrank 10% in Trump’s first year back in office” [Pew Research – 3/13/2026] “Employers Fear Labor Shortage as Many Immigrants Lose Protected Status” [NY Times – 7/26/2026] “Laid-off H-1B workers return to India, face lower pay as Big Tech expands GCCs” [The American Bazaar – 7/09/2026] “Is the American Dream fading? Inside the ‘reverse migration’ of Indian techies from US” [Firstpost – 8/034/2026] This is why Trump was elected. We need to be careful not to get swayed by headlines that conflate foreigners and government workers losing their jobs with what is going on regarding private-sector hiring of U.S. citizens. So, I presume the numbers being batted around do not include the uniformed armed services. 238K government drones out of work is probably about right for the number who are/were at/past retirement age.

I'm curious about what happens to govt spending numbers after a material exodus of govt employees. I assume the budgeted amount still gets spent, but pays out to NGOs who will soon sponge up the displaced workers.

It's down but federal salaries/benefits are just a rounding error in the federal budget compared with Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare. And that is where the easy pickings to eliminate fraud exist.
Frankly, we would get a better class of Congress critters if we took them off the private grift dole and actually paid them in consequence to their business decisions on the budget. Deficit--they don't get paid, Surplus, they get a big wad of cash. Ban all other outside income for them and their family.
I think Millei is trying that out in Argentina. It would take constitutional amendments here which simply are not going to happen.

The Vance led fraud task force has already uncovered more than $230 billion in fraud from government spending and he claimed that was a conservative estimate. Also stopped another $56 billion in fraud that was set to go out the door. And they are only 6 months into the process.
Sooner or later that is going to add up to real money.

Would it be inappropriate to hope that California gets at least a minor temblor that exposes, once again, the incompetence of Newsom and the one-party rules of that once Golden State?
Not wishing death upon our countrymen, but the nation needs to see just how dysfunctional Newsom and his Leftists have become in responding to issues.
If it spares us the possibility that Newsom could ever occupy the WH, a few billions in infrastructure damage might be worth it.

Not clear how that will work when the peasantry outside the cities in the US actually have a lot of firearms whereas peasants in France had no such thing. I think the author is referring to those in DC that keep referring to themselves as Reagan Republicans that are principled in comparison with the uncouth Trump. So you get endless crap from them about style, language, and manners-civility, while they promote the Democrat agenda.

I will. But I'm trying to work out a best time to retire. Outside of who is running the country, the next couple of years I should be preparing to execute on a retirement plan. If the Dems get back in, I have a fear they'll quickly confiscate everything I've saved up for decades in order to pay for housing all the new illegal migrants they will bring in and then I'll wish I kept my job to pay for food, utilities and property taxes.

I did after 59 & 1/2. In service withdrawal without the huge penalty. Did it in small enough increments that it didn't hit the tax side too bad.

The jobs numbers have been awful. No amount of "shifting thru the data" is going to solve that. I have never known so many people out of work and they've been out of work for a long time.
Trump's management of the economy has been a masterclass in mismanagement.
Govt ownership of companies? Raising taxes (sorry, tariffs) on businesses and consumers?
Are we really surprised job growth is stagnant (at best).
