I remember Lyle Lovett from the 1990s, And he has been an occasional presence on my various music lists since then. But I was reminded just how good he is last weekend at a friend's house, when he played a couple of Lovett songs I hadn't heard in a very long time, and in fact had forgotten!

That was a mistake. He is a fine singer, a fine guitar player, and a fine songwriter.

I don't know much about him other than his obvious talent. I don't know his politics or his sexuality or gender or favorite color...and I like it that way.

16 I had a great music run at the office today (I hadn't planned on going in today but I had to get ready for a hellacious week coming up). I blew through nonstop Bad Company, Robin Trower, 60's Stones and the newest Deep Purple. I had the Trower up real loud about the time my office mate's 3 teenagers brought him lunch. They couldn't get in my office fast enough to read the CD liner notes (I know these kids a bit) and to also sample the Bad C. I see this happen more and more. Mind you, these kids have musical talents themselves. There is hope. . . . the Millennials may be looking like lost causes, but Gen Z and Echoes are worth coaching.

19 I went to unique show years ago which was just Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, Joe Ely, and Joe Hiatt. They sat on stage and talked, and then one of them would do a solo song, whatever they liked. It was like watching 4 friends sitting on a porch on a Saturday evening, but the things they’d seen and talked about were fascinating!

Anyway they got talking about gigs they played with other bands at various joints, and it became apparent that Lyle had an absolutely perfect memory of every gig he’d played for the last 20 or 30 years, including the names and members of every band that he’d shared a gig with, and the order they’d played in that night.

I thought he was just a good musician - he’s one of those rare people who has an absolutely perfect photographic memory of every day of his life.

At a wedding a couple of years ago, all of the young people on the dance floor were enthusiastically moving to late 70's-mid 80's tunes - these were late Millennials, mostly. Very good point. Have a bunch of Tom Waits from his early years, when he was trying to be a jazz singer, but little of Lyle Lovett.

It was like they were trying to find their niche for a long time. Waits found his, but it was incongenial to me; Lovett never really connected.

54 A comment on a recent thread mentioned Michael Martin Murphey. I dug out his Cowboy Songs CDs. I had forgotten how good they are, both his approach to traditional songs and his own writing. I think his voice improved as he got older, like John Denver's voice, smoother and with more depth.

Never been a fan of country music, but the current hick-hop shit is turrrible, just turrible. We have a radio station that plays a lot of the old school music. Kind of a classic country station. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and the like. I tune into that because my wife likes the country, and I am a good sport. But I do notice that the new stuff is fucking garbage.

63 Mitch Miller's show was a staple for my parents and grandparents. I was young enough that my voice hadn't started to change. Thinking back, I wonder if that's where I got my notions of what chorus singing could produce. And as a kid I loved that bouncing ball with the lyrics.

I have all the .mp3 files and all the metadata, but to reconstruct the whole thing properly in an Excel spreadsheet will be a pain. Microsoft has no way to export file names and metadata from File Explorer to Excel.

My son and bride want to have a lot of kids. I would love to have granddaughter. We had sons. Nate Bragatze said it best, he has a daughter; friend dropped off his son for me to babysit, and he gave me a bobcat. He was instantly under the deck, chewing on wires.

Raising boys was awesome, but I would love to teach a granddaughter how to shoot.

When visiting Garmisch, John De Lancie suggested to Strauss that he write an oboe concerto. Strauss dismissed the idea at the time but eventually composed it (a very fine piece).

I'm rather surprised De Lancie, who was the Philadelphia Orchestra's first chair oboe after Tabuteau retired, never recorded it with Ormandy, a consummate Straussian.

Like virtually every other rock fan on the planet, I've been bingeing on concert clips from the current Rush tour, with Anika Nilles in Neil Peart's drum chair. Damn, that woman is a monster, killin' it in the toughest gig in rock music. Best part is, the whole band looks like they're having the time of their lives, laughing, with big grins on their faces. It helps that Alex and Geddy have always been a couple of cheerful goofballs.

They did pretty much an entire last set together and there was some insane chemistry between them going on.

Never seen that on-stage to such a level ever.

It was an awesome concert. One of those that makes you feel special that you were at that place at that time when that magic happened. What it's all bout.
