First World Problems...

Yes, that timer is old, and because I am a cheap bastard, I will continue to use it and continue to bitch and moan about it until it explodes in a shower of sparks.

It has many minuscule buttons and a multi-layered series of menus through which I have to wade to program the stupid thing to turn on at dusk and turn off around midnight. Or 11:30pm or 1:00am. I don't care. But I don't want it to turn on at dusk and...stay on until 9:47am! Or never turn on until 6:12am. And who needs seven different programs for some stupid outdoor lights? That is the definition of overkill.

To top off this amazingly irritating piece of equipment...it resets to some default internal program every time there is a power outage. And by "power outage" I mean every time the f*cking lights flicker during a thunderstorm!

Who bought this monstrosity?

35 Get an LED light bulb with a built-in photo-cell circuit, designed to turn-on automatically at dusk and off at dawn. Give or take 10 or 15 minutes.

Then never worry about timers and programs and power outages again. No worries about DLST, and dusk and dawn times shifting throughout the year. I have used them forever in my outside garage light fixture. I buy ones made by Philips. They last for many years.

The water dispenser on my fridge recently stopped working; so I took the face off and discovered that a piece of plastic that held the button in one place so that the lever could whack it had broken off.

I attempted to duct tape it back, but it had too much give. So I gorilla-glued the button to where it was supposed to be, and for extra measure stuffed it around with packing foam I had lying around in the garage, to reduce the stress on the glue.

I have A/C but rarely need it. I've found the cheapest, most effective way to cool things down is a window fan. In the evening it's almost always going to be cooler outside. And, during the day as long as you place the fan on a window opposite the side of the house the sun is located on, it serves the purpose well.

I'm not a big fan (heh) of regular fans....and definitely not ceiling fans in the summer. Regular fans just dry your eyes out. Ceiling fans just push the rising heat down to the living area. (Disclaimer: IMO).

52 I have two Schumacher battery chargers. One is a special needs charger. The design hasn't changed in 80 years.

The other is a talented and gifted charger. Both work, and both perform about the same charging profile. The latter charger is much lighter in weight (no transformer) and has "digital" switches and controls. In temperatures below about 40 deg. F., it becomes inoperative insofar the microswitches do not work. The charger itself has to be brought in someplace warmer in order to turn on.

It will also hork during a brief power sag, say when a generator spools up when an air conditioner kicks on. Annoying.

The old school iron is a marvelous design, that is approximately perfect at doing what it is supposed to do. Armed with a voltmeter, and a thermometer, the end user can maintain a battery to almost a textbook charge level. The "smart" charger is an approximation, it will do OK, but there isn't really any comparison. Both have their uses, but if I could only choose one, I'd go with the 80 year old design.

No Internet connection. As few things as possible to go bad. I don’t need my coffeemaker to make coffee when I’m not home.

I would prefer electric, because I do plug it into a HomeKit outlet; this way I have coffee waiting for me in the kitchen in the morning. And when I make tea in the evening I can turn it off without leaving the book I’m reading and then go get it a few minutes later when it’s cool enough to drink.

But the coffeemaker doesn’t need to know this.

We have a 9 cup. Solid. Been using it for decades. Nothing brings out the flavor live stove top brewed over a low/med flame.

Of course, the coffee grounds have to be high quality, too.

Been to Italy twice. Drank lots of excellent coffee there. Ours is better. This is our 4PM standard.

Also a Sears 12v, 10 amp with a 50 amp surge/start switch. The surge start is to be used for only short duration.
It's not commercial grade but it's been helpful.

I have a Keurig. I wake up, go into the kitchen, turn it on and let Puff and Ruth out. By the time they come back in, the thing has heated up. While Dot and Dutchess are out, I make my coffee. When they're ready to come in, it's done. No weighing, grinding or filtering.

68 The chief complaint of the old school chargers is "they aren't regulated". Well this is true. But battery charge voltage is entirely temperature dependent. What works, or is acceptable at 80 deg. is completely useless at 0 deg., the engineers who designed the good ole Schumacher knew what they were doing. If you bounce the end-point voltages against a temperature compensated battery charge table, you'll have an "aha!" moment. They "sized" the transformer to meet the average automotive starting battery of approximately 70 to 100 amp hours.

It is possible to boil a battery out if you forget about it, but it takes a while, and it won't be a factor in subzero temperatures. There is nothing to wear out, and has one moving part. And no micro-switches or goofy digital shit that horks out when it gets cold.

Simply putting a BIOS battery into all devices incorporating a timer would solve that problem, for ten years or so, until the BIOS battery died. But they can be made replaceable.

The stove clock in my house is the super-twitchy 'breathe on it wrong and it resets'. The microwave across the aisle is far more robust. But at least neither has a program to rebuild, just the clock setting.

I try not lament. Not always successful, obviously. But I try.

What I do is be as courteous as I can and go from there. Not because I'm a good person, the evidence is in on that one. But because it's all I can control and it makes me feel better.

Hold the door for the next person. Offer to help people when they need it instead of just walking by. Being nice to store clerks, making eye contact and saying thank you. Silly little things that I can control and it makes my day feel better and every now and then it seems to make someone else's better.

I might not be able to change the world but I can make the one I live in a bit better and it doesn't cost a thing.

There are multiple versions depending on what you want. The plain-jane is the Aluminum one, but I love my stainless.
They also make a stainless one that has a clear borosilicate carafe top so you can watch the coffee spew out.

If you buy one, make sure to get a couple of replacement gaskets because you will certainly forget it on the stove and cook the gasket, and that burnt gasket can make the coffee taste funny.

Everyone should have them as part of their emergency kit. They (all of them)will run for years and years perfectly fine on ordinary automotive gasoline.

Just don’t try to store them with car gas in the tank. For emergency or standby use, Coleman fuel in the tank will light up fine after 20 or 30 years storage, easy. In that sense it is sort of like propane. Car gasoline will have turned to goo and ruin the appliance.

It is possible to boil a battery out if you forget about it, but it takes a while, and it won't be a factor in subzero temperatures. There is nothing to wear out, and has one moving part. And no micro-switches or goofy digital shit that horks out when it gets cold.

A guy I used to work for went on to sell hearing aids to hearing aid clinics, and he was a fantastic salesman of the old school.
He said he spent a lot of time waiting in airports and he had game he played: he would smile at people to get them to smile back. His goal was 100% and he never got it. He said he would top out on his best day at about 70-80%
He said he figured most people in airports are having a crappy day, but if he could get a smile out of them he could get a smile out of a potential sale, and that was step one in getting in getting rapport going.
I have tried that, it is an interesting game to play. He said women have to be careful, since a smile and a second side-look can be interpreted as a come-on, but anyone can play.
It feels like I am brightening a couple of people's days.

Almost always yes and my reply "Good, I won't make it worse" gets a laugh.

And when they ask if I want a receipt, I'll respond with "Sure, that way you won't have to tackle me going out the door." Again, a little chuckle.

Wonderful - I had to connect it to the internet and put an app on my phone to change the time the light bulb stays lit after opening or closing. And the camera turns the light on if it detects a person, me, walking across the garage, in broad daylight. How helpful. It also takes a video every time I walk in front of the camera. Until I turned off notifications it set off a chime every time also.
Seriously, who comes up with this?
