Refresh and it pops up for a second then disappears. Yet can't comment until I get it back, it's not visible, swat it away then could comment. Finding the invisible ad was near impossible.

A tool used to rephrase plagiarised text changed "final solution" to "mass killing of an ethnic group" in a chemistry paper. Now retracted thanks to a PubPeer user who spotted this.

To judge protein-inferred oxidative damage, a soil test was administered. A phosphate safeguard answer was used to regulate the pH to 7.8, influencing the total response book to 30 mL. The backlash combination was able by joining 1.75 mL of Triton, 1.5 mL of methionine, and 1 mL of NBT.

Subsequently, 1 mL of the mass killing of an ethnic group was opposed to 20 mL of the skin sample and unprotected to light for 7 min.

The whole paper is ridiculous. Nothing to do with translation software which would not make this mistake. This is one of a category of papers cynically manipulated to beat plagiarism detection tools. Just search "tortured phrases" for more information or read the PubPeer link.

25 The real damage done to New Mexican children is done by the State of New Mexico itself with the prime example being the incredibly dysfunctional public school system here that has ranked worst in the country for decades. Close behind was the Communist, nominally Democrat, governor shutting down the schools for over a year during covid and forcing kids to spend their School days unsupervised in front of computer screens where they got an even worse "public school education."

This whole Meta lawsuit has exactly nothing to do with protecting children and everything to do with bagging a scalp so the extreme left-wing state government political hacks can go to useless conferences can brag, collect an awards, and get hammered on martinis. In a matter of couple years this settlement money will have disappeared into being allocated for salaries and pensions for the government peeps and the kids will be right back to doing what they're doing today.

This is my nightmare some nights, and I end up participating in the ONT around 2 to 3 am when that happens.

This is what my pharmacist recommended to help stop the leg cramps: Magnesium Oxide pills (the ones I buy are 420mg.) They're cheap, and they work.

One a day, except in the summer when I'm drinking a lot more water, then I take two, one at dinner time and one just before bed. Other times of the year, I just take the one at dinner time.

67 We watched a lesser-known Bogart movie last night, Knock on Any Door. He plays an attorney who goes to bat for a juvenile delinquent accused of murder, played by John Derek. Actually Derek's character graduated from juvenile delinquent status a while ago; his record includes shoplifting, auto theft, and robbery/burglary. Well, this time his luck has really run out and he's charged with shooting a cop during a robbery.

The story of the trial is intercut with flashbacks of Derek's life growing up, his marriage to a good girl, his fruitless attempts to go straight, and her suicide when he goes back to crime. Affecting stuff, if loaded with the 1949 version of "Isn't society really to blame for this?" Bogart turns in his usual fine performance, and Derek is darned good too.

Every gun, mine, and guard tower on the Berlin Wall was pointed at East Germans.

In 1957, the communist regime in East Germany made unauthorized emigration treason after an estimated 2.5 million people voted with their feet, fleeing the communist East towards the West.

So in 1961, the authorities closed the border, called the wall “the Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart”, and gave border guards shoot to kill orders.

People only ever risked their lives escaping in one direction.

91 The mystery classic from 1974, The Last of Sheila, is on Movies! tonight at 7 Central. Ace, I think, commented on it some years ago. It remains the most Ellery Queen-like film ever made, in its focus on the puzzle for its own sake, the sheer ingenuity of that puzzle, the thunderbolt ending, and a false solution before the true one.

Written by Stephen Sondheim (yes, that guy) and actor Anthony Perkins. Apparently their circle used to host puzzle mystery parties, and SS and AP were inspired to write this. You get not only the dazzle I mentioned above, but an all-star cast (as they do with the endless Agatha Christie adaptations): Richard Benjamin, Joan Hackett, James Mason, James Coburn, Raquel Welch, and Dyan Cannon. Brilliant job.

Full disclosure, it's a frozen Banquet one. But I sprinkle some shredded cheese on it or in it for extra flavor.

Aldi sells its own, Bremer brand, about the same size and price. Neither can approach the Marie Callender versions, which are 2.5x the price but larger and with a bottom crust that can be devoured as well as the rest of the pie.

106 The Last of Sheila was part of a wave of murder mystery movies around 1974. Wasn't that the year of Murder on the Orient Express with Albert Finney as Poirot? And while Sheila is set in the modern day, it was part of a trend of movies set in the '30s like Bonnie and Clyde and Chinatown, and The Grissom Gang (though that was 1920s, I think). There was even a short-lived TV series with Robert Forster as private eye Banyon set in '30s LA.

The trend was brief. About '74 we got Happy Days, and suddenly all the nostalgia became about the Nifty Fifties.

These Banquet/Bremer ones can be done up in the oven, but I microwave them. Five minutes in the MW and then three more sitting in there according to the instructions.

There's a Costco here -- in fact it used to be right on my route to work. But I've never been inside and have little interest in gigantic portions of everything. The cheaper gas I guess might be enough to pay for the membership.

Years ago my employer the private university had an agreement with Sam's Club; employees got a free membership. I shopped there, but the bricks of cheese were as big as a gold bar and I could never finish them before they developed mold.

The ancient Egyptians were really big on the heliacal rising of Sirius, as that heralded the flooding of the Nile.

The ancient Greek homos and then the Romans believed that Sirius added its heat to the Sun at this heliacal rising, which is what made summer so hot then. Sirius is the Dog Star, hence Dog Days.

Not to be confused with "helical", "heliacal" means related to or with the sun.

146 Cybersecurity company VulnCheck said on Aug. 5 that it has found that more than 20 models of a Chinese-made wireless router sold worldwide contain a hidden backdoor that could allow unauthorized access to devices connected to the network.

The finding adds to growing Western concerns about cybersecurity risks posed by Chinese-made networking equipment. Western governments have warned for years about hackers exploiting such devices, and U.S. regulators moved this year to restrict imports of foreign-made routers.

Jacob Baines, chief technology officer at VulnCheck, who found the backdoor, said in a blog post that the vulnerability, dubbed “Endlessdoors,” affects routers manufactured by Shenzhen Zhibotong Electronics Co. and sold under the Zbtlink and Wiflyer brand names.
