69 Kids got into the drive-in free, plus you could bring in your own food and drinks and they didn't really give a shit.

We went there a lot. Big family.

Only rich people had AC back then, so it was a nice way to get of the house on a hot summer night

This was before the fam moved to Alaska. There were a few attempts at drive-ins here, but it was too light at night in the summer and too cold in the winter. At least one had space heaters on the poles next to the speakers that you could bring into your car.

89 Reminds me of the Penny Arcade near the bus stop on Royal St in New Orleans - it was next to the Corsair tie shop. That was in the '70s, tho' - it's prolly all gone now. The only room y' never wanted to go in at the Penny Arcade was the one in the far end of the place in the left rear of the store. It had a long curtain that guys would pull back to enter - and if you stood next to it long enough checking out the other things, you'd hear 'Unnnnnhhhh!' and 'Mmmm!' and 'Oooohhhhh …'. din't need to be a rocket scientist to know what that meant …

91 Don't care for the style with its exaggerated poses and physiques. It works for some WPA era government building murals but it gets tiresome fast. Also, crowded cityscapes and urban-oriented scenes have little appeal for me.

I'm not knocking Marsh's talent but his choices and approach. There seems little positive about the paintings. Norman Rockwell can do a similar scene, crowded city life, but it's warm. Marsh's come across to me as smarmy.

170 Twenty Cent Movie
Reginald Marsh

Nice article, Whitney Museum of American Art, Reginald Marsh, Recto: Twenty Cent Movie, Verso: (Study for figures) 1936

They - theaters such as the Lyric - held some great, old traditions that extended some decades past the 1930's. (There were long term relationships came from those movie meetups that, after mid-century, often featured some of the worst horror movies, too, and then the audiences added commentary on top of that. (A really bad movie, you could laughing through the entire show.) Now, Runway and streaming.

Aside: Didn't we have another painting, different artist, that had the Lyric Theater of NYC in its background?

I may not hang today's art selection but I've enjoyed seeing & reading about it. Thanks.

The drug was very good at reducing inflammation, but there was no improvement at all in mortality from atherosclerosis. Did Big Pharma rush to the NY Times to push out a slop article on the wonders of anti-inflammatories?

The end stage for AI companies is to be able to monetize the product that their AI produces, so watermarking is merely the first step in the process.

I learned long ago due to the workload of churning out publish or perish that you basically had to act like a potter. You throw a glop on the wheel with some idea about what to write and then spend the rest of the time shaping the glop into something useful. Otherwise, you can get writer's block. I grew up in the age of typewriters where it was a literal pita to correct and you were painfully worried about a typo, not only because of the pita it was to correct, but writing was viewed more as thou shalt not....."

Nowadays, I just put it down--redraft as needed--usually the second or third draft. And I don't sweat the clunky writing style nor grammar mistakes on the first draft anymore.

For formal submissions, you clean it up, otherwise, I simply don't worry about it anymore. In a lot of cases, on computer drafting, I am often rewrite to clarify as I go here which means sometimes verb tense, plural mentions, punctuation, etc. go by the wayside. Because it is as much to clarify in my head my own arguments by writing them down as it is for others. And sometimes what I put out mystifies even me.

How is anyone surprised? This is what Democrats always do. They vote party first. It’s only Republicans who hold their nose up high about “principles” and vote Democrat.

People who thought Democrats in Michigan would sit the election out or even vote for Rogers are in for a big suspense.

What's hilarious is the left twisting themselves in circles trying to tell everyone why MAGA supports men in women's sports. While not realizing the reason they are doing it is to draw attention to men in women's sports.

208 Good Housekeeping - recall announcement

USDA recalled 12,036 pounds of Canadian bacon that entered U.S. stores without required federal inspection, affecting Royale Natural and TOP VALU products in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

The bacon bypassed mandatory import reinspection, prompting the USDA’s most serious recall classification, though no pathogens were found and no illnesses were reported.

Packages with September 2026 sell-by dates bearing “EST. 1” should be thrown away or returned. Consumers with questions can call the USDA hotline at 888-674-6854

That's why I am not sorry to be kicked off Twitter. It's a PITA sometimes. But it was always a race to the bottom to see who's better at the look at me game, and people would gleefully take asinine positions, blatantly steal content, and pass others' "hot takes" without attribution.

It would be interesting to know how the shipment "bypassed" USDA inspection. Was it a lapse by the inspectors responsible, a fuckup by the driver of the truck (sounds like one truckload), or a concerted effort to evade inspection?

Lots of those podcast movie "reaction" videos, cut/pasted short clips together with some dot Indian guy at the end doing a short 20 second outtro while holding a tiny little microphone up to his mouth. That's relatively honest.

On the other hand, you have AI thieves who take the whole video, change the voice and then cut/paste some random guy into the vid duplicating the content, word for word. Happens a lot in guitar instruction vids (Rhett Shull was recently bitching about the latest one, where they didn't bother to even change the background from his basement studio, while also stealing his content)

I haven't seen those, I've just seen literal copy-pastes, frequently onto platforms the creator isn't using (TikTok, Facebook, Instagram).

Actually, it should all be thrown out for mislabeling Canuckian ham as "bacon". There's nothing "bacon" about that stuff. I mean, it's reasonably tasty ham, but Canadian Bacon tries to fool you with the name. The only thing they have in common is that they come from the same animal.

I like 40's music like that. Unfortunately the big band went away due to post war economics--it made bands smaller because they could no longer make money sufficient for bigger ones.

Pitch correction has nothing to do with AI. It's actually derived from math the oil companies came up with to find good places for fracking.
