Elling William Gollings

Who becomes famous and who toils in obscurity -- and why -- is the question that most artists must ask themselves.

I had never heard of William Gollings until I had the opportunity to visit a lovely museum in Big Horn Wyoming (near Sheridan) called The Brinton Museum. And by "lovely," I don't mean just the collection. It is architecturally beautiful, and the setting is difficult to beat, with the Big Horn Mountains in the near distance.

There are several Western artists who are far more famous: Russell and Remington and Bierstadt come to mind, but even relatively obscure artists such as Gollings have gems scattered in their work that are rarely seen, and wonderful when discovered!

There are all different sizes. Now that I spend more time around horses I see a lot of the small painted ones that the kids ride and I look pretty huge on top of those horses. And you see them walking by a draft horse and they look like doggies.

78 Checked out the Brinton Museum website. It is indeed a beautiful setting. Love how the architecture of the museum does not intrude on the setting. BTW, there's a William Gollings exhibition scheduled there from mid August til the end of December.

82 The cowboy and his horse are distinct, everything else just frames them and establishes the milieu. What stands out for me is the pose of the rider on his horse. It could be a sculpture for the old laconic cowboy. Remington could have done it.

I don't know the process but the painting seems to lend itself to printing as a book illustration.

Anybody else think of Sam Eliot when looking at the cowboy?

Wildlife art was very popular in the time before photography became commonplace. It was the only way for most people to ever ‘see’ certain animals.

Also, some of the most famous and influential artists of the American west and Rockies at the time were … foreigners. That was when we got the cream of the foreign crop. Not the fecal ooze at the bottom of the septic tank.

126 Cattle were much too valuable for feeding cowboys on the trail on a cattle drive, Cookie would follow along with the Chuckwagon and serve lots of biscuits and beans for Mr. Taggart. Cowboys tended to be pretty lean fellers, Hollywood has skewed perceptions quite a lot, of course. Out west things rust but slowly, the old line camps, their garbage dumps show they must have lived on Coffee and tobacco and not much else.

Cowboys on ranches and cattle drives probably didn’t have six shooters. Most period accounts say they had rifles or shotguns available. For one thing a Colt was fairly expensive, cowboys weren’t paid much.

Comments are bot driven garbage and I am including human bots from abroad in troll mills. Likes are simply social virtue signalling.

And whatever tweaking of the algorithm, the fake bot community will adjust to try to sway public opinion in their favor.

Sharps were kings of long distance shots but Remingtons were the bread and butter and that is why Sharps went bankrupt and Remington stayed in business plus Remington did the razor and razorblade solution making bank from ammunition for its firearms. Winchester though was probably the most sold for long arms with its 1873 lever action and derivative models for it. Colt with its Single Action Army and later the Colt Lightning double action were the most popular handguns. Remington and Sharps were bit players compared to Winchester and Colt.

What matters for voting is local perceptions of the economy.

If you live in a town with one industry, and that industry gets decimated while the rest of the country is thriving, you think the economy in general is terrible. (This explains why DC's perception is usually at odds with the rest of the nation, especially right now.)

The GDP numbers are things that get used to try to feed overall narratives and prompting for soft-partisans to either engage or disengage, depending on who is doing the telling.

1890's to 1930's, it was common for people to have handguns--pocket pistols, bicycle guns, and so forth. Historically, crime was not as horrible due to the widespread application of the death penalty removing the worst of scoundrels but it was unsettled times due in part, to immigration and industrialization, so people wanted to be safe.

You also see discrete pistols being marketed to women for carry at the turn of the century.

Before penicillin and sulfa, being gut shot even with a puny cartridge like a 25 ACP or a 32 ACP/32 S&W Short or Long, would often cause sepsis and death.

They always downloaded as Single Action Army were not drop safe. So 5 with one empty chamber which the firearm was carried with. Drop Safe did not become a thing until the 1890s with hammer blocks and transfer bars being introduced for revolvers, took a bit longer for semi autos to have drop safety mechanisms added to them.

Of course if you could afford the latest and greatest modern cartridge firearms they were the way to go. But shipping costs (railroad) were very high and if you lived in Nevada or Utah or far off the path ammo was expensive. Being able to use black powder in myriad guns, melt down lead and cast bullets over a campfire had a certain utility. Save the good stuff for more critical social work in any case.

I did a paper once upon a time using REIS local economic data and a governor's reelection bid--turns out that state economic figures did not matter, national did but the strongest effect was local economy. Regular folks perceive their economy by looking out the window, elites often being okay at home, focus more on the national figures (probably due to investments, markets, etc. exposure). Few care about overall state figures.

Problem with using it for predictions is local figures are slower than national to be released.

Expensive and at times unavailable ammunition. Same for the 38-40 and 44-40. Even the mighty 45 Colt at times literally dries up. These are handloading cartridges if you want to shoot them and handloading is a pita because of the thin and elongated necks on these cartridges. Can crumple in the reloading process.

There is also the problem that the 32-20 came in two different loads--one hotter one for lever action rifles, the weaker one for revolvers.

They just pour their own ideas and opinions into kids heads as facts they must obey. And they do. And many of them go through life believing whatever bullshit the voice of authority tells them to believe.

Much of education's deterioration is that a) you have different careers for women that want to work outside of the home---used to be only being a nurse or a teacher were suitable employment for women so those attracted the best and brightest.

And then you now have the miserable colleges of education who rival only journalism/communications for their students having the lowest academic performance at universities. Incompetent teachers, no discipline due to fears of racial unrest and lawsuits, and a population that values education as a credential, not as a means of self improvement.

The driver starts to go, but he sticks around.

It was his father's car. His father came to the scene about half an hour later when word got to him. Nice white BMW. He was pissed.

I think the kid got kicked out of The Citadel.

I was friendly with this dude when I was 20 and he turned out to be a super lib, even started an anti war blog etc and was like taking to Stephen Colbert before there was such a thing. At the time it wasn't a big deal to be friends with leftards but you slowly realized they didn't want to be friends with you - even if you weren't explicitly right. Just not being a leftard annoyed them a lot.

My point is one day he came to me with a link to a web 1.0 forum he'd been reading where everyone there wanted to be a vampire.

We joked about a lot of stuff so I thought it was a joke but the place was truly bugfuck insane. Won't even go into it, it's exactly what you think and probably worse. And I don't think he was kidding.

Looks like my area in 2020, but the black trucks that hassled the unpermitted, street blocking protestors were the ones the politicians and police were especially interested in.

In fact, the protestors were allowed to have a redo weeks later, and the black trucks and local residents closely watched (including drones) to see if one unpleasant, possibly "stress-inducing" word was directed towards the protestors.

Good question. When the police sell the truck, I'd imagine the lien gets satisfied either from auction proceeds or the kid, so I'd guess the kid had to pray it sold for more than the loan payoff value.
