Pixy why do we get a popup after every comment that blurs the page then that has to be swatted away so one can comment again?

5 I've discovered tabletop games.

I'm debating spending way too much money on a multi-toolhead printer so I can print a quarter billion pieces of terrain for games I still don't have time to play, but at least I can feel like I'm making progress in while enough trees to reforest the Sahara print out while I'm dealing with either Day Job(tm) or insomnia.

Cheaper than a new 3D card, though.

6 On the fifth of August of this year, SpaceX will blow up the Moon. (Yahoo)

On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh.

The last trajectory update pushed the projected impact site beyond the limb by a little bit, so it wasn't visible from earth, but the ejecta plume might have been.

None of the amateurs trying to look for it, even those with some large 'scopes, saw anything. The pros, including NASA were going to be looking with the big stuff, but they haven't said anything, and won't for a few days until they process all the data.

Some orbiters will image the site when they get the chance and we'll have images when we get them.

9 And don't think its the sit's fault, at school I am working at has public Wi-Fi and once on our page its fine to refresh, but get a unsafe warning to a new page. Can if I go outside and get page on mobile data can go in and have site working.
Doesn't do it on a few other of my usual places.

10 Which is more important: having someone recording when a piece of space junk smacks into the moon? Or having someone recording when a soyjack commie gets beach blanket bingo'd in broad daylight for picking a fight with one of the natives?

11 This pop up hell started for just about everyone a couple days ago - apparently worse on cell phones. It’s going to really cut down site traffic if it isn’t fixed.

I don't see anything about it @elonmusk

Is the NASA website where we should check back?

Posted by: m at August 05, 2026 04:50 AM (odBC9)

13 Browser settings -> Site Settings -> Javascript -> Don't Allow Sites to Use Javascript

You can fix it yourself in a few seconds. It will hurt them in lost ad revenue, but so would simply not visiting at all anymore.

Just hit the tip jar if you feel guilty about.

What's with all the pop-up ads? Before I added Adblock Plus to my iPad and iPhone they were driving me crazy.

22 >I've discovered tabletop games.

Fantasy, SF, or historical? This is kind of my jam. Feel free to ask questions.

Allow me to recommend Age of Hannibal, a little indie game that has a brilliant terrain generation system. You have a deck of cards with terrain features on them. You split the deck between the two players. If you have more/better scout units in your force, you get more cards than your opponent.

You then take turns laying the cards face down into zones on the table, each card adjacent to either your table edge or another of your cards. Flip them over, and place the appropriate terrain pieces in the zones.

The practical effect is that the better your force's scouts, the more you can pick a field of battle advantageous to your force - represented by actually creating that field of battle with your cards.

Having it sung by a used Falcon 9 upper stage from a commercial mission expected to impact the Moon on Wednesday, Aug. 5 would be better.

It is surprisingly well written. It's easy to become jaded in a world where every news article or press release is written by a halfwit AI or some gender studies ninth year freshman intern who still hasn't figured out how adverbs work.

29 If you are operating on a computer where you can't turn off JavaScript entirely but can block specific sites, you need to block it on both "ace mu nu" and "acecomments mu nu". At least that worked to block the pop ups for me. (for now )

30 It's almost become more difficult to find good, entertaining sources for cutting edge science info, mostly thanks to the enslopification of everything. Just tell me what's going on, you know? I don't need you to patronize me like I'm smarter than everyone i know because i watched a YouTube video, and i also don't need you acting like you're smarter than me because... you made a YouTube video. Just tell me about A Thing so i can watch it and think "well that's neat".

The annoying resonance between "private equity" channels and The Algorithm.... all these channels like Veritasium, Astrum, that one insufferable bald neckbeard who apparently has about eight thousand channels...

It ought to be a nice, convenient little mechanism for some really good content, but instead it's just not worth the effort most of the time.

Maybe I'm just bitter because no one had the foresight to clone twenty copies of James Burke for future generations.

34 >>>SpongMonkeys hardest hit.

genius.com

The Spongmonkeys are an Internet phenomenon, created by Joel Veitch, that crossed over into television in the form of Quiznos commercials.

They appear to be a pair of graphically edited tarsiers with human mouths, and appear on the web at the rathergood.com website.

These creatures float in the air in front of a hydrangea bush while singing a song called “We Like The Moon”. One of the Spongmonkeys plays a guitar, while the other sings.

The name “spongmonkeys” originated on the B3ta website, where “spong” is a slang term for adding oversized eyes to an image.

In early 2004 the Spongmonkeys began appearing in television advertisements for Quiznos singing an altered version of their song called “We Love the Subs.”

One commercial featured the oft-imitated line “they got a pepper bar,” referring to the self-serve assortments of peppers that are a Quizno’s selling point.
