Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Scroll down in the thread for more exacting information about color sensitivities in various species. But this gives you an idea why hunters often wear orange.

Lurkers and their dogs

Hi K.T,

Very long time lurker from Australia here.
Here are my two Frenchies, Peggy and her little brother Louis. Louis is the guy with the beer and he, sadly, really is a moron. They love cuddling up together when it's cold down here in Australia.

Peggy and Louis are wonderful.

* * *

no class envy.jpg

These two are ying and yang.  Tory, the white one is a pure breed husky.  Chill and calm.  Moon, the black one is a 4 time returned to a shelter adoption because he's kind of a lot to handle.  Loves to eat drywall.  Best buddies and no class envy here.

TheAlabamaGang

Wow. Great to hear about buddies with different personalities getting along so well with each other. About the drywall eating: could there be an iron deficiency?

Here are some recent RtC pics in case folks are starving for images. I know his fans are this close to being infected with rabies. So I do my part.

1. Here he is looking imperial.
2. Here he is looking tired of all this.
3. Here is where I discovered that, behind my back, he decided to go into business as a contractor. I've blurred the phone number in case some naughty types wanted to do mischief.
4. Here he is Giving the Look.

Thank you for the weekend threads!

BeckoningChasm

A cat of many moods . . .

And going into business, too!

4 Afternoon, Pet Folken,

I love the black cat. What's his full name? And perhaps I am a dichromat, but I don't see his image anywhere on the pic with the contractor truck. The "CAT-erpillar" on the truck body, maybe? Or his nickname being RtC? Okay, I get it.

5 Yay! Pet Thread!

Chloe the Bengal Kitty is still adjusting. As is Kaylee the Calico Kitty Cat (the cutest little cat of them all).

Chloe is a bit of a klutz. Not very coordinated for a kitty cat.

Still adorable, though. I love her tail, which reminds me of a lemur's tail.

7 Tory and Moon are impressive.

We went to a dog show at a local convention center this morning. French bulldogs were there, at least one Siberian husky, and a Kuvasz (an ancient Hungarian animal-guard dog breed, something like a golden retriever but taller and all white).

Plus they had 30-some-odd Shelties/miniature collies. All colors, from sable (like Lassie) to merle (gray and white) and jet, or mostly black. They are beautiful animals. If I thought I could live with and train a dog, that would be my choice. There were also a couple of Schipperkes -- such alert-looking dogs, like miniature black wolves! -- and others we didn't know.

My other observation is that the dog show people, at least the judges and the ones who get in the rings to show off what their dogs look like and how they perform, tend to be younger and in better shape -- and universally better dressed! -- than cat show people or the outside population at large. That alone was refreshing and worth the trip.

Much like my Stirling, once known as the Evil Black Kitten of War and Pestilence . . . only because he was annoyingly and devastatingly playful, not because he was mean.

12 Little Dagny Sophia, La Siberienne, has suddenly taken to sleeping on the bed with me in the afternoons along with Stirling. She's done it off and on in her time with me -- next month will be four years -- but at random times. Mostly when the weather is chilly, which it is far from being now.

Unpredictable, these cats.

24 Pet Thread! *skritches all around*

The nose knows #1

Alas, the barn cat Buttercup was found dead under some heavy equipment in the barn, too hard to get to, so that will be his resting place. Found after a week of smelling death out there. Buttercup was a good old yeller cat, the only one of the ferals that would actually come up to us and let us pet him. Very sad.

The nose knows #2

I kept telling MiladyJo that something smelled foul in the pantry. Since everything seemed to be sealed in cans, bins, or bags, we couldn't figure it out. Then Milady unpacked the case of cat food we'd bought from Amazon and found that one can was open, and bug-infested. Yuck. Pantry smells okay now.

Pets, including ferals, are a trial in the best of times. Wouldn't want to be without them.

Penny is a black cat, but if you look at her at just the right angle in just the right light, you can see very slight tabby coloration in her coat with stripes of darker black on her black fur. (Actually, under the right light she also looks like she has very dark *chocolate brown* fur.)

27 The smooth gray shorthair I've been called "Alfred" (Alfred the Gray, ha ha) visited one morning this week. I have a feeling he has a nominal home somewhere in the complex, with people who let him out to run around. He has no fear of people, knows Linda and me and his feeding station (my front step), and apparently is at home with his lifestyle. I worry that a car will get him, or one of the feral hominid spawn who dwell here will do something unpleasant to him. Or a coyote might snap him up -- though I have never seen a coyote inside the complex, just at night, rarely, on the quiet suburban avenue that runs north of us.

I keep suggesting Linda take him in, but no dice so far.

Dagny and Stirling rarely sleep touching each other. I've seen her groom his head with her tongue now and then, and the reverse, but they don't have the buddy closeness Wolf and Chekov did. 45 I was a bad cat owner this morning. My roly-poly Scout couldn't be pleased. She's a cuddler, but it has to be on her terms. She kept trying to lead me around the house, and I kept following but nothing satisfied her.

46 I am between pets now. We had a brindle pit bitch that I adopted. She was the sweetest thing. Very protective of the family.

We took in a neighbor's kitten 15 years ago. "Mittens" wanted to live the indoor-outdoor life. Neighbor bought the wrong cat to sit inside all day and all night. Wifey renamed her Buffy.

Both Wifey and Buffy are deceased.

I will get a dog, maybe from the shelter. But not until my traveling days are over. For the time being, I am free to move about the country (or the world for that matter).

51 There were several standard poodles in the dog show today. A gray one who had been clipped into that "tufts on the legs and tail" style, and a couple of black ones who had not been clipped like that and just looked as if they had thick curly Sicilian hair.

Years ago a co-worker of mine said that the standard poodle was supposed to be one of the smartest breeds of them all. (No, she did not have a poodle.)

I noticed too that the old saw about "People come to resemble their dogs" was frequently true. The male bulldog owners looked much like their animals, and the most attractive ladies were all pretty much in the group showing the miniature collies.

Once in a while I'll see that Stirling is pawing at the lower edge of the pantry door. I open it, and Dagny bounces out. (They both love to go into closets and don't seem to mind being shut in there by accident.)
