Good morning, Katy!
Last summer I tore out all of the coneflowers and roses from our front garden bed, and replaced them with 40 different varieties of daylillies, about 50 plants in all.
The new bed is simply beautiful! Daylily flowers each last only for 24 hours, but each plant sports multiple stems with multiple flowers on each stem. The result is a riot of colors, with a different set of flowers blooming every morning. Something nice to get me out of bed in the morning!
Just BTW that daylily bed is 7 feet by 22 feet.

I love these! There are more if we can get them formatted to present to The Horde! The one at the top is an unknown variety, and the bottom one is 'Autumn Red'.

Hoping for more photos! What a lot of work, though.

Looks great! The quality of those tomatoes makes a difference, and go with the corn!

As a 100% pureblooded cracker, let me offer everyone a friendly, culturally-appropriated "aloha" now that I'm fully moved and integrated on these conquered isles.
I have curated a veritable smorgasbord of photos highlighting both notable flora and fauna I have encountered thus far. Of particular note are the trees...not the ubiquitous palm trees most associate with these tropical climes, but instead a curious and impressive type that spreads a wide canopy, with very few lower branches, which reminds me more of something from an African savanna documentary. They come with a variety of different colored flowers, which I presume delineate different species.

Impressive! Which are your favorites? We may get more later.

9 From Boise area: Still hot, but at least not 109 - more like 98. The Oregon smoke was very bad last Sun., and is still present but at least there's a bit less of it.

We power-washed the garage end of the house, so Husband can repaint. Our other project is re-doing the minor landscaping behind the house. Husband dug his drainage trench behind the kitchen. It will need a tube made of landscaping cloth, filled with clean slate rocks, placed deep in the trench. To this end, we are... washing rocks. He built a frame with hardware cloth, onto which we put rocks, we spray them, then save the clean rocks (because you don't want dirt in the drain rocks) until we build the full trench system. Once we get this all built, we can start redoing the edging of the slate rock area along the back of the house - the current edging's all cracked.

Harvesting green beans, occasional tomatoes, occasional strawberries, too many zucchini. I froze some green beans and broccolini. Now watching the cantaloupes, as some are looking like they'll be ready within 2 weeks.

10 I learned a little about the beautiful daylily last fall when i happened to be at the home of a master gardener who had just hosted a national daylily tour of her home garden She told me the fun and challenge of growing the different varieties The hobby seems addictive!

11 Actually the washed landscaping rocks will be going back in place as part of the landscaping, minus the soil that lets the weeds grow. The French drain will be filled with... drain rock!

12 My crepe myrtle bush, which I cut back because I thought it might be dead, busted out and threw off blooms too heavy at the top. Now it has a sad looking flop.

13 Husband tells me I got this wrong - you don't use sharp-edged slate rocks inside a drain like this, because it will poke holes in the cloth. He'll be buying drain rock to put in the drain tube. We're washing the rocks because if we just move them, with the dirt that's already on them, when we put them elsewhere in the blue slate rock areas, they'll grow weeds in that dirt. My fault for not understanding all the specifics of the plan.

14 If you can swing it, a great roadtrip byway is called the Schaefer Trail in Utah, technically part of Canyonlands NP. It's a well graded road, unpaved. Cars and high clearance no problem. But it was built merely as a work road, carved out of the vertical side of a mesa to take uranium ore somewhere to be processed. The exposure is pretty gnarly.

The best way to do it would be don't tell your spouse (sitting in the passenger seat, where the view is enough to induce a cardiac event) what road you're on. It would be worth it, I'm sure.

This is what I miss most about Hawai'i.

Growing up there as a kid, the trees there were the perfect jungle gym.

16 So, ummmm, I put a sprinking of coffeed grounds around my roses this year. They look more hardy and healthy than they have in years.

Bonus: less weeding.

I didn't know this was a thing. I forget where I read the advice (maybe here)...so thanks...whomever.

24 Gardening question: my habanero and poblano pepper plants look great but they still haven't flowered. Are they temperature sensitive? Like, are they waiting for the heat wave to pass before they flower and fruit?

Just took a walk and there is a house along my way that has the most spectacular shade garde, Took some photos I will send for next week. The Crepe Myrtle's are all in blossom here and they are just stunning. Huge difference from when I lived in New England. You just never see giant flowering trees like here

Makes for good walking weather. Had a couple of breezy days here but then back into the heat. It's going to rain but be in the 90's. Only good part is that the pool I use is pretty quiet. Just the people who actually swim show up.😉
