Daily Tech News 31 July 2026

Top Story

  • Renesas (a Japanese company formed by the merger of the semiconductor operations of Hitachi and Mitsubishi) has announced multiplexers for third-generation MRDIMMs. (WCCFTech)

You'd be entirely justified in asking Wut? at this point, but this is a great technology landing at precisely the wrong time.

MRDIMMs are registered memory taken to the next level. Since the memory modules have interface chips - the registers - on them, you can have multiple banks of memory on each module, allowing 256GB DIMMs instead of just 64GB.

What the M part stands for is multiplexed, meaning that when you access the memory it interleaves data from two banks at once, so that transfers are twice as fast.

The new multiplexers run at 16GHz.

Which means you get user upgradable high-capacity memory modules that run at the sort of speed normally associated with the memory on video cards.

Which would be amazing and allow for some seriously powerful integrated graphics except that memory is so expensive right now that there is absolutely no point to it.

Tech News

  • LLMs are broken and can't ever be fixed. (GitHub)

We've touched on this before. Computers have separate areas in memory reserved for instructions and data respectively, with strict controls over which is which. When those controls break down, you get a common class of security vulnerabilities - buffer overflows and the like.

LLMs don't have that. Worse, they pass benchmarks running tests for that problem with flying colours - typically blocking 100% of attacks - but when faced with a real human attacker they fail 100% of the time.

  • What we know of Nvidia's 5000 Super series. (WCCFTech)

Supposedly they are already in production but have been hidden away because nobody knows how to price them.

  • Also, I bought an RX 6400 today. The least powerful recent AMD graphics card and by a good margin, but also the least power hungry, and physically the smallest. It's not much slower than the RX 580 (I have a couple of those) but is a tiny low profile card that only uses 50W of power.

Also a lot cheaper and smaller than, say, an RTX 3050, while not being that much slower. Not something you'd buy unless you need to fit the card in a low-profile slot, but the Hyte / Hololive limited edition cases (of which I now have five) only allow for a single full-height card, so I do.

  • 2x, not 10x. (OBryant)

    Sounds about right.

Musical Interlude

Great song, even if the band hated it. I hate the video though. Sorry about that.

When I saw it for the first time I wondered, who do they think they are, the B-52s? And then it registered who the female vocalist is on this track.

The amusing part was shortly after that show, he actually ran into Michael Stipe and had a drink with him. He said "You're a cool guy but I really hate that song."

The only time he meows is when he gets put in the cage to go to vet or the first couple of days when I think he was calling out for his mother. He does have a loud purr, though.

129 On the subject of llms think about pilot induced oscllilations pios.

You design aircraft to be from aeroelastic instabilities. Meaning your flying around and you explode. ??? What? Yes, so as you fly, propel yourself along, you are feeding atmospheric fluctuations into the flexible airframe. Many frequencies that resonate and combine and possibly cause rapid divergent nonlinearity, ie explode. So why doesn't this happen all the time? Well it's frowned upon, and generally forbidden in all regulation. So you design it out of the system. And then add controls. Oh no... So now you design for an aeromechanical system wrapped in software. Very very difficult. But doable. And then you add a pilot. Oh no... A millions of years old evolutionary outcome that partied too hard last night. Lots of things happen. Some easy to predict like g forces pull their hands and control stick back. Some harder because the software is designed, goal seeks to help the pilot but the pilot adapts to the interface. Two complex moving changing system.

LLMs will change but also the users will change to adapt. Both will hallucinate. Interesting things will happen. Possibly not useful interesting.

134 @126/Common Tater: "My old hometown television news website causes my smartphone to go chernobyl, can feel the battery get hot right away. What are they doing?"

Running very inefficiently designed/coded software that is horsing your CPU to 100%. Could be third party adverts delivered by the site, or the site itself, and with "vibe coding" (AI, write me code that does...) being proven in some cases to write stuff that's absolutely miserable in terms of performance, we're going to be seeing a lot more of that.

To help eliminate the advertising/3rd party portion, try running the site in Brave and see if it does any better.

(You wouldn't believe how much third party crap sites I now see in no-script in Firefox on my desktop when I got to most sites. It's appalling.)
