Man discovers more than 200 Civil War-era cannonballs on his property

BOONEVILLE, Miss. - A Mississippi property owner uncovered more than 200 Civil War-era cannonballs while preparing land for commercial development, and historians believe even more artifacts may still be buried.
Harold Knight said he first found a single cannonball on his Booneville property before inviting people with metal detectors to search the site.
The search quickly turned up hundreds of Civil War munitions, including grape shot, canister shot and case shot, all estimated to be more than 160 years old.
Experts at the Booneville Rails & Trails Museum believe the ammunition is likely connected to either the Battle of Blackland or the Battle of Booneville, two Civil War battles fought in July 1862.

Those look like ten-inch 78 RPM discs. Childrens' music continued to be recorded on 78's long after LPs took over for serious music, and 45's for pop.

147 I went to an MA beach town today and walked down the beach. They wanted $$$ to park, $$$ to walk on the beach but I remembered there was a more obscure public beach in the town so I walked there instead.

I passed a bunch of mansion that cost x10 my house with exclusive beach access, of course with the requisite demanding the rich be taxed, America be opened to the needy, and no aristocrats. And most of the mansions had really serious fences around them.

When I got to the beach it was beautiful.

206 I had mentioned that I finished my Film Vault/Plex replacement and that one of the features was stat where you could see how many films by genre or decade, and that I only had 4 films from the 30s.

Well I have begun to correct that.

The other really nice feature is the search capability in that you can search for by films, cast, director, etc. and you can easily see where your gaps are.

That post about Don Pettit's star tracker got me off in the weeds of ISS attitude control. And I'm impressed at how clever the NASA engineers are with all that. The standard attitude of the ISS is dubbed LVLH, local vertical, local horizontal. This keeps the "bottom"(nadir) pointed at the earth at all times, while "up" is radial. They call that the z-axis. The x-axis, fore an aft points in the direction of orbital motion, and the y-axis is the other one, port and starboard.

So, the ISS is rotating once per orbit, sort of an artificial tidal lock, you can think of it. But there are real tidal forces, very small, and real drag on the station trying to torque. They deviate it every so slightly from that exact LVLH attitude so that drag torque just cancels the tide torque, saving fuel and reaction wheel momentum.

Okay, I got to looking up and reviewing the METAR sky condition and visibility crap. It's a complicated mess that doesn't mean what you might think it means, at least all the times.

The sky condition sensors they use usually only detect clouds up to maybe 12K'. Visibility is given in miles, and represents the distance you could see an object (under whatever standard definitions of seeing they use). 10 miles is the upper limit for aviation. If you can see 10 miles, that's as good as 20 miles, etc.

So, it's possible the upper atmosphere could be a mess, with poor seeing astronomically, and it would show up as CLR with 10 mile visibility.

256 I have not yet encountered a grocery store (or any store) with "self-check" lines that doesn't have at least one employee working that area - without which they wouldn't function for long, given the endless small glitches errors and difficulties involved in most check-outs.

So there's that employee, and the cost of the machines themselves - and, probably a higher loss rate then normal given the greater suitability of those areas, even when manned, for theft.

So now the store is supposed to go 8% below its cost (for a typical basket with representative items from the whole inventory, on which the overall margin is 2% or less) for things sold through self-check lines.

What's a store manager going to do? Guessing it will be something other than keeping everything as is and taking a hit on self-check items.

271 Mr. TiFW and I are at the DFW airport hotel this evening - we have a flight out tomorrow to the West Coast to visit DD#1 and her family for 10 days. Granny T has loaded up her suitcase with presents for the grandsons 😊💕

We figured out a while back that we can use the "Drive, Park, Fly" rate at the onsite hotel and save substantially on parking costs. Plus, we aren't rushed trying to get to the airport the day of our trip - we have a nice meal the night before, breakfast in the morning, catch the shuttle to the correct terminal, and we are actually kind of relaxed by the time we get on the plane! 🛩🛩🛩

307 One accidental gardening success this year: had rooted some clematis cuttings 2 years ago, but they looked dead this Spring. Put the pots out on the deck 'cuz they were in the way indoors. Ignored them for a couple of months.

They sent up new growth! Yay! So I potted them up into larger containers a couple of weeks ago. They were pot-bound and needed more room. Now growing quickly and I need to find a place in the yard for them...

I haven't figured out pumpkins up here yet. Grew a ton of them in WI. I really liked the sugar pie pumpkins, because they cooked up so beautifully. Can't stand squash, mostly, but those were delightful.

I have to work on my hothouse in the off season, I think. I'm having issues with air movement and drip irrigation. Fixing that should lead to pumpkins, but until then I have peppers by the ton and a few tomatoes, plus cucumbers. I think I would like to be the herb source for this area as well. I grow some wicked good basil and oregano.

312 Blondie-- seeds are cheap. Most produce in stores are hybrids, so their seeds may or may not give you the product you desire.

Highly recommend that you simply pay the 2 dollars or so, for a variety you know will be useful. Look for "sugar pie" or similar.

My BFF grows pumpkins, now on the fourth or fifth year since she bought one for table decor. She doesn't cook them, just gives them away for halloween. Last one she gave me had incredibly stringy flesh. I toasted the seeds for snacking & threw the rest away.

313 The best-producing squashes I've ever grown here are:

Spaghetti-- there were so many, I got sick of the stuff! Maybe a texture thing for me, but it was really good at first, LOL. Didn't store very well. Had to cook & process & freeze.

Acorn-- still my favorite, not stringy, good flavor, small and easy to cook for one or two meals/people. Stores well in a cool room.

Tomatoes (not great, but got a few. In-ground is best IMO)
Okra (plants are also quite lovely decor)
Edible-pod peas
Strawberries
Zucchini (slowed production to a nice, manageable rate!)
Broccoli (BIG planters required! PITA)
Corn (see broccoli)
Peppers (keep pots shaded, but not plants)

I haven't had good luck with grocery taters or garlic-- sometimes they're treated with growth-inhibitors so that people can't grow their own. Bleh.

Wish the seed taters and garlic sets could be had sooner here. Onions are too cheap to bother growing at home.

Check to make sure the strawberries set big fruit. The little ones are PITA, because by the time you hull them, there isn't much fruit left.

I have been digging out the ones the previous owner left and replacing them. Too much work means I harvest less, so I'm fixing that.

I grow tomatoes in containers, in the hot house. They don't set fruit outdoors here--not hot enough. They do fine in 2 gallon bags or pots, and make sure you clip off the various shoots so you just have the one that makes the fruits, and don't let them get dry.

Cucumbers do fine in 1 gallon pots. Keep 'em moist and they produce like crazy. I am, after all, the pickle queen of AK.

Pepper plants do very well in pots. I have 1 gallon and 2 gallon pots and I haven't noticed a difference in either. I recycle the dirt every year, with about 1/4 new stuff, and I fertilize with bone meal and langbeinite. Works good for tomatoes, too.

Now I just need to put in drip irrigation and it pretty much grows itself.

I expect that most women who were the product of the Depression thought that having babies was what you did, and just did so. My mom, in particular, was the baby of her family, and the princess, so dirty diapers and snotty kids were not exactly on her dance card. The problem was she kept having girls, not the coveted boy, so she kept having them, looking for the jackpot. I was the fourth girl, so the fourth disappointment. It doesn't sound very nice, and it wasn't, but that's how it was.

She actually like babies, and took very good care of babies, but not kids. Kids talk back and don't do what they are told.

Not all women were cut out for family life. My mom was certainly not. I don't blame her, and I have certainly forgiven her, but I would never let her near my son to do more damage. Not worth the heartache.

332 The odd thing is that I love kids. Kids are so unpredictable and do amazing things, and don't even think they are amazing, when they are. I guess my son could be considered a disappointment, with his various challenges, but I wouldn't give him up for the world.

My grandson is, of course, the best kid ever, even if he isn't even six months old yet. So clever, so engaged, so damned cute and precious. As all grandkids are, I suppose.

No idea why mom could never see those things, but so be it. She's gone now, and whatever she wrought has passed. She has her reward. She doesn't need me to pile onto that.

Up here you certainly have to plant it in the fall, which means end of September at the latest. I was too lazy this past fall, but this year I shall endeavor. The fresh stuff is just too good to pass up.
