Thursday Overnight Open Thread - July 30, 2026 [Doof]

From MatthewLovesUSA

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Thursday ONT! Mixed bag of content for those who care. Open thread, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

From the "Wait - she wasn't already dead??" files --

HOc6Jn6aAAAwru3-rr.jpg

It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to Jeanne Gibson, our beloved Rosie the Riveter, has passed away today, July 29, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100. With her passing, we don't simply mourn the loss of a beloved friend, we honor the life of an American hero whose courage, dedication, and unwavering spirit helped shape history, and will continue to inspire generations to come.

At just 18 years old, Jeanne left her home in Minnesota in the summer of 1944 and answered her nation's call, becoming a welder at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle. With determination and grit, she helped build destroyers that strengthened the Allied war effort during World War II. She later continued her service with the Army Transportation Corps in Juneau, Alaska, embodying the resilience and patriotism of the Greatest Generation.

Couple who welcomed more than 60 foster children honored by Savannah Bananas

A South Florida couple who has opened their home to dozens of children is being recognized by the Savannah Bananas through the team's Bananas Foster initiative.

John and Tammy McGuire were honored during a recent Florida game for their commitment to foster care and adoption, causes that have long been part of their family history.

"My grandmother and grandfather ran an orphanage, and John's mother adopted a relative placement," Tammy McGuire said.

The McGuires had children of their own when they decided to become foster parents, believing they could make a difference in the lives of children in need. Over the years, 61 children have stayed in their home.

Bravo to the McGuires for making a difference for all of those children!

Some robotaxis approved to operate without steering wheels and losing the brake pedal could be next

960x0-rr.jpg

Federal regulators are clearing the way for robotaxis to operate without manual controls like steering wheels or eventually even brake pedals as the rules start to catch up to the evolving technology.

Amazon’s fully autonomous Zoox vehicles got approval Thursday to begin charging customers for rides in the specially designed cars that feature four inward-facing seats once they secure state and local approval. Zoox has already been offering free rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco since last year. At least a couple people were waiting at most stops Thursday afternoon for rides up and down the Vegas strip aboard one of the distinctive boxy-shaped vehicles.

“It’s kind of scary at first, but when I just got used to it, it’s really cool and chilling. I really liked the music and how you can adjust the temperature,” Chloe Huu from Ann Arbor, Michigan, said after taking a ride in a Zoox Thursday. But the projected wait time for the ride kept changing, which made it hard to plan.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also proposed a rule last month to allow robotaxis to operate without brake pedals, but that proposal is still pending. Administrator Jonathan Morrison said his agency wants to update the regulations to fit these fully autonomous vehicles while still acting as the “cop on the beat to make sure that this is being done right.”

Long article. Check out the whole thing.

My sweet Mama was not a good cook, but even she would not fix that horror. She inherited her talent from her English mother who cooked bland. My brothers would laugh at me if she made meatloaf as I'd hide it the best I could in mashed potatoes. It had the consistency of a sponge and I still haven't figured out how she did that...and don't want to know.

Thankful my father's mother was a fantastic cook of everything as she learned as a day student at a French convent. On the border of MS and LA. I learned there is good food you can make from her: French, Creole, seafood, and she baked. Fantastic.

The cabinets were oak from 1994. Shower door a mess, slick tile floors, etc. I wanted dark teal & that's what I got. It looks more like a dresser than vanity, if that makes sense.

We upgraded our bathrooms in FL before we moved, but cream glossy paint(built home for 20yrs) & two different owners have kept the bathrooms as we left them. Same deal: wooden appliques & painted over it all. New light fixures and hardware and done.

Sometimes I miss Florida, mostly my pool. Dang it. I do have mountains now but it's hot & not my favorite time of year.

Miami Vice just started the year we moved (1984) with a newborn and 2yr old. Our Friday night date. Adding '80's music to the show was great.

How bad is the gaslighting by the Leftist press and the "elites" in Europe and the U.S., that supporting policies to protect women from murder makes you Far Right?

No wonder the Democrat party is having trouble finding any "real men" to run as candidates. I thought protecting females was the default position for any manly man.***

Mine in nursing school:
Cereal, juice and instant coffee poison
Cheeseburger, fries, Coke at student union or hospital
Cheesburger, fries, salad, milk for dinner unless it looked edible. Maybe dessert.

Never gained an ounce. Youth and a lot of walking as I did not own a car (Daddy would not let me take the Impala and it was in his name...it was his last desperate try to keep me from moving).

I had legs of steel and rode busses or got rides with friends or the dude that married me.

I hitchhiked one time and got picked up by an undercover cop in a heavy snowstorm on Thanksgiving at 0615 for work as a nurse tech...I didn't know the busses were not running that day. I was freaked out as he yelled at me for most of the ride, got my MS ID and I thought he'd call my parents.

I said let me out a few blocks from the hospital and I'd walk.No. He drove me to the front door and then I thought he'd march me into the nursing director's office. He said he'd arrest me if he caught me again.

Does anyone have a count for the number of times "witnesses" have pleaded the 5th before Congress?

But Tony Fauci ... 100? What major, international, world-wide, James-Bond-super-arch-villain-grade Do-er of Evil could he be protecting?
