Coalition of Immigrant-Owned Grocery Stores Will Sue Communist Terrorist Zohran Mamdani for Using State Money to Subsidize Their Competitors

The state-run grocery stores, if they ever come to be, will not have to pay taxes and will not have to pay rent.

They will drive private enterprise stores out of business. Which is the whole point. Socialism and communism destroy functioning systems so that they can present themselves as the solution to all of the problems they themselves have caused.

An immigrant-led business group is gearing up to sue New York City over Mayor Zohran Mamdani's controversial plan to open five taxpayer-funded supermarkets -- claiming the $70 million project will create unfair competition for nearby stores, The Post has learned.
As the far-left mayor announced new details of his plan this week -- including a 30% discount on basic items like produce, meat, milk, cheese and bread -- the Multicultural Business Coalition's board voted to file a lawsuit in the coming weeks to block the pricey initiative, the group's chairman Frank Garcia told The Post.
"The mayor doesn't seem to want to sit down with us," Garcia said, adding that Mamdani "won't be able to bully these lawyers we are going to bring in."

The mayor's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
MBC -- formed earlier this year to create a unified front against Mamdani's grocery policy -- includes 50 chambers of commerce representing Asian, African, Caribbean, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and Jewish-owned businesses in New York.

The nonprofit MBC plans to raise $1 million to fight some of the mayor's initiatives, Garcia said, adding that the suit "should be a non-partisan initiative." The group plans to send a letter in the coming days notifying Mamdani's office of its plans to take legal action.
The funds will go toward the lawsuit and efforts to raise awareness about the plight of its mom-and-pop shop members, many of whom struggle to secure capital, fend off shoplifters and keep up with rising costs including rent and taxes.

Meanwhile, longtime NYC residents are complaining that the communist terrorist has put them on a list of people whose properties will be taxed at sky-high rates -- unless they can prove to the city's socialist satisfaction that they live in their homes.

New Yorkers were seething Tuesday after Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration alerted them they'd be on the hook for the state's new pied-a-terre tax -- which was explicitly sold as a levy targeting wealthy owners of luxury second homes.
Longtime residents -- some who have called the Big Apple home for decades and own a single abode in the city -- told The Post they were shocked to get hit with five-figure tax bills they believe were mistakenly mailed out, and are now being forced to navigate a bureaucratic labyrinth to prove it.
"Whoever's behind this, who I can only assume is the mayor, didn't take the 30 seconds to research," said Karen Young, president and founder of New York and Paris-based beauty marketing company The Young Group, who has lived in New York since 1972.

She was stunned when she received a letter from the city Department of Finance asking for $43,000 in pied-a-terre tax on her West 95th Street brownstone, which she's lived in with her husband for 30 years.
"Is this a witch hunt?" she asked, exasperated.
Mamdani not only gloats about 'taxing the rich,' he lies as well
"I just sort of line up all of these things and think 'why are you picking on us?'" Young said.
"As a faithful New Yorker since 1972, I find it not only insulting but painful," she fumed, "Is anybody paying any attention, or any thinking, or two minutes of research. Just look me up!"
Young said she went to the DOF's website to attempt to prove her permanent residency -- but quickly hit a brick wall.

"It's a cumbersome process to prove that I'm a primary resident, which just seems absurd. My jury summons come here, I pay my taxes from here, my utilities," she said.
Despite the department telling her the process to appeal or challenge the bill was as easy as uploading a driver's license, Young said she was forced to pay her estate lawyer to get the proper documentation after spending three fruitless hours on the website trying to do it herself.
"Apparently they haven't checked their own website. And I'm tech-savvy!" she insisted.

Yes, the communists say that you can avoid having your property confiscated through ruinous taxation if you jump through their bureaucratic hurdles -- but they're the ones who decide how onerous those hurdles will be, and they profit from citizens failing to run their commie gauntlet.

13 It's a solid lawsuit. The prices in the commie stores sit about 30% lower than privately owned grocery stores. Profit in a privately owned store is about 1% to 3% on each item. So about 27% to 29% of the reduction on Commie prices are nothing more than a hidden tax to NY taxpayers. Mamdani was trying to state that entire savings reduction was based only on profits of the "greedy" retailers.

Looking forward to discovery on that lawsuit. Should be fun.

41 I would suspect the proof of residency in New York City would include handing over copies of all utility bills, property tax bills, and state and federal income tax returns from the previous year.

Providing a NY state drivers license only proves you're a resident of the state, not a resident of NYC.

In my county, I've got provide all of the above documentation to get a "Homestead Tax" exemption for a much lower property tax rate, instead of the county having to prove I'm living in a second home and trying to avoid the higher rate.

I'd expect no less from bureaucracy running the city of New York.

Those two things are separate problems. But let’s assume they did - they are still being capitalists, they are still paying taxes, they are still keeping people on a payroll. They are paying the loan back, or paid it back. They are paying rent. Why in the world would we be okay with that type of person being put out of business? We should be in the camp of promoting business ownership.

Note, I have an SBA loan I got for the purchase of my business. It didn’t qualify for a minority targeted loan, it’s just a traditional SBA, but it’s still a government backed loan. The purpose of them is to promote business growth. Now I would rather put pencils on my eyes than go through the process again, mind you. They didn’t just hand me money. It was painful.

128 Growing up in Montgomery County, MD in the 60's and 70's I recall a grocery store called "CO-OP" that hung around for a number of years. IIRC, and I was just a little kid, but I think they worked with local growers and small businesses. My mom would go there periodically for certain things, but never meats... because they seldom had any worth buying.

I think the store was setup as something similar to a state (think government/Socialist) run biz. Montgomery County was home to many Western, and Eastern Europeans who worked for various embassies or whatever. And the county, even back then, was very commie curious.

The joint closed up after only a couple years. Giant and Safeway did them in.

131 In college I worked for an “immigrant small business”. It was a bodega type place but not in New York so it’s called a store.

They were Greeks. Elder dad and two siblings. Dad fresh off the boat barely spoke English 30 years later. Siblings born here.

No laws were followed. I got paid in cash at the end of my shift. No taxes paid no fica collected nothing. I don’t know if they had a license to sell alcohol but they sold a lot of it to very young people’s. This was back when renting VHS tapes was a thing. The brother would go to blockbuster rent the latest movies then make copies and rent those out for $2. And yes they’d buy soda in bulk from a warehouse club, then sell the items individually at 300% markup.

That’s how ALL these places operate.

But it was fun another. Especially then the siblings and the dad would yell at each other in Greek. Which was pretty much all the time.

IIRC, and I was just a little kid, but I think they worked with local growers and small businesses. My mom would go there periodically for certain things, but never meats... because they seldom had any worth buying.

I think the store was setup as something similar to a state (think government/Socialist) run biz. Montgomery County was home to many Western, and Eastern Europeans who worked for various embassies or whatever. And the county, even back then, was very commie curious.

The joint closed up after only a couple years. Giant and Safeway did them in.

It's not uncommon in cities and counties where there are a lot of non-primary residences (think lakes, beaches, vacation destinations) to charge a higher rate on property taxes to non-residents.

I've never quite understood why you want to charge people more who are receiving less government services, other than the targets have at least a second residence and therefore are rich and deserve it.

The local governments get away with it, though.

If somebody wants to take that all the way up to the Supreme Court I'm all for it.
