House Committee Issues Subpoenas to Far-Left Chinese Asset Megadonor Neville Roy Singham

They suspect that China is pumping money into his NGOs for propaganda against the US, but those payoffs are being hidden as anonymous "charitable" donations.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., has issued subpoenas to three tax-exempt organizations tied to socialist megadonor Neville Roy Singham, an American multimillionaire living in Shanghai with ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

The subpoenas have been served, a spokesperson for Smith's office told Just the News, on BreakThrough News, Tricontinental and The People's Forum, all three of which are funded, at least in part, by Singham. The subpoenas come after nearly a year of the Committee's attempts to get answers from the three non-profit organizations regarding foreign influence in U.S. nonprofits.

Hundreds of millions in campaign funding concealed

"For months, the Ways and Means Committee has been investigating how the Chinese Communist Party has been taking advantage of our country's laws through its tax-exempt sector to sow chaos and division here in the United States," Smith said in a statement. "Public reporting has traced hundreds of millions of dollars from Neville Roy Singham -- a tech mogul living in Shanghai -- that was funneled through a web of shell companies and donor-advised funds that concealed the true source of the money before it reached these organizations."

...

"Three non-profits connected to Mr. Singham -- BreakThrough News, Tricontinental, and The People's Forum -- have stonewalled the Ways and Means Committee's investigation. That ends now," Smith said in his statement. "These subpoenas will compel the production of the documents they have withheld for months and will help expose how America's tax laws and charitable sector may have been exploited to advance the CCP's influence operations inside the United States. The American people deserve to know whether the CCP has exploited America's tax-exempt sector to advance its agenda. These subpoenas will allow the Ways and Means Committee to identify the networks that exploit our tax laws, and further expose the urgent need for legislation to close those loopholes for good."

...

The congressional subpoenas are the latest move against Singham, who is also under federal investigation by a grand jury in New York for possible violations of tax and foreign agent laws, Just the News previously reported. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche authorized the grand jury to issue subpoenas as part of an investigation into Singham and his financial network. The investigation was launched by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton for the Southern District of New York.

Meanwhile, Natalie Winters has published a list of fake journalists whom she claims are being funded by China to propagandize for them.

It's a Who's Who of execrable online leftistss.

REVEALED: Here Are the Mainstream Journalists on China's Payroll 🚨

I exclusively uncovered the identities of prominent U.S. journalists flown to China by a CCP-linked influence operation seeking "favorable coverage" and "positive messages" about Beijing. 🧵

The names include:

- Ezra Klein, New York Times columnist
- Matthew Yglesias, Vox co-founder
- Ronald Brownstein, CNN senior political analyst
- Bradford Plumer, New York Times reporter
- Marjorie Miller, former Associated Press vice president

Also identified:

- Steve Clemons, former The Hill editor-at-large
- David Rohde, MS NOW senior national security reporter
- Jonathan Alter, NBC News and MSNBC political analyst
- David Sweeney, former NPR managing editor
- Daniel Gross, former Yahoo Finance columnist

Also on the roster:

- Marilyn Geewax, former NPR senior editor
- Kathleen Deveny, former Newsweek editor
- Tom Omestad, former U.S. News & World Report correspondent
- Steve Chapman, former Chicago Tribune columnist
- Bruce Stokes, former National Journal correspondent

The list continues:

- Craig Gilbert, former Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Washington bureau chief
- Tony Semerad, Salt Lake Tribune reporter
- Shikha Dalmia, former The Week columnist
- Jonathan Broder, former Newsweek senior writer

Also identified:

- Cristi Kempf, former Chicago Tribune associate managing editor
- Jon Healey, Los Angeles Times deputy editorial page editor
- Julian Pecquet, former Foreign Affairs reporter

Trip organizer CUSEF was founded by Tung Chee-hwa, a former senior official in the CCP's United Front system, the influence apparatus Beijing uses to cultivate foreign elites and shape institutions outside China.

A bipartisan congressional report says the United Front works to "co-opt and neutralize sources of potential opposition" to the CCP.

American media was not incidental to the strategy. It was a target.

The access went far beyond conference rooms.

American journalists were taken on curated tours through China, including visits to Chinese military bases, by the same network seeking favorable coverage.

Then came the coverage.

Shikha Dalmia published "China Bashing is for Losers."

Bradford Plumer praised Beijing's climate agenda.

Bruce Stokes warned that economic "decoupling" from China would "backfire."

Catherine Rampell repeatedly attacked Trump's China policies.

One dispatch from her CUSEF-funded trip amplified Chinese officials portraying America as the aggressor and urged Washington to abandon its "zero-sum-game attitude" toward Beijing.

Her substack is here.

The Leaked Report

The internal report obtained by this publication concerns C100's November 2012 delegation to Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou.

The operation cost approximately $60,000.

It brought five American media figures to China:

Clive Crook

Brian Lehrer

Winnie O'Kelley

Gary Silverman

Jonathan Tepperman

The journalists participated in approximately 20 meetings and visits involving Chinese government officials, state media representatives, business executives, academics and policy figures.

...

The itinerary also included upscale hotels, regional Chinese cuisine, sightseeing and corporate tours.

Journalists Returned Ready to Reshape Coverage

Winnie O'Kelley was then deputy business editor at The New York Times.

She called the trip "eye opening" politically, economically and culturally, adding that it made her more aware of what she characterized as the Chinese preference for "gray areas" and pragmatism.

She then explained how the experience would influence her work at the newspaper:

"I think that I will do a much better job of editing stories from all cross Asia. I am taking back several story ideas and will shape my staff across Asia in some different ways. I hope to add at least one business reporter in China."

Gary Silverman, then U.S. news editor and deputy managing editor at the Financial Times, was equally direct:

"I don't think that I will ever think or write about China in the future without reflecting on what I learned this week."

WNYC's Brian Lehrer said the trip improved his understanding of the complexities of Chinese politics and the boundaries of political debate inside the country.

The internal report then states:

"He confirmed that his perception of China changed 'in 100 ways.'"

...

The operation gave the editor of one of America's most influential foreign-policy publications a network of handpicked Chinese contacts he intended to continue consulting.

Clive Crook, then a senior editor at The Atlantic, said the program gave him a new conviction that China was a "huge and fascinating story" and that the world was pivoting around the country.

He told the organizers:

"I don't see how you could do a better job in the time available. Just keep it up!"

The internal report then listed articles Crook published after the trip, including:

"Why China and the U.S. Can Be Capitalist Comrades"

"China's Ghost Towns Won't Have a Hard Landing"

C100 even documented the change in attitude and then recorded the resulting coverage.

Fudan University professor Shen Dingli offered perhaps the clearest assessment of the operation:

"It is hard to speak on China without being to the country. You made the change!"

That statement captures what C100's public descriptions attempted to obscure.

The program targeted influential American journalists, controlled their exposure to China and privately celebrated when their perceptions changed.

The Paper Trail Shows This Was an Influence Operation

The leaked internal report was not an outlier.

In 2007, C100 launched an initiative to "enhance understanding and improve perceptions of China in the U.S." By 2010, it explicitly described the role participants were expected to play after returning:

"We hope that they will share their China experience with their peers to make reporting and coverage of China as balanced and objective as possible."

C100 controlled the experience it wanted those journalists to share. Delegates stayed at the St. Regis Beijing, visited the Great Wall and Forbidden City, attended a dinner inside the Great Hall of the People, toured the China Tibetology Research Center and received access to senior political figures, including United Front-linked CUSEF founder Tung Chee-hwa.

...

By 2013, C100 was publicly touting the statistic that most clearly exposed the program's purpose:

"70% reported improved opinions of the country after visitation."

Also, remember about 12 years before that when Democrats who had just seen Kerry lose to Bush and made a public statement to the world "We're sorry, World" (or something like that), suggested that the rest of the world was just to affected by what happens in America, and really deserve some kind of representation in our elections?

Of course that went nowhere, but they did make a big show of it for a week or so.

Dem ideas change like the wind because they're only about what advances the Democrat party.

Donor money has always been accompanied by government money to favored politicians. Singham is probably funneling his money and CCP money.

Generally speaking, the billionaire willing to spend their own money - on anything - became billionaire either through inheritance or divorce. The ones who made the money are willing to funnel someone else's money to destroy America but they won't use their own.

Jeff Bezos, shopkeeper, is a rare exception but that's because he's mostly an idiot who spends his time trying to ape Elon Musk.

114 The different facets of this are deep. For example, China makes a killing selling "green energy" products to the West. So, look for the "journalists" who fell all over themselves to promote "Climate Change" while simuntaneously ignoring China's counter actions.

The different facets of this are deep. For example, China makes a killing selling "green energy" products to the West. Secondly, the West institutes these "green" energy policies which hampers the West's economies. So, a double benefit to China, who is full speed ahead on Coal Plants while declaring themselves a developing country and therefore not subject to UN Climate Change policy.

Posted by: Orson at July 28, 2026 06:59 PM (dIske)

The slanty commies love green energy products because they can make a shitload of money at it. They're not stupid enough to actually USE it.

I really enjoy listening to Sarah Paine talking geopolitics on yootoob, and she gets most things right, but she has two big glaring flaws: She has the standard academic Trump-hate because she isn't interested in learning WHY he acts the way he does internationally. And she actually thinks that green energy is going to turn China into a full-on superpower, even though she's supposed to be a China expert. Which is one of the dumbest takes on geopolitics to come out of an academic's pie-hole.

Posted by: I'm So Old at July 28, 2026 06:54 PM (e4fOb)

Or... because emotion is the enemy. Politicians use emotion because they understand that once you get emotional on an issue, you stop thinking about it. There is very little in life which requires hair on fire. What you have to do is calmly understand your situation and find a way to better it.

I saw a video of some woman complaining about how capitalism had done her dirty. She went to a 'good' school. Got a PhD. In soil biology. And now, just because she refuses to move out of San Francisco, her degree is useless. And it's the Boomer's fault.

Cuz we told her to get a degree for which there was little demand. And we told her to get a degree which might require that she relocate. And we made everything expensive (not her, voting to increase the minimum wage every other month.)

Aaaaaaaaaaaah! Hair on fire. Not fair. Boomer bad.

Is your life better now?
