If AARP opposes something, I'm in favor of it by default

AARP to Congress: ‘We strongly object to fast-tracking Social Security changes’

Social Security has just about six years before it may need to start reducing retirement benefits — unless Congress acts sooner.
Earlier this month, a bipartisan group of senators put forward a proposal that outlines a process to make a Social Security overhaul happen faster.
Now, AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that advocates on senior issues, said it opposes the senators’ bill, called the Protecting Retirement Opportunities and Maintaining Income Security for Everyone, or PROMISE, Act.
“We strongly object to fast-tracking Social Security changes through Congress, as your bill would do,” AARP Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer Nancy LeaMond wrote in a July 21 letter addressed to Sens. Dick Durbin, the Democratic Whip from Illinois; and Bill Cassidy, R-Louisiana. Durbin and Cassidy are among the lawmakers who introduced the PROMISE Act proposal.

World’s largest jellyfish spotted near Cape Cod

One of the planet’s largest species of jellyfish—the Lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata)—have been making unwelcome appearances on Massachusetts beaches, as reported by the Boston Globe.

“Lion’s Mane jellyfish are currently appearing in unusually large numbers off Cape Cod,” reads a social media post by the Sandwich Marina – Sandwich Harbormaster in Cape Cod. “While Lion’s Mane is normally seen from late spring through summer, this year reports began in May, with exceptionally high densities observed by mid-June. Similar blooms have occurred in the past, including in 2020. Experts believe factors such as water temperatures and available food sources may contribute to these increases.”
Furthermore, the post reminds people to not touch jellyfish—whether they’re on the beach or in the water. It’s generally a good idea to stay away from them, as tentacles can be hard to spot. In the case of a sting, wash the spot with warm water and use tweezers to get rid of the tentacles. You can use vinegar to help get rid of the sting.

I watched the enshittification of Google search in real time. Early 2000s. I put together a website that was soon ranked on the first page - due to it being a great website for the topic. Traffic. There might be many proprietary metrics they look at, but it had to be that.

When I wanted to find something obscure, a carefully worded search string would bring up content related pages. It was awesome.

And then, like a switch being thrown, it just didn’t work any longer. Maybe they should have broke the search engine into a “most relevant” instead of “pays for page placement”.

They broke it. Then they did something really egregious. They started suppressing relevant information, because they didn’t like it. That’s bullshit. They try to “nudge” you to Only Approved Narratives

In my youth, Harry Carey did White Sox games with Jimmy Piersall. For those who don't know Piersall was an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox whose mental issues were the subject of the movie Fear Strikes Out starring Anthony Perkins and, iirc, Karl Maldin. His mental issues had not disappeared completely when he became the color man of the broadcast. Between that and Harry usually being three sheets to the wind by the Seventh inning stretch, it didn't really matter what was happening on the field, a good time was being had by all.

The kicker is, if you cut down or disable the cameras, that just means they can buy more, and then buy cameras to watch the cameras, so if they are destroyed it actually helps the scam.

Woodpeckers will drum on anything that makes noise. The more noise the better; I think it's part of their mating ritual.

My parents had one of those dinner-plate-sized plastic outdoor thermometers hanging on a tree in their back yard. Woodpeckers loved banging on that thing.

And yes, the athletic ability displayed is every bit as much as in traditional gymnastic sports. If not for the association with sexually suggestive entertainment, I think it would be a standard gymnastic sport. They use two poles, one fixed and one spinning. The fixed pole demonstrates strength, somewhat akin to fixed rings, while the spinning pole requires the kind of dexterity and strength used in offset parallel bars.

Great white sharks have been spotted by drones being near shores on both coast, within a few yards of people swimming. But the people could not see them. Having lived in WI for years, the voice of baseball was always Bob Uecker. If the game was lousy, which it was for several years, he got better and better. His stories and bullshit were epic. If you haven't seen his speech at the Hall of Fame, look it up on Yutube.

There was an old fart living on the south end of Anchorage back in the 1960's. He was a homesteader of the old school variety. At some point, the city put up a stop light at an intersection near his cabin. He came out once a week and blew it away with a shotgun.

The city replaced it about 12 times before he got fed up and disappeared, nobody knows where.

242 Got the hayloft door rehung on the old barn today. Took the better part of 6 hours. I used a warehouse stocking ladder thing to climb up there. Because the ground was sloping, its two "front" wheels were on the plywood sheet making the stoop for the main floor man door. "Rear" landing legs were on stacks of wood blocks. Because the whole shebang was tippy, I added diagonal braces screwed to studs in the barn wall, and C-clamped to the tall legs on the ladder. Then I drove a truck up to each side of the rear of the ladder, and pinned it between the two truck bumpers, so it could not slip sideways. Result? It felt real solid, but i was still leery of climbing it.

256 So, with the ladder in place, I was faced with the problem of hoisting the door up about 9 feet. I put a pulley block on a J-hook made of flat bar, and hung it on the window sill of the (broken out) hayloft window. Passed a rope through the block, put the end through a hole I drilled in the door, and made a Figure-8 knot on the back side. Upon hauling on the rope, the first J-hook straightened out. Fail! Made a stronger J-hook out of much thicker flat bar. Success! Took a lot grunt and maneuvering the hanging door around obstacles, but I finally got it seated in the recess from which it had fallen. Got enough screws driven to ensure it will remain there. Put tools and vehicles away. The ladder can stay there until I fire up the tractor, and tote it someplace else.

Well I say this. Somebody stole jersey's normal summer. Usually its satan's ass crack out there. I don't even look at a motorcycle in july, sometimes most of the summer. This july has been amazing. I was out the last 3 days, probably 500 miles worth in 3 days, and had to wear a sweatshirt all 3 days, and its been that way all of july other than that one hot week. It actually was cold a few nights. I was coming home at 7pm and the sweatshirt almost wasn't enough. Other than that one week of blast furnace the entire summer so far has been perfect riding weather. Humidity in low 40's, not the usual 90s. Climate change is bullshit, but I'm starting to believe in climate swapping, or replacement, or something. We definitely got somebody else's weather this summer.

They passed a law in 2012 that explicitly granted ownership rights of "personal property" to the astronauts from all missions up to Apollo-Soyuz. After that, it all belongs to NASA, unless they specifically grant it.

In the mid-2000s, NASA started aggressively trying to block auctions and sales of such property that the astronauts kept. NASA had no problem with them keeping such stuff, but then decided to make a stink about it. The law clarified that up to Apollo-Soyuz, it belonged to the astronaut.

The law excludes any "celestial material", which would be moon rocks. It just says that any personal property (of terrestrial origin, of course) that NASA didn't at the time demand to be returned belonged to the astronauts.

290 Unless things have changed, and I don't think they have, sea urchin roe ("uni") from the urchin-infested Channel Islands area (off Ventura and Santa Barbara, CA) is a big business. Used to be that it would be flown to Japan on cargo jets using Port Hueneme airfield (I think?). They're definitely common here (SoCal coastal waters).

Have never been stung by a jellyfish, though have had close calls (suckers floating up against my leg, but no stinging cells touching). Always wore gloves/skin suits and never touched anything when skin or scuba diving. Common sense pays off.

I can't say for sure, but I'm 99% certain that the hammer would've been "mission hardware" that had to be tested and approved by NASA for purpose. Just about everything was, they didn't use anything that wasn't tested.

What that 2012 law said was essentially, unless NASA demanded such things be returned at the time, and didn't have a problem with the astronaut keeping it, then it belonged to the astronaut, not NASA or the federal govt.

People were changing their work schedules to work Saturdays so they could do something on the (consistently) beautiful dry Mondays. I remember watching the July 4 Mall fireworks - sweatshirt, cool - instead of the humid blast furnace that was the norm.

Looking it up, NASA did allow each astronaut to carry "Personal Propery Kits", no more than 5 lbs total, and no more than 0.5 lbs on the lunar module for their own purposes. But it had to be itemized and approved.

They did famously smuggle a few items from time to time.

It is now on display at the USGA Golf Museum and Library.

Lore has it he smuggled it, but he didn't. NASA approved it, reluctantly, as part of his personal property kit mentioned above.

NASA thought it would be too frivolous looking, especially right after Apollo 13. Shephard argued it would be of "scientific value" to demonstrate the Moon's low gravity compared to earth. NASA agreed on the condition he use it only if it the mission went well, and after all the serious stuff was accomplished.
