Top Story

Anthropic's Opus 5 model is here - nearly as smart as Fable for half the price, and less annoying. (Engadget)

It has been trained similarly but with much less effort towards security, so it isn't as clever at hacking systems or at preventing your systems from being hacked, but it hasn't been forced into I'M SORRY DAVE I'M AFRAID I CAN'T DO THAT insanity that flips on the moment you stray into anything even the tiniest bit questionable.

I'll give it a try since I'm on the $20 Claude plan making Opus 5 free of additional charge while Fable 5 uses my limited credits. (Paying accounts received $100 worth of credits free, but I want to keep those for actual security scans.)

Also worth noting: If Fable 5 runs into trouble or doubt, it doesn't just run in circles, scream and shout, it can silently drop back to Opus. This can happen even if your question is entirely orthogonal to security issues.

Astronomers have discovered the first THAT'S NO MOON, THAT'S A CATEGORISATION ERROR outside of our solar system. (Space)

That is, it's a solid body orbiting another celestial body orbiting a star - clearly a moon - except that the body in the middle is a brown dwarf, a "failed star".

Wait. Yes, it says right on the AMD presentation that Zen 7 uses the same server socket as Zen 6, but... Oh. The other slide doesn't explicitly say DDR6 - which would require a socket change - but a vaguer "next gen memory".

Eromanga is a tiny Outback town named for the local Aboriginal word meaning "windy plain", and prides itself as being the Australian settlement most distant from the sea.

It was also - by complete coincidence - once precisely on the shore of a massive inland sea in the Cretaceous period. It has a local museum featuring some remarkable fossils.

It also means something completely different in Japanese, so my driving a Shinkansen route through it was a source of joy when it fell into my lap as the inevitable outcome of my worldbuilding.

I saw that brown dwarf satellite story a day or so ago. The brown dwarf about 30ish Jupiter masses, and it's satellite is a minimum of about 1 Jupiter mass.

The brown dwarf orbits about 67 AU from it's star, a red dwarf. And the Jupiter mass satellite orbits about 0.6 AU or so from the brown dwarf.

If the brown dwarf were a star, the satellite would be called a planet. It would be a "S -type" orbiting planet is a binary system (the other is a P-type, circumbinary orbit where the planet is far enough away and orbits the center of mass of both stars in a close binary).

If the brown dwarf were a planet, the satellite would be a moon. So, it's indeed a category thing, with no agreed upon definition.

That Jupiter mass satellite is far enough away from the brown dwarf it could itself have moons of its own. Making it maybe a "sub-moon", "moonlet" or even "moon-moon". But, since it can't be called a moon, then we have a problem with naming as well.

Most exoplanets in binary systems discovered so far are S-types. But a few P-types have been discovered, all of them gas giants I believe.

Anyway, such a P-type rocky planet would be a Tatooine type world, with two suns close to the same size looming in the sky.

Hawaii Five-O . . . I remember seeing the two-hour pilot film, enjoying it, and thinking it was more of a spy story and less of the cop show that the TV series became. Still the most exciting TV theme, after "Secret Agent Man" (maybe), of all time. And if you look at the original intro of the HFO series on YooToob, you'll be astonished at how modern and MTV video-like it is, how sharp the edits are . . . and astonished that it was cut together without computer assistance, not in 1968.

No. Stability of sub-moons is a tricky thing. They can theoretically exist, and I think Callisto would meet the stability criteria, as well as Titan around Saturn.

Our Moon would barely meet it, but not really -- the submoon would have to be very tiny, no more than 10 miles in diameter, and the orbital radius would to fall in a very tight range.

37 A busy dream night. At first I was visiting NYC, staying in a hotel that I thought was on the East Side near one of the tunnels to Brooklyn or Queens. Then I was wandering around a gigantic open-air fair with two little old ladies -- this with no memory of how I got to the fair from Manhattan. I lost the ladies and was suddenly wandering in the pre-dawn hours through a big mall, looking for a shop that would sell me some Tums, but the booths and stores were all closed. Finally I came across a diner that was open, and I sat down to eat . . . only to find they had no coffee. And all this time, I still had no idea how I would get back to my hotel in Manhattan.

There was something later about my having to shampoo and wash my hair in a gigantic empty supermarket aisle, but I'm fuzzy on all that. Thankfully.

These are all called "quasi-moons". They are not gravitationally bound to earth, but in a heliocentric orbit in 1:1 resonance with earth. They can look like moons sometimes, but they aren't.

See horseshoe, tadpole, and trojan orbits. They've got all kinds of names for these.

The disk drive on my old computer is failing or, more accurately, has failed. With the help of a recovery program, I was able to copy the most important stuff over to a storage drive, so my music, pictures, spreadsheets, etc. are safe. But still, buying a new desktop was not in my immediate plans.

Though I have to admit I didn't recognize a couple of the female characters: the blonde on the bridge in white, and the exotic-looking one in the Egyptian-style headdress in the scene with Troi and Princess Leia. Michael Pate, a versatile Australian actor (and writer and director), is in this one. I've often thought of trimming my "Commander Riker" beard (which I grew before he did!) back to a ring beard like Mirror Spock's. But that will mean a learning curve to shaving the newly revealed areas. And if I didn't like it, it would take me a while to grow the hedgerows back.

There's a rumor flying around the vicinity of our place here in Sussex that one of the communities is solving the influx of Canada Geese problem with extreme prejudice.

The on-line hysteria in the "dialogue" between the lovers of green greasy shits underfoot everywhere ("We're intruding on their land!") and the lovers of more 'deportations' ("Then you come over and clean off my dock daily!") is intense.

I'm now one-quarter of the way through reviewing each of some 7000 references in my database to see whether the complete paper is available online.

If the current trends hold, my guess is that only about 20-25% of the whole will have them. What I do then is open to question. I may be able to get reprints from some of the authors, but I don't want to spend my declining days or reach their end while in the library stacks at Rice or U of H.

I think I got to play Oregon Trail maybe two times my entire school career. It was still a relatively new game on the Apple II when I was in elementary school so I had to wait until sometime in the 90s to play it.

That issue I was having with my laptop return shortly after declaring it fixed. Turns out it wasn't the Windows update causing the problem after all. It was the Logitech wireless mouse. On a hunch, I swapped it out with another Logitech mouse I had running the desktop in the home office. No issues for several days now.
