The word "planters" or even "planter's" always makes me think of Planters Peanuts.
That's a rooster and a sheep and lamb in the lower right corner, but at first glance I thought it was a miniature camel. The darkness of the sky and the smoke puffing from the chimney makes me think the house is on fire, or the trees just behind the house. "John Steuart Curry (November 14, 1897 – August 29, 1946) was an American painter whose career spanned the years from 1924 until his death. He was noted for his paintings depicting rural life in his home state, Kansas. Along with Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, he was hailed as one of the three great painters of American Regionalism of the first half of the twentieth century. Curry's artistic production was varied, including paintings, book illustrations, prints, and posters."

Curry was born in 1897 and died in 1946, so he did not have a long life. Born in Kansas, died in Wisconsin.
Wiki: Curry was "an American painter whose career spanned the years from 1924 until his death. He was noted for his paintings depicting rural life in his home state, Kansas. Along with Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, he was hailed as one of the three great painters of American Regionalism of the first half of the twentieth century." This isn't something I would hang but it is an effective painting. Curry portrayed a family, centered around a traditional farm home, showing a comfortable prosperity and contentment and he did so effectively. The soft colors and brushwork add to the emotional aspects. The mother's expression sets the tone for the whole scene. There is a 'peaceable kingdom' feel about it, a sense that this is how things should be.
I like this better than most of Curry's historical themes which are often chaotic and highly exaggerated. Posted by: JTB at July 30, 2026 09:54 AM (yTvNw) 106

I read somewhere that he would come up with the rhythm for a piece first (as in Green Acres's "da-da-da-da-da, BOMP BOMP) and then the melody would come afterwards. IIRC, Mizzy also sang the Addams theme. It was supposed to be a placeholder voice, but the studio liked his version. Curry had some very interesting paintings including one of a girl being baptized, a black family on the top of a house being swept away by a flood with the father praying, and a one of wild and intense abolitionist John Brown. I think the only one which I had seen before was the one of John Brown, but maybe there are several different ones of those.

The Art Story
Summary of John Steuart Curry During the Great Depression, John Steuart Curry devoted himself to painting sincere portrayals of the American heartland. At a time when critics were calling for an American vernacular art and the discovery of a usable past, Curry and other Regionalist artists headed the call to paint rural and small town America. These often idealized, even nostalgic, depictions of community, religious life, and indomitable work ethic aimed to provide solace to a populace suffering the effects of a financial disaster and widespread drought. Recognized during his own time, along with Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, Curry painted easel paintings as well as murals that decorated various government buildings. Unfortunately his more traditional style of painting did not sustain his reputation after his death, and Curry remains an often overlooked American painter. I'd pass hanging today's art selection. It's nice but MEH, in my humble unartistic view. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at July 30, 2026 10:42 AM (LL19j) 289

Truthfully, his family never knew about is indiscretions until after he was murdered. And yes, he was murdered in a hotel room by likely the significant other of the woman he was filming at the time.
Posted by: Sponge I hadn't heard that. The theory I'm familiar with was that he was killed by his 'friend' John Carpenter, a gofer and suck-up who was pissed that Crane told him the free ride was over and he was dropping him as a companion. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at July 30, 2026 10:54 AM (qRla/) Crane was bludgeoned with a tripod he was supposedly using at the time. Bob Crane, the actor best known for Hogan's Heroes, was found bludgeoned to death in his Scottsdale, Arizona, apartment on June 29, 1978. His friend John Henry Carpenter was tried for the murder in 1994 but was acquitted, and the case remains officially unsolved. Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at July 30, 2026 10:56 AM (2YhKe) 314

When I say crusade, it has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. More of a term de art describing an action.
