64 This is one of those paintings where the subject matter is secondary to me. But I could spend hours looking at it for the artistry. The brush work reminds me of Andrew Wyeth. The whole scene is pleasant to see, peaceful, nothing garish or exaggerated. I like the realism of the man and the detail, especially the woven slippers. They set a tone for the period and place.

I'm a prison abolitionist for lots of reasons. One is that I find it unacceptably cruel as a form of social organization to lock people in cages and tell them they'll be beaten or killed if they try to get out.

Easier to just end them.

All I was saying was that they understood the value of Russian art and didn't seek to cancel it for ideological reasons (icons aside -- but even a lot of those remained in museums and can still be viewed today).

Portable, private, and they can't really declare it un-valuable the way currencies can. Illegal yes, but that isn't quite the same thing. Ignore people who try to confuse things by compare gold returns with the stock market. Gold and silver are excellent as a substitute for paper currencies. The US dollar used to be "good as gold" but those days are long gone.
