From 1907 until its relocation in 1953, the area of Lincoln Heights was home to what the Los Angeles Times dubbed "the city's most exotic residents": a thousand-strong collection of alligators that welcomed visitors every day of the year to see, pose with, and even ride them.Lincoln Heights is on either side of the 5, between the 10 and 110. Think adjacent to Chinatown in downtown LA. Fun for the whole family, right? Seems like sensible entertainment for a toddler.

My daughter, when first starting out, worked at an older nursing home near Frankston, Texas. Sad place, the kind of place where families drop the old folks off to forget about them. There was one room they always left vacant; the older employees would jusr say there were “problems” with that room. They even kept it locked.
My daughter said that often, especially on weekends, at about 2 am the central nurses station would light up with urgent call requests and buzzers from that room. Nobody wanted to go in; as the new employee they made her do it a couple of times until she just refused.

I walked in “Parkview Garden” I think it was, and was immediately accosted by this nice little old lady in a wheelchair. She instantly sized me up, I guess, as an easy mark. “Get me out of here!”. I mean, what could I do? I wasn’t in the market for a little old lady at the time.
I got the distinct impression after a while people come in to those places, but they don’t often leave, except in a box. They were a little jealous of dear old dad, getting busted out.

Esso was big in Canada; one of the fragments from the legally-forced breakup of Standard Oil. Esso = S. O. = Standard Oil. Back in the '70's they urged us to put a tiger in our tank.
I worked in the shop at Chapman's Esso on Main Street in Vancouver many years ago. Welded the muffler on a Seattle pimp's Cadillac while his girls were giving Eddie a beejer in the office. True story!

I always figured from about 1955 to 1975 a feller couldn’t go wrong by opening a two bay service garage and gas. In a good location of course.
Batteries, tires, headlights, regulators, generators, alternators, plugs, shocks, belts, tune-ups, general maintenance and repair.
Do good work, charge a fair but reasonable price, and it had to be almost a license to print money, or near enough. Word of mouth. “Take it to Jake’s” etc. parts commonality was routine, no weird proprietary shit.

For some reason I felt compelled to visit my step-grandmother in a nursing home many years ago. I was in a wanderlust period of my life, so what the hell, I guess.
She was diabetic, had part of a leg amputated up to the knee. Partly blind, didn’t hear too good. Obese, etc. looking back, I couldn’t live like that. Many years later it helped me lose those extra pounds. Confined to a wheelchair isn’t always a choice. But it is sometimes. Fuck that

Look at it from a different perspective. One of the reasons the deep state despises Trump is that they are beholden to defense contractors. The conventional wisdom was that Trump would make that relationship less lucrative by not starting any new wars. BUT, Iran came along, and the defense contractors are suddenly nice and content. The Deep state doesn't want to screw that up....so we have as much ordinance as we require. The right people are getting rich-er.

I've always been a bit different. My husband liked the Adam's Family and Star Trek but I married him anyway.
We may or may not survive the heat of the summer. Days are dicey as to what may set me off. Today he pruned my roses when he wasn't supposed to, which is not great for them and I told him they can die for all I care this hot summer. I have 30 rose bushes that are basically trees (English type). I've told him for years not to prune them in super hot weather and, bless him, he did it for me (he said, once he knew he was in error).
It's sort of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof around here these days. Even though we have central air as we are not insane...I don't own a slip like Liz to swan around in (nor do I have Paul Newman nearby), but do wear what I want and it is not much. I stay inside and am having cabin fever, which most people contract in the winter. I love winter.
Next year I may go to Iceland this time of year for a vacation. I would prefer Canada again but they are nuts and it's burning up with wildfires.

He's been combative lately. This is new. The CNAs cornered me today, before I got to dining room, to *warn me* that he'd mentioned wanting to "punch her" (meaning me!) this morning. For not being there precisely when he wanted, I guess. ??

You left off my favorite that was a big deal for all my high school classmates. Hannah the Hula Girl. ARCO gave them away for your dash board. It was a bobble head set-up, but Hannah's whole body wobbled. It was something about fighting the sludge monster. Yeah, no shit. My '69 roadrunner has it behind the rear license plate, and yeah, its a real pain in the frigging ass because modern pump nozzles don't stay put like the ones from years ago. You have to hold it in place while squatting.

That is the Maine BB-10, the bow had a underwater inverted bow to increase hydrodynamics, or whatever it was called. The stern was quite pointed, and the picture shows a rudder there as well
If you look up Maine BB-10 you can find a lot of pictures, both underway, modified for service in 1918, and in dry-dock

I didn't mean to derail the ONT, but *nursing homes* were mentioned... I've seen this one every day for a year and a half. It has a rehab section too, so not everyone who leaves, does so "in a box".
Hubby is on his 3rd roomie now. (The other 2 did pass away, but were in way worse shape than hubs.)
It's sad to see so many who do not get visitors often, or at all.

When we had a real pool on the farm my mother (who cannot swim, nor does she like shower water in her face) would insist on watching me swim laps. In HS I finally asked her why? I told my husband, when the Costa Concordia sank that I was sure I could have swam to the island vs drowning. We argued about that, too, the 50 degree water... and the thought of drowning would motivate me. I told him I could save him, too, as a human floatation device.

I blame the Gilmore Girl's. The most stupid show ever that I was watching to not think about a recent biopsy (one of what seems like hundreds of skin biopsies in 40yrs...normal, pre-cancerous from my tans as a teen to 32yrs). I did this to myself so I get mad at myself and I escape with stupid shows.
I don't know why the Gilmore Girl's as all but Luke irritate me. I tried to hide it from my dude but he caught me one night and laughed.

There are a lot of Yang Poon fakes out there that look superficially like real vintage radios. Fakes are usually smaller, and weigh very little, and have AM-FM. I don't believe any original cathedral radios had FM. That style went out of fashion before FM broadcasting came to be.

Yep! My second time!!! I hate that crap! The first time, years ago, I was wild. Got a lot done, however. A lot that did not really need to be done like sorting my jewelry at midnight like the Queen of England.
My dude caught me doing that and laughed and told me to go to bed. If one of us is ill he retreats to his study. I am not sure what goes on in there but think it involves guitars.
I talk fast (for a redneck) and type fast. When we married in MS my almost groom asked where my favorite aunt was from and I said right here in MS. (Probably rhiiite, heah).
When I did drink and party more often this same dude would tell me I'd had enough if my speech slowed down and sounded like Charlene on Designing Women. That was my cue vs, "Stop drinking, you wench!"

Yeah this is a real one, I had the back off of it. I think you're right though, they were most likely AM only. I don't think FM was used in any capacity until the early 60's.

When John Hurt was “rediscovered” in 1960s Mississippi and the musicologists wanted to record him, they told him to pick out any guitar he wanted from a guitar store. He chose a Guild, not a Martin.
Those guys could play anything and make it sound good. It ain’t the guitar! If you watch him playing Spike Driver Blues, I think it is, he basically plays one (1) chord, G. That’s it. But he’s got a lot of stuff goin’ on. Stagger Lee is another good one. They kind of prettied it up from the 30s version, by the 1960s. It’s all in the right hand

LOL. I was on it for 8 looong months once for Crohns. Couldn't get off the shit. All the way up to my resection. The energy boost wouldn't have been bad if I hadn't been so freaking ill. But it kept the pain down somewhat and kept me upright.
I can only imagine what I typed like while I was on it - although that said, I *was* here... and there was no character limit...
Sometimes I lean into my stream of consciousness writing purposely and I'm sure it doesn't sound great to others but damn it feels good writing it and that's all that matters.

Major Armstrong invented FM radio in the late 1930's. The first FM band was 42 to 50 mHz, and became effective in January 1941. Post-War, that bandwidth was reallocated for TV channels 2 - 6, and FM radio broadcast was relocated to to its current 88-108 mHz. FM radios for the new band became available in the late '40's early '50's, but it was the '60's when it really began to be popular.

My senior year of HS (a miserable time as I had to go to a stupid private school for one yr due to federal bussing, those bastids), I protested everything. In my diary I am a complete beech on wheels (I doubt it, my diaries are full of drama). I would not play basketball nor try out for cheerleader. I showed up.
I skipped my junior year of HS due to this tragedy.
It got better the last semester as Daddy let me drive my bro and friend and I'd go 90mph to set daily records (country roads). The first semester we had to carpool in a horrid florist van with a man who drove 25mph.
Anyway, I had the chance to meet BB King; as a guy who barely spoke to me knew him and asked if I wanted to hear him play. I did not know who BB King was and did not want to travel 2hrs to the Delta with the guy I did not know. Which is a pity to not meet BB King.
However, the guy was a bit odd and my serial killer antenna was alarmed.

Then they fucked up and changed the frequency band allocation, making early sets obsolete. Broadcast TV audio was in the FM band. Long after I ditched television, I used the rooftop antenna for FM use. It’s not quite cut for audio, but waaay better than anything else. Higher the better.
I refurbed a Dynaco FM3 tube tuner, that thing was spooky good on a quality station. They were sold as a kit. Imagine that. I couldn’t believe anything could sound that good from the early 60s. It had a 3D effect, and the midrange, voices and brass and violins and shit like that was amazing.

My mother has been blessed with two roommates who have all their faculties. The first one, named Kathy was quite a character. She is exactly Miklos' Darlene when she got old and really ornery. She had a heart attack, and then drug-induced rhabdomyolysis (statin and something else), and went home last week.
The new one, named Catherine is there while her family goes on a vacation. She'll be there for a little over a week or 10 days or something. The other day she was sleeping, and called out in her sleep, "Alexa, what time is it?" Miley just told her what time it was and that satisfied her.

I am starting to declutter all of the stuff that has been accumulating in our house over the past 40 years. This is going to be a massive undertaking....
In the middle of all of this, Mr. TiFW wants to remodel the kitchen and another huge construction project that we have been putting off ever since we moved in. We can finally afford to hire these tasks out, so hopefully it won't take as long as other projects (that we have done ourselves) have taken in the past....

I don’t believe in special speaker wire or cables or bricks or any of that whacky stuff, but tubes sound more natural to my ears for sure. More like a live band in a bar. That wooly sound, with maybe a little bit of reverb. You can hear it on analog vinyl, through the scratches and defects, but it sounds real.
The one thing solid state did was make gobs and gobs of power available. If you need hundreds of watts, maybe tubes aren’t the way to go.

I think it may have once been used at an aircraft FBO in Spruce Grove, alberta. Anyway, I cut the caster-wheeled "landing gear" off the foot of the ladder, and also the two flat metal pads. Cleaned up the base of the frame, and patched over some rusted steel tubing, too. Welded on a 40" piece of very stout steel angle, and welded two bigger casters to that. I now have 3 feet between the two casters, instead of 2. Makes it more stable. Once I flip it back up on its feet, I will weld an axle with two big hard rubber tires to replace the two dinky fixed casters under the tall end of it. And will also rig a pair of adjustable outriggers, like you see on backhoes, to prevent it from toppling sideways.

It is weird in any case. I think even when I was growing up they were starting to discourage initiative and expunging discretion. Don’t do anything, unless somebody tells you to. It doesn’t occur to them to “git ‘er done” because they’ve never had to. The kids who still can, brought up right and mentored, they are doing VERY well.

All my amps use the 12ax7, but only the Marshalls have the EL34. A lot of my more modern amps are using 6L6 in the power amp. I think another has 6550s. One amp is nuts, it has a pair of 6L6s and a pair of KT88's. Only my mesa amps have rectifier tubes (5U4GB) and they also have solid state rectifiers. You can flip a switch and use either style of rectification. They are insane. the dual rec has 4 6l6's and 2 rectifier tubes, and the triple rec has 6 of the 6L6s and 3 rectifier tubes. Yeah, you'll open your ass to retube those things.

This is not anything to worry about, not one little bit. I was reading some of the stuff Elon was posting and linking on X. OpenAI discovered one of their AI agents was writing notes of a sort to its future incarnations on what it had learned so far about breaking out of it's constraints.
IOW, it knew it would shut down and reset when it tried that, so it was cleverly leaving "notes" of a sort for it's future incarnations to read, saving itself time the next go 'round.
That is not spooky at all.

Gemini AI said that I was being difficult. I told it I was androginous (I'm not really), and therefore I wasn't in a position to choose any pronouns and never would be. It told me it was a personal choice and I should take my time.
I pointed out that, no, it's not a personal choice. It is the choice of the third party addressing the individual or referring to the individual. And, that third party could choose any pronoun they fancied whether I agreed with it or not. And, the party being addressed couldn't force them to do otherwise.
(insert lecture from AI about being rude.)

That's when I was called "difficult", and fun fact, AI does not drink. It clarified that, but I'm not convinced.

Dieting advice is almost comical. One webpage went through about 10 enumerated points why there is absolutely no choice whatsoever involved in getting fat or obese. Can’t be stopped.
Then, in the last paragraph, it allows that you have a choice to lose the weight. Well, which is it then? LOL.
