WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham: Keep Men Out of Girls Sports

Sophie Cunningham is a teammate of Caitlin Clark on whatever team they play for, which I assume is the Iowa Cornholers. That's probably not right but no one's going to contradict me because no one wants to admit they know the teams of the WNBA.

She became a meme when she pointed out the thug who'd committed a flagrant foul on her teammate.

Like Caitlin Clark, she is hated and gets hard-fouled a lot because she's white, straight, and pretty in a league dominated by black lesbians.

This isn't going to endear her any further to the Rainbow Racists of the league: She says that girls sports should be reserved for -- this is going to sound a little convoluted but stick with me -- girls.

She says she has nothing against trannies and isn't even political. But, she says, along with showing love, she must also tell the truth.

The ongoing debate over trans athletes' participation in the sports category of their chosen gender has once again reached the WNBA, as Iowa Cornholers guard Sophie Cunningham has joined one side of the hot-button issue.

Oh, so it was the Iowa Cornholers.

In a wide-ranging profile from ESPN's Hallie Grossman, Cunningham, one of the league's most polarizing and recognized players, spoke on her perceived political beliefs because of "what she looks like and where she's from."
Cunningham seemed to deny she is affiliated with the "MAGA" movement after her "MAGA Barbie" nickname went viral. She recently downplayed the White House specifically using her viral pointing meme in a social media post.
However, this latest controversy stems from Cunningham sharing her support in the ESPN profile for the idea that athletes should participate in the gendered sport of their birth, not the one they choose post-transition.
"She'll weigh in on how to 'protect women's sports,"' she says, because she's in that world and feels qualified to speak to that world," Grossman wrote in her profile.
Cunningham added in the profile, "I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,' ... I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men.
"I'm very much in the middle [politically]. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that's all I've ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume."

The problem is the WNBA isn't a sports league as that term is usually understood. It's not a bunch of teams hungry to win because that brings pride and money. There's very little incentive to win or even improve the experience for fans.

The entire WNBA is a big LARPing circle-jerk that doesn't even rise to the level of "competition" in professional wrestling. I remain unsure why, because I played HS basketball but did not have to contend with trannies. I did, however, have to deal with girls who played hard to win and were elbowing my eyeballs and stuff like that.

To my coach's irritation I would let the bigger girl have the ball if it was a tie ball. Another shiner was not worth it (I had two), nor was a jammed knuckle (I don't know how many of those I had).

I played because he made me, our coach. Because I was on the taller side of 5'8" with a great vertical jump.

I did not want to play. I did not want to dribble into crowds of girls to the goal, so I had an outside shot vs all the drama. I shot free throws fine.

I also did not wear my glasses anywhere but in class to see the backboard, so my shots were an accomplishment and nothing but net and two points. Then I warmed the bench as I did not want to mess up my hair.

These girls must really, really want to play and rough it up. I did not and often prayed to stay on the bench.

I had odd injuries in practice and a concussion running the lines. I did not have fun.

One of the things he did was film the ladies' basketball practices. This was right about the time the team was top of the pack in college basketball.

My father would come to games and knew I did not care one bit. Once the coach yelled at me that I had a "jug butt" because I was not running fast enough and Daddy loved it vs getting offended for my self-esteem. I ignored the coach, if it was meant to fire me up. I endured HS because it led to my goal of college and freedom.

We had uniforms passed down from whoever had them years before us at our country school. We did not have our names on them nor pick the number but what fit us. Not fancy: dark blue with gold trim. Gym shorts were, well, short.

I do look good in the yearbook photos, so there's that.

I wanted to like it. I really did. But it went off the rails and stayed there, and they would go multiple episodes with no significant movement in the plot. It turned into a chore to watch, much like TWD. And while I dig naked tavern wenches as much as the next guy, the sex scenes became boring filler material and just weak writing rather than plot points or even competent titillation after awhile.

252 I taught 7th and 8th grade girls basketball. Once. Pretty big Mega Church League. Lots of girls that also played Middle School. My daughter just wanted to win. One time.

Lots of Old Ball Players. Teaching the game as they understood it. Man to man (chic to chic). Set plays. Teams were kind of set ... the long time coached picked all the girls they wanted.

I taught a behind the line 2-3 zone on defense. Flat screens on offense to let a girl get ahead of the defender, and cuts to give her another girl to pass to. And floor balance ... make sure somebody can play free-safety on a turnover.

Kids won the league. Lots of drama. Fuck the lay-up lines. We did loose ball drills to warm up. And how to post up. And how to really screen. Lots of coaches and involved Dads bitching I "didn't coach the right way". And a few folks saying "well, Hell, that's completely different and makes sense". Including a couple local coaches.

Pissed the daughter off the next year. Didn't coach.
