I think I know where my phone problem of no mobile data is. Chrome has wanted a update yet, tried few times to do that and the warning is still there. Seems Spotify works but popping in here get a no internet connection.

The writer says, "Internal Anthropic documents about its plan to scan millions of books, revealed in the copyright lawsuit, don’t make clear why the company wanted to destroy the books in the process."

I don't think it's been established that the company "wanted to destroy the books in the process." Some scanning processes are destructive; others are not--as the writer says next. But, "want"?

25 @14/m: They're trying to avoid the copyright mess they're currently embroiled in (millions of books copied into the LLMs without paying for copies now resulting in them being sued for grand-scale copyright violation.) And since it's for a commercial purpose, that may result in criminal charges as well as being a civil tort.

Destroying the original (while preserving an image of the cover plus the purchase receipt) would prove that they did indeed purchase a copy of the material for their use, but destroying their copy (as is their right) lets them:

a) Avoid physical storage fees
b) Avoids them having two copies (the original and the digital copy they made without permission of the copyright holder.) They'll try to argue that the digital copy now takes the place of the physical one, since they only have "one copy" that they paid for.

And that's what any legal case in copyright law will hinge on. Is the act of reading a physical object in order to make a digital one, by itself, a violation of that copyright?

Remember that for computer software licenses, the license holder grants you the right to make that second copy in memory so the software can run, otherwise you couldn't legally run the software since there are now two copies (the one on the media, and the one in memory.)

The copyright holder has to grant you the license to make that second copy, otherwise you made a copy in violation of the copyright holder's rights.

The LLMs are going to try to argue they only have the one copy in memory now, but... the act of making the copy without being granted the right by the copyright holder is in itself a violation. There is no "book license" that grants that right.

So the LLMs are likely going to try to twist the law and use the betamax decision to say that it's like timeshifting a TV program, because you're making a physical copy from the airwaves, and that was permitted in law despite what the original copyright holder may have wanted or intended.

It's going to get messy and take years.
