The writer says, "Internal Anthropic documents about its plan to scan millions of books, revealed in the copyright lawsuit, don’t make clear why the company wanted to destroy the books in the process."

I don't think it's been established that the company "wanted to destroy the books in the process." Some scanning processes are destructive; others are not--as the writer says next. But, "want"?

25 @14/m: They're trying to avoid the copyright mess they're currently embroiled in (millions of books copied into the LLMs without paying for copies now resulting in them being sued for grand-scale copyright violation.) And since it's for a commercial purpose, that may result in criminal charges as well as being a civil tort.

Destroying the original (while preserving an image of the cover plus the purchase receipt) would prove that they did indeed purchase a copy of the material for their use, but destroying their copy (as is their right) lets them:

a) Avoid physical storage fees
b) Avoids them having two copies (the original and the digital copy they made without permission of the copyright holder.) They'll try to argue that the digital copy now takes the place of the physical one, since they only have "one copy" that they paid for.

And that's what any legal case in copyright law will hinge on. Is the act of reading a physical object in order to make a digital one, by itself, a violation of that copyright?

Remember that for computer software licenses, the license holder grants you the right to make that second copy in memory so the software can run, otherwise you couldn't legally run the software since there are now two copies (the one on the media, and the one in memory.)

The copyright holder has to grant you the license to make that second copy, otherwise you made a copy in violation of the copyright holder's rights.

The LLMs are going to try to argue they only have the one copy in memory now, but... the act of making the copy without being granted the right by the copyright holder is in itself a violation. There is no "book license" that grants that right.

So the LLMs are likely going to try to twist the law and use the betamax decision to say that it's like timeshifting a TV program, because you're making a physical copy from the airwaves, and that was permitted in law despite what the original copyright holder may have wanted or intended.

It's going to get messy and take years.

Isn't McCarthy's stuff like that? I was very disappointed with both the novel and the film version of No Country for Old Men. He has the protagonist, the guy played by Josh Brolin, doing battle with Chigurh the killer, and he's doing pretty well . . . and then suddenly Chigurh kills him, and we don't get to see it. No, the protagonist doesn't need to win or live in the end, but we need to see the payoff.

I would recommend that "AI Companies" buy up sermons delivered by the men a century around the founding of this country. It was very often the case that a sermon would be delivered for whatever was going on.

Early Application Based Sermons. So those sermons will be loaded with theology, and something AI totally lacks: wisdom.

Imagine replacing the board of Wikipedia and the ID-10Ts of reddit with reformed theologians who were so respected their sermons have survive over the generations.

No Country for Old Men is pretty nihilistic. And McCarthy refuses to use quotation marks or anything at all (like that Euro introductory dash) to set off teh speeches of his characters. Reading his stuff is pretty claustrophobic for me.

Anime Matsuri in Houston kicks off Friday. Vic Mignogna will be there, voice of Edward Elric, and Maxey Whitehead, voice of Alphonse Elric, was announced to be there.

Anime Matsuri advertised it as a reunion between the two voice actors. Maxey has elected to not attend after going on social media to say the announcement violates her contract.

Vic has been embroiled in #MeToo accusations by other voice actors like Monica Rial of being a PDF.* This basically destroyed his voice acting career as Funimation fired him.

I think Anime Matsuri could have avoided this controversy by merely saying the two voice actors would be there and not hype it as a reunion. *shrugs*

*Speaking as someone who has interacted with Vic at conventions a couple times before the accusations were aired, these accusations were an easy victory for the likes of Monica Rial because Vic is a very tactile person who loves to give his fans hugs and big ol goofy smiles.

As is another I have, with dates of 1973, 1978 and 1984.
Both bought on recommendation by people who should have known better.

Something just seemed off about them so I stuck with what I'd had since high school. Some time back I learned about the who and what was behind them.
"Something just seemed off" doesn't come close to how bad...
