Where did we get the phrase "in the doghouse"
People have conflicting theories.

Literal Origins: The Doghouse as a Symbol of Disfavor

The term “doghouse” has been part of the English language since at least the mid-1500s, referring to a shelter for dogs. In the late 19th century, the term evolved to describe the backyard structure for a single dog. The figurative use of “in the doghouse,” meaning to be in temporary disgrace, emerged by 1932.

Earliest Printed Record: Winsor McCay’s Comic Strip

The earliest known printed use of “in the doghouse” in its idiomatic sense appears in Winsor McCay’s comic strip Dream of the Rarebit Fiend between 1904 and 1905. This predates the 1926 glossary Criminalese by J.J. Finerty, which defines “in dog house” as “in disfavor.

Maritime Theory: Sailors’ Punishment Quarters

Another theory suggests that the idiom originated in the 19th century when sailors slept in small huts on a ship’s deck, referred to as “dog houses.” Punished sailors were made to sleep in these cramped, uncomfortable spaces, leading to the association of “being in the doghouse” with being in trouble.

When I was working in the patch, my dog Pogo would climb all the stairs to the doghouse at mealtimes, and mooch off the crew. I don't normally like toffee, but I knew a woman who would make homemade chocolate covered toffee for Christmas gifts. It was incredible, you could tell that it was made with real butter. 160 Went through Medicine Bow National Forest today. The mountains were covered in clouds and we were level with the clouds for a bit, which Pookette thought was cool.

We got lost due to construction in Laramie trying to find their Chick-fil-A, and wound up on the campus of the University of Wyoming. We saw mule deer grazing on their practice football field, haha! We also saw the nicest parking garage I've ever seen on the edge of campus. It almost looked like a castle made of sandstone.

I think it might have been MP4 (and if it wasn't, apologies to him) who said that Snoopy was the downfall of "Peanuts." And I've come to agree with that.

"Peanuts" was about how flawed characters dealt with their flaws, and how they became real by doing so. While Charlie Brown never won at anything, but it never dented his determination to continue. While he would despair over his outcomes, he would never allow his failures to consume him.

Snoopy, on the other hand, was a perpetual winner who was never disappointed and was admired by all. He was the breakout character for the strip, and it's certainly understandable that Schulz would capitalize on him.

I just never liked Snoopy that much after realizing that. Sorry.

Actually, in a way they do. Most funds for public libraries come from county property taxes....which is a pet peave of mine. Public libraries should be all donations. I see it as something very similar to PBS and NPR. You could argue that it improves the quality of living in the area by offering potentially free education and resources. I would argue that it is a 1st world luxury.

Fire Companies is a non-starter. It is a public safety organization and a necessity. It is no different from a paved road in a philosophical sense.

Failed rift zone in the North American plate. Some argue that it is a dying fault, others do not. The huge amount of sediment in the Mississippi River Valley is what makes it so potent for destruction. Shakes like a bowl of jelly with liquefaction etc.

You can still see sand blows yards in diameters all through the Eastern part of Arkansas from the New Madrid fault. As a kid, I could remember occasionally farmers digging up logs of cypress that fell during the earthquakes and were buried under the muck after. Cypress is one of the few woods that does not rot much at all due to water exposure.

Three big quakes 1811-1812 that have been around mid 7.0's after changing their initial guesses at magnitude. A strong one in the late 1890's. Most recent was a 4 point something that I felt as a little kid living in NE Arkansas at the time. Centered on Marked Tree Arkansas.

Lots of smaller ones mostly unfelt and deep with a few reminding people now and again a fault is sleeping there.

My university library for my doctorate had a piece of shit 'homeless' person decide to torch it by lighting off papers in government documents section. Massive fire and smoke damage--fortunately I already had my dissertation data and references when it happened.

Most urban libraries have significant problems with mentally ill, homeless, and perverts using the libraries for their rest and recreation.

The US is not as it was in a helluva lot of places.

That's in NC, right? I once briefly had a long distance romance with a Tar Heel Frat boy from UNC. Met him at Mardi Gras in college one spring trip to NOLA. He was smitten with this redneck and wrote me at the dorm and called sometimes (shared payphone). As I never dated it encouraged the dorm that I was not totally weird.

He showed up on our farm one day and alarmed my mother, then went to the college (junior college convent across the street from my HS). He found out pretty quickly after dinner than I was a good girl and he was a gentleman about it. I don't know why he thought otherwise. Who traveled far for basically not a lot with a friend (who apparently scored with someone I knew. I was oblivious to everything that she was a loose girl).

Anyway, it will take airtravel to NC but I'll be there! My husband will be confused but I'll bring him as well! "Honey, we have to fly to NC tomorrow," and try explaining Morons. But once he figures out why he'll be in and approve. (I can talk him into anything). XXXX

At a library near the med center I was once chased out of the loo by a troll woman lunatic. Before it got REALLY bad with homeless. It was her home, she said. I then went to the beach town library and, once, had a bedbug in the pocket of a book (identified by my husband). Then I debated microwaving the books due to potential bugs, but put them on the dash in the sun instead (FL...hot).

Now I order from Amazon and my husband frets over a bookcase in our bedroom about once a year as "it was not built for all these books...that I have not read." I tell him it will be fine.

I have a pervy library story! A former co-worker of my dude's had a deal of placing his "member" in a slot after removing a book. The books faced each other and lady on the other side would have a surprise! His wife divorced him and I think he moved to Texas.

I was shocked then laughed wildly when he told me this. I know I am going to hell, but try to be good.

Pretty much and now most of the milk chocolate is now emulsified vegetable oil. Literally flexible Hershey bars. Reese's descendant called out Reeses over their substituting vile concoctions for cocoa butter in their chocolate.

Now all of chocolate tastes like stale Easter Bunny and other such obnoxious 'treats' did.

But, there is a funny bit by Jean Shepard in "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash". Same book that the Christmas Story came from. In it, Jean describes the delights and dangers of candy in the Depression. Funny guy he was.

I told my husband I would have beaten it with a book for his own surprise. Especially once he came to and realized I was married to a co-worker as he was hauled out with the EMT's and police.

From what I remember he was a tiny nerdy guy but his wife seemed fairly normal.

I also once worked with a perv pediatrician.Big group. Worked around baby son's kindergarten hours and weekends in the newborn nursery at the med center.

He'd left the practice and one day the nursery director told me he'd been arrested with a number of charges. I had to sit down and was wut? Attempted rape, kidnapping and guns.

I then remembered a few perv 0530 crank calls and knew the voice, as he said my name, but couldn't place it til then. He knew I'd answer the phone vs dude because that was when they'd call me off if they did not need me. Lawsie.

The calls stopped when I mentioned the calls at the ped office and having Bell South trace them. It was him!

He was arrested, in prison, his RN wife did not believe the charges until he tried to run over her with his car.
