Anyone ever get a traffic ticket in McBee, South Carolina? Not naive to think this kind of thing doesn't happen, but it is egregious in any time and place. Shows how badly things can go wrong when some people get access to power. Predators that abuse public positions of power deserve tar and feathers. At least roadside bandits don't pretend to uphold the public trust.

Multiple current and former members of the McBee Police Department turned themselves in to agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) on Monday morning in Chesterfield County.
One person who did not surrender Monday was former Officer Jerriell Wright. Wright contacted Queen City News Chief Investigative Reporter Jody Barr in December 2024, just three months after he was shot at 62 times in an ambush following a Sept. 19, 2024, traffic stop in town.
Wright provided months of text messages between himself, former Lt. Greg Block, and McBee Mayor Glenn Odom - messages that Wright said provided evidence that the mayor and former McBee Police Chief Mike Irvin implemented a 10 tickets per shift quota in the one-stoplight town.

Wright's messages also showed the mayor was critical of Block's lack of ticket production. To satisfy the mayor, Wright said McBee Town Councilman Robbie Liles and current MPD Chief Timmy Knight ordered him to help Block by taking time out of his shift to write tickets using Block's login credentials to access the state's computerized electronic ticketing system.
Wright had text messages to underpin a lot of what he alleged happened. His months of text chains with the mayor showed Glenn Odom's lust for traffic tickets and the $440 fine variety, according to Wright. The mayor, he said, was never satisfied, no matter how high his daily ticket totals climbed.

"Basically, he was saying I ran a red light, which I never passed through the red light. He said I was speeding... I never passed through the intersection," Jackson told me in a March 2026 interview at his jobsite in Longs, S.C. I showed Jackson the same photographs I showed every other person we contacted.
"I was explaining to him I never passed to the light. And he said, I'm not going to argue with you. I can impound your vehicle and take you into custody and stuff. So, I just let it be and kind of went on and took the tickets and paid the tickets," Jackson said.

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Uncanny Expeditions. Anders primarily devotes his channel to going as far as legally possible on public land to see activity in an around Area 51 and 52. He has traveled to locations around the Mojave and New Mexico as well. His journeys often attempt to debunk or resolve rumor and myth rather than amplify them.

He is not afraid to drive, hike and camp well off the beaten path. He researches the history of specific facilities to explain when they were built, how they developed and what they were used for. His approach is one of curiosity and tangible evidence. For example, rather than just reading about a crash location in a remote location, he travels to see what remains after the clean-up.

His videos often include glimpses of helicopters, fighter jets, Janet flights and even F-117 flights.

Yes, the "authorities" are very aware he exists.

His channel has over 206k subscribers and some of his videos attract over a million views. Some of the footage isn't dramatic but documents activity or lack of activity. It also illustrates just how vast and rugged the landscape is.

Accent is not as bad now but I used to have people stare at me like I was speaking a foreign language out West. Which was weird and I had to learn how to say my one syllable name correctly vs two syllables. Said it fast like I was chy knee. I'd be thinking, "Do I have something in my teeth? Why are they looking like that at me." I reached a point where I didn't care.

In a nutrition class in early nursing school regional food was mentioned. In the South, hominy represented and all heads turned to me. I informed them regally I had never had hominy (the puffy kind), while completely forgetting that that's where grits come from.

Possibly because I did not cook much at all. And the one time I did for a date I blew up the oven.

Hadn't seen them for years, either, but they started showing up a year or two ago in the local Dollar Tree. Had one, tasted ok. I mean, it wasn't Coke or Pepsi, but it was the go to when you didn't have the money for the others.

Not McBee, but a buddy of mine got a ticket in Deland, FL which apparently was also a famous ticket trap.

It was like 6:30am and I was in the office while he was in FL doing a delivery for us. We were on the phone going over the day's business plan, and all of a sudden he said: "Why is that guy waving at me?"

He got pulled over by a police officer ON FOOT....for going 21mph in a 15. It was a spendy mistake.

Back in 2008, an aunt of mine who lived in Alameda, CA, died and my mother flew out there.

First day, we stopped at some diner, and were going about our business when I realized a hush had descended across the whole place. Then it hit me, they were all listening to my mother and me talk. We were specimens.

The waitress kept coming over and asking me something, and finally just gushed "I love to hear you talk!"

Ian Anderson liked his codpiece and tights. I don't believe I have seen others in this outfit, so Morons should take notes for Halloween or the MoMe. His was fancy.

Our only interaction during this tour in the summer of 1975 was him glaring at me after he said something to the bass player. He came over to him, as he missed a cue or something looking at me, then shot angry lasers at me and pointed with his flute.

I did nothing to deserve this, standing on a chair in row 5 and right in the bass player's path. (He's the guy in the goofy zebra suit.) It was not like I flashed him or did anything but stand there.

The acoustic player met his future bride in the Jackson, MS airport gift shop. He said they could not undertand each other's English and she'd never heard of the band.

Wonderful concert, however. Sounded great live, very entertaining, as many of the bands in the mid-70's to '80's did. Great time! I still wish I had gone to the after party! Flew back to school out West the next day.

What you would or should find fascinating is when you hear British people imitating "Americans", they sound like they're imitating southerners - but it's often not southerners they're imitating at all. It's how twang-less "American" sounds to their proper English ear.

In other words the accent has drifted in a particular direction toward that twang. In yet other words, that is to say *you* have a twang, you just don't know it.

My CA19-9 numbers are staying steady, well below what is considered the threshold for active disease. Had to get an iron infusion today, which I was not expecting, but that's okay - we leave on Sunday for 10 days to visit the grandsons, so the extra energy will help!

Unfortunately, the protocol with the pump includes prednisone (which they say should be metabolized quickly without affecting the rest of the body), and I have gained back 40 of the 100 pounds that I had lost since going on Mounjaro in 2022. I look like I have swallowed a basketball....😭😭😭

It's axiomatic that the British find Southern accents easier than midwestern ones and the reason is that the vowels are so inconsistent. Midwesterners have a strong Germanic influence but it is uneven. I find it very easy to slide into a Southern accent and when I was in the Army, I picked it up without thinking about it, much to the amusement of my girlfiend (the future Mrs. Lloyd).

Southerners have the most delightful turns of phrase, quite the contrast with the more Germanic directness of Northerners.

Have told this one. Did not know to light the pilot light, being from an electric home and not cooking or paying attention. I was heating bread for my chicken cacciatore, one of the few meals I could cook as my grad school male roommates made me learn the year prior.

The oven door flew open with a BANG, singed my long hair on one side. I went deaf, in shock, smelled burning hair. I had a hematoma on my thigh that I did't notice til later that night from the door.

The college guy asked wth was that? I was lip reading at this point,frozen with wooden spoon. He turned all the gas off and gave me a beer. We abandoned the meal as asbestos fell into it from the ceiling of post WWII apt. Sat in silence on the sofa for an hour and he left. I assume he said goodbye. I saw him years later after we married others at a hockey game and he waved and smiled at me.

I did not cook for my husband til we married, playing it safe.

Brit actors can indeed do them well. One Brit actress was on Letterman or one of them back in the '90s or so. Host asked her to "do a Southern accent".

She looked puzzled and said, "which one?" Which produced puzzlement from the host. She went through and flawlessly did quite a few different ones.

Long Island husband now says he's fixin' to do stuff. He's Southern at heart and loves my family.

My accent gets worse if I am on the phone with my mother, or home, or have had more than two glasses of wine or drinkies.

Culture shock was his family coming to our garden wedding in MS from the NE. Plus they were Catholic and my family Presbyterian. Added to the stress for me for the wedding and my voice was a few octaves higher than normal when we said our vows (I was shocked over my voice and my eyes got big). Otherwise it all was wonderful and a beautiful day. No civil or religious wars.

We did have a deal that the wedding kiss would be a little peck and done. He decided otherwise and I was not happy. I could hear my father snickering behind us as my groom laid one on me.

There is an accent map of the US that's quite interesting. Big then you can zoom in on.

There was a linguist who spoke at Furman one time many moons ago, and my mother went to hear him with some of her friends. He was a quite cunning linguist, and could identify were you born within miles (resolution decreasing as you went west, though). Or, at least where you first learned to speak.

They'd try to fool with a put-on accent, which he'd see right through, and correctly identify their real accent through the botched fake accent.

Thanks! He, at least, did not run out the door, but turned off the gas and removed me from the galley kitchen of that ghetto apt. I'm sure he was deaf, too. It was LOUD.

I think if I had been bending over it would have been lights out based on the hematoma on my thigh I found later. I did not feel that pain at all from the adrenaline for hours.

It was a fourplex. The college girl I knew two doors down asked me the next day if I "felt the earthquake." I told her that was just me trying to cook.

Then her grandfather died. He was a WW II vet. As soon as I heard about it, I contacted the funeral home about his benefits, and of course the family had done nothing, so I gave direction about how to get the paperwork.

We drove down and at the viewing I was treated with cold hostility. The next day they held the burial and I dutifully put on my dress uniform and played "Taps" over his grave, and suddenly I was a member of the family in good standing.

I worked with a guy back in the 70s who had worked as a cat handler at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and had moonlighted with the people who owned that cougar. He had tales.
The cat's name was Chauncy, and he was a ham and a prima donna. He would only do one take. They could rehearse him multiple times, but when he saw the camera, once through and that was it. He said the cat was a dream to work with, very seldom got pissy, and would act, mainly, like a big, loveable housecat, but... He said, once, the cat was laying down, sort of napping, and some gofer came over to the owners to deliver a message. He stood right in front of the cat's nose and started talking really fast and loud. That pissed off the cat, who the reached out a paw and whacked the guys legs out from under him. The guy goes on his ass and looks up at the cat, standing and staring at him. Piddled in his pants scrambling backwards.

225 Christy - your Nat gas story reminds me of a Boy Scout outing many years ago. We were in northern Arizona, had done a hike and had permission to stay in a big old cabin deep in the woods. (When I say big, it slept 20 of us without being very crowded). Had an old kitchen with this giant ranch style double oven/range that was probably from the 20’s.

So Sunday morning, we’re cooking eggs and pancakes on top of this huge old iron stove. One of the younger kids flipped the oven handle on, not knowing what it was. I was on the other side of the room and looked over just as there was a huge bang, all the doors flew open, and this sheet of flame came out of that oven and rose until it kissed the ceiling. Much wailing and upsetness followed, although us older boys thought it was pretty cool.

The adult leaders had to do some fancy explaining as to why so many of the boys came back with their eyebrows badly singed.

My husband grew up in the South. He went to law school and i can't tell you how many cases he won.

He said his accent had a lot to do with him winning so many cases because so many people did not prepare their cases very well because they assumed he was stupid.

Accent variation is declining. Mobility and mass communication are just pushing us all toward some mongrel mess.

For example, take SC here. Here in the Upstate, the NE corner, from that accent map, you'll see we're in the broad "inland South" part, while the rest of the state was in the "lowland South". A lot of r-dropping there.

But that r dropping is rapidly dying out in modern times.

My father adored my groom. They bonded over mocking me within 4hrs. I am his only daughter and they did not meet til 4 days before the wedding. My Marine father also never met any of the very few boys who took me to dances or concerts in HS and college. He told me he figured I could take care of myself decades later.

I became Catholic this past March on our 47th anniversary. I am not telling my 95yr old mother.

He had converted to PCA within 2yrs...his choice. Returned to Catholicism and I gradually did as well within a year (one son and family are now).

We had our vows convalidated because his uncle, a monseigneur from NYC, did not sign something. He had a prayer and my parents pastor said the vows in the garden wedding.

So I've been married twice to the same guy! He still likes me!

Back in high school, I had a job for awhile, as a "soda jerk" in a drugstore. The fountain drinks were mixed at the spigot. A "coke" was Coca-Cola syrup, mixed with soda water. You could request, for an additional nickle above the standard price of a dime, the addition of other flavoring to the 12 oz glass. Vanilla and cherry syrup that were used for Sundaes were the standards - a vanilla coke or a cherry coke were not unusual requests.
Dr Pepper is a cherry coke, using very, very artificial "cherry" syrup.

I believe what we all have is a drawl. I used to read British stories in which Americans were "drawling," and I didn't get it -- UNTIL I worked among a bunch of Brits in a newsroom. I could barely understand them at times because of the way they clipped their vowels. I realized, I rely on vowel sounds for listening comprehension. When every vowel gets cut off before you give it a chance, it limits comprehension.

Some phrases came from my son, who had an odd grasp of English as a child. We still use "nakkims" at the dinner table, and of course there are "callerpiters" in the garden, and if you say "toot toot" the answer is "butter!" That one is from a song with a lot more words than that, but those are the only ones that got through.

Potatoes, particularly baked potatoes, are known as "mantatoes," and of course you can eat them with your hands when camping.

And the guy who drives a train? Menductor.

I expect a lot of people would have trouble understanding us at all.

American accents are mostly memories of various regional English dialects. I was lucky enough to visit England a few years back when it was still fun, and I found the London accent nearly incomprehensible. However, the accent around York and Yorkshire sounded like a slightly different American accent that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Very easy on the ears.

264 Homogenization of accents is indeed a tragedy, but probably inevitable. Still greatly enjoy the rare occasions when I still encounter a real one (American regional).

And I wonder about the UK and the same topic. About 10 years ago we went to the first Blue Angels show of the season in early March out in El Centro, as we did for years. Back then one of the nice features of that small event were the NATO aircraft and crews that you rarely see at airshows. There because of the training ranges they use in AZ and NM.

There were two British Apache helicopters. We talked with a pilot of one - clean nice Oxbridge English. Then we talked to his crew chief. I got about 25% of what he said, the wife (non-native English speaker) got nothing. Some very strong regional/class accent I'd never heard. So there appear to still be pockets surviving.

Vocal reminds me of an aristocratic English villain. Up-talk gives me the impression the speaker is uncertain about everything she is saying. For many years my father worked with, and business-partnered with a Brit from Slough, England. Guy named Bert, and a real fine person. So I got long exposure to the Slough accent. Years later, I met another Brit whose accent sounded similar to me. I asked him, "are you from Slough?" "No, about 15 miles south of there."

I read somewhere that when transplants 'lose' their accent, they're speaking through the musical center of the brain, essentially 'singing' their words in a way. Which is why it comes roaring back under strong emotion: they're just speaking through the language center, which never changed.

I think there's commonly a connection between stand-up comics and musical ability, for that reason. Even when they're not mimicking accents, a lot of what they do is performing a specific attitude or feeling, and a text-to-speech program would not get the same effect at all. So I think it's more like birdsong than lecture.

Also my mother didn’t want to sound “southern” probably due to a conflict with her mother (that grandmother had a strong east Texas accent). The result being I sound like an American broadcaster. "math" vs "maths". Punchline first: that " s" is an abomination.
The word mathematic is an adjective.
The word mathematics is a noun.
The word math is an abbreviation of mathematics, abbreviated by eliminating everything after the "h". You don't get to throw out everything, then just grab the " s" and stick it on the end. When the word is used it's used as a noun.
If "maths" was an actual word, it would be a plural of an adjective, which is silly.
Therefore, the proper word is math, dammit!
Now, how did we wind up with people actually writing the word maths?
ESL. American STEM has been taken over by foreign students, almost all of which have ESL English. The first place I ever heard it, and for a long time thereafter, was from the mouths of non-native speakers. I assume that this was the way they were taught in their native land. You can't be surprised that a bunch of foreign nerds missed the subtleties of a singular (mostly) noun having a "s" on the end and that the non-s version isn't a noun. So, adding the "s" seems ok.

Well, having Grok go over this, it's a bit more "nuanced" than that. It's not the 's' suffix alone, but "-ics", which ultimately came from the Ancient Greek Homo "-ikos", meaning "pertaining to". There was a plural form, "-ika".

That became "-ica" in Latin, and got into English as "-ic" in the 16th century, as and adjectival form. "-ics" thus became the noun form.

An ageless question. My take is that tequila lends itself to fast drinking. If you want to feel it and quickly, then shots are the way. No mixers, no sipping. And there are crappy tequilas and sipping tequilas, but as long as you avoid the well ones or the expensive ones, you're set for a good shooter, that actually has some flavor but will go down smooth.

I haven't spent enough time in bars recently to comment on present day economics, but back then, beer was the superior choice, economically. A 12 oz beer at 6.5% ABV for 25¢ delivers about 0.78 oz of C2H5OH, vs a 1.5 oz shot of 80 proof Seagrams 7 for 50¢ only giving 0.6 oz of ethanol. 30% more at half the price w/beer.

Ordered it from a'zon some years ago, don't know if similar is even available anymore. It's 4G, so probably good enough for a while yet. (?)

TracFone doesn't exist in Canada. We have about the world's most expensive cellular service, and it is an oligopoly. I am using my old flip phone a Plum Ram, which is a ruggedized flip phone. But it cannot do internet browsing, and texting is a royal pain. I got the Titan pocket, which had a physical keyboard like my old Blackberry, which was a good phone. BUt it always had quirky behavior, and would default to some weird settings.

Get a plan that allows the phone to act as a hotspot (the phone does it, but Verizon wants extra $ to enable it) and use an Android tablet when you need something other than text or voice. The only disadvantage that I've encountered is that most tablets don't include the accelerometers and high precision GPS that fancy phones do, which makes them useless for some apps.

I went for a quick 20-minute walk, and while I was out, realized that there are two paths to the same correlation. One is the obvious: drink faster, get looser, and be more inclined to fighting from artificial stupidity.

There other is the two sharing a common cause, which could be the case with young country boys. Higher muscle mass means it takes more booze get the same effect, so they drink faster just to feel something. And, it also means higher testosterone. So, the faster drinking (and tequila preference) and being feisty could spring from the same source, rather than one causing the other.

I have a Ting account, and SIM card, for when I am in the USA. Same phone, just switch providers. Many phones now support dual SIMS. I used to just swap out the SIMS, too. A busy month, and my Ting bill is about 20 dollars. $6/month keeps it active. Roaming charges on my Canadian phone could run six bucks for one damned call.

As long as they are on different carriers networks, you have a real backup. If they aren't you're only protected from a bad phone, not network issues.
This is a real.problem with MVNOs. For instance, both Consumer Cellular and Pure Talk run over AT&Ts network. Mint, OTOH, is on T-Mobile. If you're not aware of these factors, you may have a false sense of security.

Yes, and it's quite slick, and the transmission line equations can show it, and you don't need full 3D field theory.

Take a simple DC circuit, battery, with a switch feeding a two wire line. Close the switch. A voltage and current wave pulse moves down the line at light speed (well, something close, LC product that would be c for the vacuum). The magnitude of that current pulse is just V/Z, where Z is the characteristic impedance.

If there is no load at the end of the wire, just an open circuit, there is a reflected wave that bounces back toward the source, also at c. That just cancels the current, and the steady state is I = 0.

If the load is exactly equal to Z, no reflected wave, and the same current flows steady state. If less than Z, the reflected wave makes more current flow. It's a very cool thing.
