The families of two men who discovered through DNA tests that they were switched at birth 38 years ago are accusing a North Dakota hospital of robbing them of the lives they were supposed to lead. Kyle Bylin discovered his birth family after taking an at-home test he chose randomly during a Christmas gift-exchange. That led to his biological aunt on a genealogy platform. Her nephew, Jeremy Morrison, then had his DNA tested. We've watched the first half of Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence based on a 1920 Edith Wharton novel. The mind reels at the thought of how Marty came to direct this when he is best known for gangster epics and "tough" films, but I'll say it's beautiful and well-lit (a rarity for modern movies). It's not fast-paced, it's not Die Hard, but it is well-acted.
The local CBS outlet's website lists our chance of rain tomorrow at 40%, but no real change in temps -- still 80-something overnight and 95 in the daytime -- though winds tomorrow are supposed to be from the north instead of the eternal southern ones. I doubt we are going to have any kind of storm disaster tomorrow.

Some folks showed up in two vehicles and set up shop, tents and such, within a stones throw. I don’t get it. It’s not illegal or anything. I don’t really care too much, but I don’t understand why anyone would do this. It’s not super common, but I’ve had it happen enough times to really question “what the fuck is wrong with you?” It’s not a one off.

When I lived up there we were the only state that held out and refused to recognize MLK day as a national holiday. For a few months every time someone from NH would have to drive to another state, like clockwork someone would see the NH plate and scratch the entire side of the car with their keys. Never failed. Happened to me at least six times in different states.

Most of the top triples hitters were lefty batters. Rickey hit righty and was a dead-pull line drive hitter. You get many more triples hitting to the right field corner than the left because the throw from the outfield is so much longer.

Sooo....this is gonna sound weird, but I am looking for "validation" on something rather silly.
Does anyone remember the joke about the guy who was caught in a flood and several people came by to offer him a way off of his roof? He kept turning them away, saying, "God will provide". He ended up drowning, got to Heaven, God asked him why he was there, guy said, "I trusted you to get me out of there", and God told him, "I sent you a boat, a plane, etc."?
A couple of weeks ago I got a card in the mail telling me it was time to schedule my "routine" colonoscopy. I called the office, only to be told that since I had one done in November, 2024 (when getting Cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis), and since it said I didn't need to come back for 5 years, to just disregard that notification, as it was a technical oversight. I said okay, but then I mentioned it to my oncologist, thinking maybe the notification was a "sign" that something is going on inside my body (I feel fine). He said not to worry about it, so I left it at that. (Continued)

Yesterday, I received a phone call from the same office, telling me that I needed to schedule a colonoscopy. I thought that maybe my oncologist had decided to see what was going on. Turns out that nope, just someone not reading the notes from my recent phone call, doing routine diligence. Was told to ignore the phone call and come back in 2029 for my next colonoscopy.
So both of these were just "accounting" errors, but I can't help but think/feel as if maybe they are a "sign" (I don't usually believe in that sort of stuff) that God/the Universe is telling me that even though I don't have any symptoms, perhaps I need to get this checked out, just in case. I mean, I already have cancer; it is a very aggressive one that can metastasize into other parts of the body. If caught early it could be easily taken care of, rather than a year or two down the line, when it would be much more difficult to treat/deal with. (Continued)

What do you guys think? Am I crazy, or should I push to have a colonoscopy done? I don't know if insurance would pay for it, or how to approach my oncologist to request one for me - I don't think "the patient has a feeling about this" is going to fly as a justification to have one done.

One of the widows I walk with cooked bluebell's chicken recipe from the Deplorable Cookbook. That was after I use the FIFA final as an excuse to visit her and chat.
She got the cookbook, one of many she owns, as a gift for getting me to and from the local airport and the NoVaMoMeet. bluebell inscribed it.
She is a skilled cook, and has profound man management skills to choose that cookbook and recipe. Still walking, not stalking. She is on the prowl, however. Dodging is getting more difficult.
We are trusting friends.

My great-uncle was a very good looking and (so I heard and saw photos) charming man. He died very young but got around as 3 women with engagement rings showed up at his funeral at the same time. He was a train conductor in the South, with a port in every storm.
His father, my great-grandfather, was also a very handsome man. I have seen photos. His wife, Maggie, threw all of his clothing and belongings in the front yard and left him when she found a note from a lady friend in his jacket pocket in 1913. Five kids, the eldest was my grandmother, who took Maggie and siblings in to her home as a newlywed.
Maggie and husband never divorced. Everyone (including my father and aunt) thought she was a widow til he died in Louisiana after marrying again and having another daughter. My grandmother refused to go to his funeral, which was enlightening to my father and aunt.
There are family there who learned of us legals due to my mother doing genealogy and family trees. Surprise!

Our second and third were twin boys. Born in a hospital, only ten minutes apart. Fraternals, they were and still are about as different as two brothers can be. The first of the two born was whisked away by the delivery room staff, and I was busy staying with Milady until the second was born, so it was not as warm and cuddly as our firstborn.
There was a brief time they were in the nursery, and I had to fret that they were properly tagged and identified. Years have convinced me they are both ours. But, still, there was that bit of concern about switching babies.

WOW! That's a long time for them to dick around. I retired three years ago and moved my 401(k) from The Standard, who managed the 401(k), to a rollover IRA at Vanguard. That took a couple of phone calls, a couple of signed forms, scanned and emailed back, and maybe a week or ten days total, from my first call to the money showing up at Vanguard.

The only real sign, I hope, is that medical bureaucracies' left hand don't know what their right hand is doing sometimes.

Fair enough.
I have been EXTREMELY fortunate that so far my cancer treatment has been relatively easy - very little nausea, and most of the side effects so far (knock on wood) have just been "annoying" (hair loss, nail issues, etc.).

I worked as a neonatal RN for seven years and, having two of my own, the ID bracelets are put on baby and Mama within minutes of hatching.
No one could have swapped my first 10lb boy anyway because he attracted crowds as the largest in the nursery (his grandmother said).
He also was a furious and scary baby with hunger and no one would have kept him but his real parents, as he was super loud from his first breath.
A former classmate of mine was assigned to him. My mother and I walked down to the nursery to get him after I napped, and he was missing. Because he was waking the other babies being furious my friend said, he was put in an isolation room one shift. This is how bad he was.
Now they have bracelets that will send an alarm if baby has left the floor to alert for kidnapping. Now, too, newborns spend their time in their mother's room til discharge.

What do you guys think? Am I crazy, or should I push to have a colonoscopy done? I don't know if insurance would pay for it, or how to approach my oncologist to request one for me - I don't think "the patient has a feeling about this" is going to fly as a justification to have one done.

I don't think you're crazy, given your history. Maybe talk to your oncologist and see if you can get some kind of waiver to have it done sooner than normal. Or, maybe try for the poop-in-the-box test. Not as accurate, but pretty good, no prep required, and almost certainly less expensive.

TInFW, I looked up the cancer you mentioned and wanted to pass on a cancer story. My parents had a wonderful woman help them for a couple of years before they passed away in 2005&2007. We stayed close and sometime around 2012 she was diagnosed with a rare stomach carcinoma that couldn’t be excised but I never found out what the exact cancer was. The doctor at MDA gave her about 6 months to live at the time. She passed away on Halloween of last year, 13 years later. Her daughter had called me in the morning and said that I better get to her house because she was fading. I made it in time to see her and while she couldn’t speak, she knew I was there. (Here comes the lump in the throat). One of the last things I told her was that her story would keep inspiring people. So I hope this inspires you, if even for a tiny bit.

Interesting. They've just discovered an atmosphere around a rocky, super-earth type planet for the first time. It's LHS 1140 b, about 48 ly away, orbiting a red dwarf in the habitable zone. They don't know what the atmosphere is, but detected it via seeing helium escape.
Surface gravity of the thing would be about 1.8g.

This planet could well be a cold eyeball planet.
That would be a cold configuration of a tidally locked planet. This thing orbits a small red dwarf, with a period of just 29 days. That's how close the habitable zones of these red dwarfs are, so the planet will almost certainly be tidally locked.
A cold eyeball would have a warm spot around the equator facing the star, with an ocean there, and the night side would be covered in ice, which would then transition to liquid in a ring surrounded the warm spot. It would thus look like an eyeball.
On the other end, there's the hot eyeball. Scorching hot on the light side, and maybe liquid water existing on the night side.

Yep, orthostatic hypotension big time. They have done extended duration high g human tests (of very healthy, fit specimens) in centrifuges.
IIRC, they've tolerated 1.5g for up to 7 days. In 2G, however 24 hr is about the limit. Severe cardiovascular problems will developed. In the 1.5g case, fluid imbalances still become a big problem, but the ticker doesn't get too fatigued.

A problem with those centrifuges is the Coriolis effect. That will scramble the vestibular system like crazy when you move around. That makes it tricky to separate out the pure g effect vs the Coriolis.
One thing is to not move your head relative to your body. Moving your head with high Coriolis acceleration present causes a "cross coupling" of the those fluid thingies between each ear. The result will be much puking, as your brain can't make sense of that input.

About 1 RPM is the "normal limit" for Coriolis. Just about everybody could handle that straight in. 1 - 2 RPM and some adjustment period is required, but your brain would get used to it for most people.
Now, 2 - 4, some people can adapt, but they have to modify how they mover. Above 4, and it's puke city all the time.
You can figure out how big a radius you need for 1g at 1RPM. It's YUGE.

Problems with some spinning centrifugal gravity spaceship/station go far beyond mere problems for humans with the Coriolis.
Balance, intermediate axis theorem and all that abound. As mass shifted around (moving people cargo, etc), you could easily get thing out of balance and start tumbling. You'd need one hell of a control system to actively compensate. Some ideas were using some very dense fluid that would be pumped around to maintain balance, and that would be a major engineering thing indeed.

Now, you've got a carefully balanced spinning habitat around it's moment of max inertia. You start getting mass oscillations around the structure. They hit some resonance. The moment of inertia tensor starts shaking around, and so does your spin axis. It's not damped, but gets worse and worse.

I'm recalling some rotating systems stuff from way back in a Mechanics course at Clempson Cow Collidge.
Imagine you have a rotating disk. Now start putting various mass-spring oscillators on it, and let 'em fly. Mass moves around. Inertia tensor changes with time. They had a contraption so you could actually see motion like this. A thing with a 3-axis gimbal. Still under gravity, and not like it would be in free space, but it was designed to produce the full complexity.
You wouldn't believe the crazy motion that thing would do. Bob and weave, speed up, slow down.
Such systems will easily get chaotic. That was far, far beyond the level of undergrad mechanics, believe me. The contraption was not chaotic, as it was designed not to be, but still show just how complex such motion can be.

Take two of those chaotic pendula that are identical. Start them at the same position. The motion of each will be entirely different, even though they (*seem*) to start with the exact same initial conditions. That's chaos.
The truth is no matter how identical they appear to be, they aren't really down to some very small decimal point. And likewise, when you start them at the same position, same initial conditions, you don't exactly, at some very small decimal point level.

Yeah, I didn't realize that until recently. I've been blessed with a largely pain-free life, so when my right shoulder hurt, I ignored it. It spread and got worse, the whole arm from fingertips to shoulder blade, couldn't sleep but in fits and starts. Finally just took some buffered aspirin at the amount indicated on the package, and after a few days of not having to fight the pain too, whatever it was healed up and the pain was gone. I vowed to try to remember to not "tough it out" unnecessarily next time.
