“If Iran is off the table, Hezbollah can’t be funded, Hamas can’t be funded, the Houthis can’t be funded.” America and its allies were also referred to as the “Axis of Epstein” and “The Fourth Reich” - OMG! My favorite part of today was driving on our way to the Virginia Cascades. It's a one-way road, so the pine trees were close and we had the windows down. Ahhhh, my favorite smell!

Younger son reported in after a cruise with a friend of his and his family. Our grands go to Mass and to eat in nice restaurants from 2wks of age, are socialized, eat normally and are wonderful.
The two children of their friends are supposedly being raised by an elderly Puerto Rican nanny and scream a lot. The two year old screamed not to sit in a high chair the last dinner and ran around to other's tables with the proud parents thinking it was cute. The 4yr old wet her pants a few times and almost pooped in a pool and starts PreK4 this September and 2yr old in daycare (this is after retiring the elderly nanny who apparently did nothing). I pity their teachers. Son said he came close to taking a nerve pill as they got off the ship because of the screaming. The guy is a good guy and sadly married a princess who whines a lot. If I remember correctly I told son this might not be a good idea last spring, but that was all (they've vacationed with them in the past with other issues). Sometimes Mama knows best. He travels a lot and they've been on many cruises and this was only enjoyed by kids apparently. The 10mo old girl likes Fleetwood Mac is the only thing positive. Our youngest son turned 1yr, bro 3yr, cousin boys 2yr and 4yrs. My eldest son bit his eldest cousin's arm for not sharing his pedal tractor. This in turn started the downward spiral as my SIL went loco about it (like my son was a biter when this was his first, and apparently he was ticked off). They came for 10 long days. We did DisneyWorld, beaches, and BIL and I drank beer during naptime, which ticked off SIL as we were having too much fun (she was invited as well but had headaches). Then her son got strep throat and she whined about that as they all got sick day after day. The last night my husband was making scallops and I did not know they were in a collander in the sink when my baby, who was going to harf due to the cousin cold birthday gift, did it on the scallops. Three of us adults laughed and got pizza. SIL insisted on leaving a day early. The End. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at July 20, 2026 11:53 PM (hzuYO) 240

Unfortunately, the exhaust wash from the ascent engine blew over the flag they set there at Tranquility Base. Aldrin reported seeing it fall over. They did not make that mistake again, and set the flag farther away on subsequent missions. Also, Neil and Buzz had a little trouble and couldn't get the pole deep enough -- there was some hard pan of sorts right at the spot. Detailed analysis of the photos of the landing sites from the LRO has confirmed the Apollo 12, 16, and 17 flags are still standing, but Apollo 14 and 15 can't be determined. The flags weren't not made of any special material to withstand the solar wind and radiation environment, so they are most likely bleached out white by now. At one point the Habsburg authorities required that the Jews take European-style surnames. Before that they mostly went by patronymics like Shmuel bar Avram and so on (which of course the Euros themselves had done at one time... Johnson, Williamson...).
Some officials took inordinate pleasure in assigning them comical and/or belittling family names, for example "Goldfisch" (Shmuel Goldfisch changed his name to Samuel Goldwyn once he hit Hollywood). Occasionally you could bribe the official to give you a better name. Avi bar Yakov comes back from getting his new family name. His friend Moishe asks "What did you get?" "Schweiss". "Schweiss? That's a stupid name. Couldn't you bribe him to get something better?" "It cost everything I had just to get the 'w'". Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at July 21, 2026 12:45 AM (IG3/x) 306

Sad to say, virtually all of us of European ancestry are descended from rapists.
A bunch of steppe tribes that we call the Yamnaya overran Europe somewhere around 4,500–5,000 years ago. Yamnaya comes from a Russian word for "pit", and refers to their characteristic pit burials -- we don't know what they called themselves. This resulted in massive replacement of the indigenous European male DNA with Yamanaya male DNA, while the European female DNA continued on. I'd say "guess what happened there", but we know what happened there, don't we? The men got whacked and the women became sex slaves/concubines/what have you. One of those things that's not pleasant to think about. I suspect that there's an awful lot of Russian DNA in today's Germans, dating from 1945 or thereabouts, and an awful lot of Japanese DNA in today's Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, Indonesians... Our modern concept of body autonomy didn't really arrive until the advent of Christianity, e.g. the idea that raping a woman was an offense against her personally. Before that there were punishments for rape, but most of the jurisprudence seems to be based on compensation for damaging another man's property. Posted by: mikeski at July 21, 2026 02:05 AM (VHUov) Heh. I have used a Suburban or other vehicle on several occasions to provide a block to the base of a ladder, so it doesn't kick out at the bottom while I am on it. I am leery of ladders. This "stocking ladder" I have is really a metal staircase on wheels. I think it might have been an airplane boarding ladder in a previous life, but it is quite similar to those rolling staircases you see in big box stores like Home Depot. It has proven useful. Feels much more secure than an extension ladder. Problem with the barn site is the ground is dirt, and not level. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 21, 2026 02:11 AM (1z8ji) 383

Today (or 'today'), Monday the 20th, Stone Gossard turned 60, and Chris Cornell would've turned 62 if not for having hung himself on May 18, 2017. Gossard is a rhythm guitarist, composer, and founding member of Temple Of The Dog and Pearl Jam, among others, while Cornell was the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, primary lyricist, and composer for Temple Of The Dog, Soundgarden, and Audioslave.
Since they had a project in common, here's a track that Gossard wrote the music for and played rhythm guitar on, while Cornell wrote the lyrics and sang lead. They are joined by Gossard's future Pearl Jam bandmates Jeff Ament on bass guitar, Mike McCready on lead guitar, Matt Cameron on drums, and Eddie Vedder doing such discreet background vocals that I can't tell it's him. Temple Of The Dog - Four Walled World (Audio) https://youtu.be/pUbl2pt11og For context, TOTD was formed in reaction to the untimely heroin overdose death of singer Andrew Wood, who was Cornell's roommate and the frontman of Mother Love Bone with Gossard and Ament. Family stuff. And then the "who gets first choice of what" lists... *sigh* And so it goes. Posted by: JQ at July 21, 2026 04:03 AM (rdVOm) Posted by: m at July 21, 2026 04:16 AM (faghi) 424
