Got a renewed laptop coming in today. Nothing fancy. Just a Dell business laptop. I'll put Linux Mint on it as soon as it shows up. I think it has Win11 on it, but I didn't buy it for Windows. I was going to put Linux on it. I'm used to have 3 laptops. The ancient HP laptop finally gave up the ghost. The HD was making 'I'm going to die soon noises' anyway. I think the fan inside died too. First world problems. My Apple MacBook is my everyday machine anyway.

It seems like the exact same mechanism that's making things like hospitals and colleges and cars wildly overpriced, and yet with precious little state interference. Millions (billions?) of people effectively buying up memory in the form of distributed/cloud computing demand, with Other People's Money, and not even being aware they're doing it.

The Base OS on a Mac is Unix/Linux, so unless you have a very specific need for a Linux like operating system you could have saved money on a laptop, because you already have one.

Also of note, a Mac running parallels offers the best Windows experience if one is into that sort of thing.

In addition, you could use parallels to install any number of Linux VMs.

I have a number of different Linux vms on my MacBook in addition to my Windows 11 vm.

"Fetch" is not too unusual; I've known several cats who did it, including the late Tatiana the Wonder Siberian -- it was our regular game with a small rubber ball -- red tabby Arizona occasionally, and even Chekov D. Thanks. It's getting better and while I'm not the kind to fuss over things like this, I did email them a heads up that they need to adjust the temperature a bit.

I donate platelets every couple of weeks. My blood type is one of the ones that is very desirable for that. So I go in early Sunday morning, get hooked up to a machine and watch Netflix for about 1.5-2 hours. After that, I get some cookies and make my way home.

65 The trip to the Museum of Art was not bad. Most of the interesting stuff is on the first two of the three floors; the Japanese and other non-Western Hemisphere art is on the top floor. There were lots of Dutch paintings, including one of a bordello that really pops out because of the black-and-white checkered floor highlighted by the light from above in the painting. There was a Jackson Pollock that I believe we've had on the Art Thread, and some abstract work by a painter/photographer, Robert Gowdy, who apparently was well known here in the '60s-'80s, before his death from AIDS in '86.

67 There's lighter versions of Qwen available. I've downloaded and used it before. I bought a new but older tech laptop, and Acer which I really like a lot. It has an NVidia discrete GPU, not very powerful, but I can also run NVidia's Nemotron on that. It's a little slow, but it works. I can't read as fast as Grok, GPT, or Claude can type anyway. Slow is fine.

I used the local AI a few weeks ago to troubleshoot a wifi problem preventing me from getting on the internet. That was supe cool.

We go back for an ultrasound soon. I'm hoping everything will be normal, but there's a very good chance it won't be. Just waiting and praying. All I can do for now.

Many years ago we were at a show. The rings and the grooming area were in separate buildings. Possum was Best of Breed that day and before the Hound Group a Texas thunderstorm began.

Her Majesty had just gotten Possum groomed and asked me, "Would you mind carrying her over?" Possum was a big girl and not happy to be carried. Her Majesty thoughtfully held an umbrella... over Possum.

My wife and I were at a Greyhound event in Gettysburg with our boy Duncan. This lady went by us with her Italian Greyhound in a baby sling. Duncan stopped, looked at them and then looked at my wife as if to wonder why he wasn't being carried like that.

104 @100/fd: Agreed. Any HVAC company around here dumps the old cores/evaporators/compressors/copper lines into a dedicated dumpster that the metal scrap-yard comes and picks up.

Anyone showing up at a scrap yard with one or two AC units in a personal truck (that isn't HVAC branded) should have to produce their HVAC certification (each tech is personally certified), and their D.L. + CVOR. If they can't or won't, call the police.

As for the guy with his senior dog: True, sometimes you don't know how old your pet is if you adopt him later in his life. But at the first vet visit they should have given you some idea. Little Oreo the black-and-white part-Persian, I was told, was five, but when I took her in for a checkup the vet said she was older than that, maybe seven or eight. Since she lived another six years with me, that gave her a pretty good run on Earth. But I would never have expected her to play and frisk like a kitten.

Seriously annoyed. I think that after some reasonable length of time (5-10 years), journals should have to make articles open access. There's no reason to pay $50-60 for a PDF of something that was published 30 or 40 years ago.
