Six years ago a huge white rat with a brown spot showed up on our patio. We were gardening and our toddler grandson asked if he could pet it. We said wut, then NO!, and freaked out at the same time. It almost got into the house with us when we ran inside. Thankfully it did not or I'd have to burn the house down. A trapper guy came and we think fed it to his snake. It tried to bite him through leather gloves, so a mean one. Probably from a lab in chy na.

One aspect that would be super convenient, are things like ground Beef or steak. No refrigeration or freezing required, could be sold as shelf stable in mylar film packs. I know what i’d be bringing on those campouts and backpack trips. Holy smokes that would be awesome.
I read FDA (or whomever decides such things) considered allowing irradiated meats and similar years ago, but one consideration is the fact that high standards of cleanliness are maintained now (usually); and the concern is that this would all go to hell if beef producers were simply able to “zap” all the germs and filth away. Hm.
I think it’s legal for certain spices? Note to Karens - it does not cause food to be radioactive.

Those of us who have reached the age of 29 recall when Taco Bell used to top every taco with a sprinkling of green onions....That is until the great E-Coli outbreak across the country attributed to green onions. This was in 2006.
However, 3 years before that there was a Hepatitis A outbreak across the country. The ultimate cause was, you guessed it, green onions (from Mexico). Some restaurants such as Chi-Chi's never recovered from that one.

Reading about that hot staging Starship uses that is pretty risky and difficult, the reason is fuel efficiency. Elon is trying to squeeze every bit of that out he can.
With normal staging, you've got that coast phase between separation and then lighting the next stage. Gravity and some drag losses there. You can get 10% more payload with hot staging. Also, if you can use the fuel savings on the booster for the boost-back (if used), entry, and landing burns.
And it saves weight for the ullage motors needed on the next stages. And the control system for that.
So, difficult and risky, but doable. That's Elon.

INDIANAPOLIS — A food truck is no longer welcome to serve at a weekly Indianapolis market, all because of its slogan.
The debacle started last week when the State Personnel Department emailed Smash Daddy’s owner, Scott Sims. The email said employees received complaints over the truck’s slogan and therefore was revoking the truck’s participation in its last two selling slots of the season.
Sims has used the slogan “you’ll love our meat in your mouth” for the last two years with Smash Daddy’s and for about 15 years with his former restaurant, Between the Bun. While he’s fully aware the message could be taken in a couple of ways, he said it’s always been received well for the most part.

If you're still thinking about the horizon on the Apollo 8-balls, I was thinking about the best way to put that. It just happens to be the XY plane of however the IMY gyros were aligned at the time. This gave them a local reference for pitch, yaw, and roll relative to those given coordinates.
Think of it as just the current reference plane being used, not corresponding to anything real. The gyros would drift over the course of the missions, and they had to realign then via sighting stars.
When they did that, it was easiest to just let the current reference axes be what they were, and the star fix just figured out exactly how they were aligned relative to the master coordinate system being used for the mission. Which was something very similar to the current standard ECI frame.
You needed to point your engines and RCS in the right direction. The 8-balls just gave a local reference for that alignment.

New Hampshire thought this was hilarious and purposefully put up billboards right at the Vermont border on I-89. MRE entrees are retorts, cooked in the bag, basically. When they are “Fresh” the color and texture isn’t too bad. Some, not all, are quite tasty actually. The off flavor is mostly due to the quality of the ingredients, I expect. I don’t think irradiation is part of the routine. Maybe.
“Meat glue” means Beef Stew no longer uses stew meat, rather, “chunked and formed” scraps are molded together. Dinty Moore is the same. Hormel Chili w/beef is the same. Nasty!
I buy Bushes Chili beans - pintos, and cook my own beef or sausage. Not great but pretty decent for a quick nutritious meal.

Speaking of pathogens, I was reading some research they're doing on how pathogenic organisms would do with space travel, specifically Mars. While apparently all the organisms they're looking at it would survive Mars conditions for too long, the adaptations they appear to make in trying to survive might make then more pathogenic to humans.

So, I tried the same thing. Not as horrible as I remember it being. I think the normal 1/4oz dose still makes for a more-balanced cocktail. The triple-violette one isn't perfume, but it's too one-note. Though it is certainly more blue-colored.
A faint soap-like aftertaste too. I wonder if that's related to people who think cilantro tastes soapy. (I do.) That's a genetic thing, not an acquired-taste thing. Maybe similar chemicals in both plants.
Disclaimer: neither drink was really well-balanced. The lemon came through hard in both of them; I guess I grabbed a really sour lemon at the store.

The Great Influenza is the best book ever written on the topic, and the author did a lot of work hunting down evidence and timelines. He found the records of a rural doctor in backwoods Kansas who kept meticulous notes, and was writing about a strange new fatal illness he was starting to see about 6 months before the Ft Riley outbreak.
It was a uniquely perverse disease; it triggered a massive immune system overreaction, and this is what killed its victims. Which meant that those *most* likely to die were healthy adults in their 20’s and 30’s with strong immune systems - many died within 2 - 3 days of the first symptom.
And yet those who were old, and sick, or had compromised immune systems often survived.

Purposely infecting animals to see what promising mutations develop over many iterations, and infecting a different species, culling the most promising mutations. Accelerating rapidly this process, back and forth. Some viruses affect only humans, some only animals. But a new mutation or “novel” virus, humans have no natural immunity.
The 1918 virus was really nasty. Feel fine in the morning, sick by afternoon, dead by dinnertime. Hit young people really hard. It’s still around today, and you’ve undoubtedly had it, or been exposed, but it has weakened.

Biggest surprise so far is the Sidecar. Fresh lemons from the yard (meyers, not very tart, might be key) really make it refreshing as a summer sip. Only had a 375ml of cognac, used it up, have to resupply. Used ABK6, not pricey, but good on its own and now as I see, mixed. VSOP, but will try their VS this time as it's a bit cheaper, and, for mixing.
Have a bottle of Remy 1738 but that s**t's for sipping. Haven't actually opened it yet.

I agree with that; I was thinking that when I saw him being attacked for saying Milton Friedman was obsolete. Many said “what? You’re saying that Ronald Reagan’s favorite economist is no longer relevant? “.
Not a good look. But I read Vance’s full argument , and he was trying to make the case that things like tariffs, which Friedman believed were terrible, are in fact now necessary.
But very few people have the patience to try and figure out the esoteric argument he was making. As you say; too many words.

Cytokine storm is what it is called. One doc saved all (or most) of his patients by giving them alkaline water from baking soda vs the new aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). I read about it when the wuhan flu plandemic was raging.
I think of trying this with a random cold from our grandkids but always forget.

I do like a good sidecar. A sugar rim on the glass is optional, but changes the flavor just enough that I'd rather have it than not. I'd certainly want it with the tart lemons I got at the store this week.
The Joy of Mixology book points out the "families" of cocktails.
Had a whiskey sour? A sidecar is just a cognac/brandy sour. And a margarita is a tequila sour. The recipes for them are all "mostly liquor, with a sweet thing and a sour thing."

A great but dangerous and simple one, that only has the sweet not the sour except a bit from the limes, is the caipirinha, the Brazilian "national cocktail". Just lime juice, sugar, and cachaca, which is just a simple rum with a hint of sweetness and cane juice flavor. In hot weather goes down too easy.
There are all kinds of aged cachacas but the plain one is best for caipirinhas, guessing it's aged 2 years or so and either doesn't see wood or is "cleaned up" like light rum usually is (color from aging removed).
