Hey Pixy, if your question was not rhetorical, TSMC put the new lines in Arizona because they opened a massive facility there a few years ago. And I suspect AZ and the US government threw lots of money at them.

In that case, go long on reverse osmosis membranes. Data centers need cooling. There is very active research in new coolants, but water is the cheapest available. According to Copilot: Chip manufacturing is highly water-intensive, requiring significant amounts of ultrapure water for various processes, with facilities using up to 10 million gallons per day, equivalent to the daily consumption of 33,000 households. TSMC's new facility in Arizona aims to reclaim about 65% of its water usage. Still a lot of water needed. "India has fined Hewlett Packard 1.4 billion rupees for price fixing.
About tree fiddy in real money." Well, $1.4 Million USD. Enough to get the attention of a small to medium sized company, but barely a mosquito bite to a company as large as HP. When fines are only a "cost of doing business", then the punishments need to be something they can't ignore. Perhaps pass a law that removes legal protection for the company's copyrights and patents inside your company specific to the devices they were selling related to the conviction for cartel-like behaviour. "Hey everyone, it's open season on HP's ink, its printer cartridges, its printers, and its software and firmware with regards to same. Reverse engineer and copy all you want so you can make your own clones of these things to use and sell. Wikipedia, TSMC
In December 2022, TSMC announced its plans to triple its investment in the Arizona plants in response to the growing tensions between the US and China and the supply chain disruption that has led to chip shortages. ... In April 2024, the Biden administration announced a preliminary agreement to award TSMC Arizona up to $6.6 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act, alongside up to $5 billion in proposed loans, to support TSMC's planned investment of more than $65 billion across three fabrication plants in Phoenix. ... In July 2025, [C.C.] Wei [President, Chairman, and CEO of TSMC] indicated that TSMC would speed up its production timelines toward the completion of a "gigafab" cluster totalling six facilities after an additional $100 billion investment in Arizona. In the meantime, redirect the windmills to power desalination since reverse-osmosis plants can (but shouldn't) run intermittently. Up until 2021, Nestlé, now BlueTriton Brands, was bottling water from the Phoenix municipal water supply. That angered a lot of people, but Phoenix went out of their way to provide enough water so that Nestlé could competitively bottle there since 2018. In other words, Phoenix is very aware of the value of water, and unlike most other cities is pro-active. I'm guessing that since Nestlé discontinued there, citing competitive reasons in the bottled water market moved elsewhere and that the water capacity is now available for TSMC. Capacity not being used is money wasted. Phoenix needed a new customer. Posted by: Community Notes at July 17, 2026 05:54 AM (pUU4E) 50

I can't think of a worse place to put water intensive businesses than in the American Southwest.
The Colorado river supplies 7 Western states and it is wildly over allocated. The question at this time is not if but when water runs short that will require draconian rationing that will affect aspect of life. Arizona, Phoenix, in particular are in the bullseye of this looming disaster; it seems putting a water intensive major metropolitan area smack in the middle of a desert where summertime temperatures reach a 115° is a problem. The current negotiations between the seven states and the federal government over what to do next is at a standstill. The issue is each state wants all the other ones to give up their water. If these states were countries they'd be at war with each other right now. At the end of 2026 the Colorado river water agreements end; the lawyers are already popping the corks on the champagne bottles. Good point on Phoenix water use, but a receding water table hints at a declining supply for the future.
Phoenix gets 98% of its water from surface-water source and uses its massive ground-water reserves for backup. Think of it as the water equivalent of the Strategic Oil Preserve. In the meantime, Phoenix is leading in Advanced Water Purification because they are a junior partner to California in tapping the Colorado River. That in itself is interesting, because Arizona may pay for California to desalinate water so that there is no need for building pipelines from the Pacific into Arizona and thus reduce California's dependence on the Colorado River. If Windows, check the event viewer (It's under Administrative tools in an old copy of Windows 7 I have). In the event viewer, expand Windows Logs, System. Search near the time the problem was happening for critical events (Red X). That'll at least give you a clue. Might be a thermal issue if you see CPU throttling. Get a tech to open it up, clean out the dust, and replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Might be a storage device starting to go bad. Where is there too much water? --Posted by: NaCly Dog
The southern third of the whole Mississippi Valley, for several months a year. A canal and reservoir system to put the overage into aquifers would dwarf the pyramids as a public works project, but just think of all the topsoil and wrecked cars we'd keep out of the Gulf. You could water about five states with the wastage, and replenish farmland all over the west. And if you needed to improve employment numbers, you could do it with spoons. Maybe we'll move into this when the Stalinists take over. They used to love that kind of stuff. And now you can call it AI! Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at July 17, 2026 06:25 AM (zdLoL) 99

I will propose a pipeline from there to replenish the Aquifer to my State Reps. Why should the CA Train to Nowhere siphon up all the graft in the USA. Posted by: NaCly Dog at July 17, 2026 06:28 AM (u82oZ) 102

I still haven't figured out how all the electronic gizmos work on the Mazda. Old phones I want to delete. Add my radio stations on favorites.

Opened "event viewer" and nosed around. No red X observed anywhere in the logs. Plenty of yellow flags though with 'DistributedCOM' being the common link.
No idea what that is. Posted by: one hour sober at July 17, 2026 06:30 AM (J4Dwc) 105
Did or did not President Trump last night layout the predicate that China effectively engaged in acts of war on the United States of America?

Good morning, one and all! The air sucks out here to the point a Code Red has been called and we're told to not go outside if at all possible. I'm sure that some talking head will claim that this is climate change in action.

52 I've been having an issue with my laptop for the last few days. Every so often, when surfing the net, everything freezes up. I cannot open tabs, I cannot close down the browser. The only thing that gets me surfin' again is Cntl-Alt-Delete and selecting task manager. I don't even have to do anything when the task manager window opens. I just have to immediately close it and everything returns to normal...until it happens again.

The war in Iran is part of the US conflict with China. Xi's actions are helping the US, so leave him in power. Posted by: NaCly Dog at July 17, 2026 06:35 AM (u82oZ) 110

I never understood the reasoning of the Leftists when they say we need to save This and preserve That and leave that Other Thing in pristine shape. I'm about to head out to Cleveland where today's events just got canceled. Tomorrow's big storms should clear out the smoke and allow my competition...never mind. My event will get canceled, too. But the air will be good! Posted by: t-bird at July 17, 2026 06:36 AM (EJWxb) 114

What? Only Five Eyes have the franchise of election interference, regime change and nation building? Our CIA exists to engage in Acts of War on every other sovereign nation on this planet. Posted by: Community Notes at July 17, 2026 06:37 AM (xE0sV) 115

Have you tried rebooting the machine? If there is a pending update that needs to restart, it can cause the PC to act all wonky. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 17, 2026 06:38 AM (/eAef) 116
