Thursday Overnight Open Thread - July 16, 2026 [Doof]

Open thread. That's it. That's the content. Whelm yourselves!

***

Doof Enterprises, LLC would like to apologize for the lack of a proper ONT tonight. We'd also like the SAVE Act signed into law. We don't see either happening.

101 I'm very whelmed, if this counts?

I've had a very whelming day of not much.

For our big nursing school reunion in September I rebelled, as always, and am only going to the dinner vs the university or hospital tours to see all the new stuff since Florence Nightingale and I graduated. I informed a former roommate and two friends of my decision as I am not a good alumnus.

I am fairly sure my college daze would return if I were in a crowd of women being herded. Pretty dang sure I'd be sarcastic, cracking jokes & getting into trouble. Therefore I made the decision not to put myself in this position & just go to a dinner.

I would offer a room or two to people but fear they are liberal or gross. My former roommate lives nearby and the one person I want to come from out of state probably can't due to travel.

I asked my husband, who knew my friends and classmates, if he wanted to go to dinner and he said no thanks. I don't blame him as I am mainly going out of curiosity & to see a couple of friends I bonded with in my 20's. Who know most of my secrets. Who know that I named a nun instructor Sister Catsh*t (she's dead).

So whelm away and go to overwhelming.

That also implies that something, or someone, could be two, three, or more whacks out. However many whacks it takes to get them to the not-out-of-whack state.

133 I don't think the current allegations against Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) are enough to ring the expulsion bell, UNLESS more comes out.

What is now known: He had consensual relationships with 2 female House employees when he was a Congressman. The women in question were not his employees. They were employed by other Congresspersons. Gallego was single at the time, at least sort of-- he was in between his divorce and his re-marriage to his new wife.

He also is accused of using campaign donations to take his family to the Super Bowl.

By 2026 standards, this is weak beer. Scumbag? You betcha. Expulsion? Un, no.

When these things are made public, often other accusers come out of the woodwork, though. That's what happened to former Rep. Eric Swalwell.

There are others but I am so whelmed I can't think of them now. Sometimes my husband says them to get me irritated.

Today he simply asked that I not drive over the curb after a MD appt for him. Because last time I drove over the curb as he was talking to me and got alarmed.

I mean, I am not drinking like I was when I hit a fence with his car in college at a burger place with my brother. I had to then park so we could laugh and get it together. It was an old beater car and what was a few more dents and scratches? In my defense it was a sharp left turn after the drive up burgers and his old car did not do sharp turns. He didn't care that I remember.

You are all still unknown to my husband and he would be very alarmed to find out that I play here now and then. There would be questions: "Who are these people" Morons. And then it would get worse and I'd lose my laptop (he's really a great guy or I would not be with him and he thinks I am very entertaining and never boring).

Plus I am olde, although I am often told I don't look or act olde, I am. This is a bummer, but it is wut it is.

196 I pulled a total moronette move today. I drove my husband to the doctor's office as he was on a happy drug for an injection.

Got dressed in a hurry and after I got there I realized my skirt was on inside out when I was in the car...with the seams and tag on the outside as I grabbed it off a guestroom bed. A black, gauze maxi skirt so not too bad.

I planned to stay in my car, burning fossil fuel for the AC, and listen to loud rock music and read anyway and hoped he did not require me going inside or have an emergency.

I also did not care much as I still looked better than most of the people I am around at any time or place.

However, this has never happened to me before. Shocking, I know, but at least I remembered my underwear.

I once saw a girl with her mother drive up there at 2pm. She was in flannel pj's (it is hot) and looked like she was dragged to the car from her bed by her hair. I sho' nuff looked better than her with my wrong side out skirt today.

206 >>On a related topic, I was surprised tonight that Trump didn't mention the yuuge disparity between total votes cast in 2020 (ginormous) compared to total votes cast in 2016 and 2024 (far less turnout). That has always seemed to me to stink on ice, but Trump never touched on that tonight.

I'm not. If Trump had made this all about him and 2020 we all know what the media would write about tomorrow. If at all.

Tonight was about proving our elections are not secure. It was a mostly non-partisan message that there is evidence that at least our chief foreign adversary is attacking our elections successfully to the tune of 220 million Americans and our intelligence agencies at the very least lied about it and covered it up. Our media gave a helpful assist toward proving they can't be trusted because they refused to even cover it.

Tonight was the opening salvo and documents Trump has declassified are already being posted on X. This was not a one time event, just the start. It's bigger than 2020, it's every election including the one coming up in November.

215 I look at the election of 2020 this way:

If it had not happened as it did there are many good things after the horror of 3am the next day:

1. Trump would not be so mad today and doing stuff to irritate Dims and strike fear in the hearts of our enemies. I think this loss made him bolder and he's planned everything out for four years as he simmered.
2. We would remain ignorant about voter fraud
3. We would not have had Biden to laugh at
4. States were identified as cheating pits of hellfire
5. We might not have ever known about MN and Somolian's Learing Centers

I'm sure there are more but I need to do other things that are overwhelming.

I said in 2016 (to mostly laughter and derision) he had a chance to be the most conservative president since Reagan. By 2017 I realized something much different about him (and said it often here), which took a further 8 years to confirm because both the R's and maybe some of his naivety and then COVID really fucked his first term good -- he is not just the most conservative since Reagan, he is one of the most consequential figures in the history of the world.

Since Nixon's 1972 trip, every modern U.S. president has visited China, including Ford, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump. Additionally, high-level cabinet officials, such as Secretaries of State, Defense, and Treasury, alongside congressional delegations, have routinely traveled to Beijing for diplomatic, economic, and security summits. My dude would like it but his spine does not travel well due to 40yrs of long distance running and his parent's arthritis genetics. He's a Moron and knows it because I tell him at times.

He really likes fruitcake so I suppose I could say I was Christmas shopping for him and it requires Delta Airlines. He also knows I am horrible with directions and he'd never see me again.

Ran into the ugly side of things at the nursing home over the past couple of days. The rooms have shared bathroom. One bathroom per two rooms with a door to each room.

Well, my mother's neighbors, are not right in the head. One of them is the bathroom police. She sits in a wheelchair right next to it, and will cuss you out if you go into "her bathroom". Nice. Miley and I both have been blessed out by the nasty old biddy for stepping foot in it.

And then, another really demented woman cusses out the staff all the time. She brought one of the nurses to almost tears. I gave her my sympathy, and she said that woman has hit her a time or two.

She said it's tricky. If they even defend themselves too much, they can get fired.

Since Musk took it over it is now a place where information that was previously censored is now being shared. It's why Trump has released all the documents he said he declassified tonight are being posted there.

The Dragonfly drone "helicopter" mission to Titan is going well. It should launch in 2028, and arrive at Titan by 2034.

Flying on Titan is much easier. Density is 4 times that of earth atmosphere, and gravity is 0.14g. Result is it takes 1/40th of the power per unit mass to fly.

Terminal velocity for a human would be just 11 mph. And, if you could breath and it wasn't so cold, you could actually strap bird like wings to your arms and flap and actually fly.

Of course, you'd need a spacesuit and heaters and that add so much mass you couldn't do it by a long shot.

341 317 I would have thought, or assumed, that going back to 1948 that from the start it would be everybody loddi-doddi, no exceptions, all hands on deck, as far as national service obligations. Possibly alternative non-combat roles for genuine, authentic pacifists. But everyone is liable for military service.

Yes. The dislike of the Haredim is palpable everywhere.

The only thing you need to add is that the same leftists locally and abroad who heavily funded the anti-Netanyahu protests after Oct. 7, 2023 are fanning the flames of hate.

Well, Titan's surface pressure is about 1.5 atm. You wouldn't need a pressure suit. But, surface temperature is -290F, so you need one hell of insulating, heated suit of some sort.

This is probably their biggest war since the 1948 War of Independence, so that might be a facor.

I don't even know if Israel HAD universal conscription before this war.

Israel suffered about the same number of casualties on 10/7 as we did on 9/11-- appx 3000. Our population is 330 some million. Israel's is about 8 million. This is a total war for Israel, and feelings are running hot.

354 My only knowledge of Tenino is that those were some of the topographical maps the Army used to teach land navigation. Back before GPS and all that. It's how I learned to read terrain contour intervals. Tenino must be pretty hilly because I remember LOTS of contour lines. Heh.

It is also the sectional that has Ft Lewis on or near it. It is pretty hilly. Most everyone that learned land nav used that map, and everyone called it ten neen oh
The sandstone that was used to rebuild San Francisco after the big earthquake and fire came from Tenino quarries.

Even if possible, this would be well beyond anything we could imagine doing. This is "Type 2" civilization level energy stuff. 363 mikeski - Clearly our conversation last night calls for a taste test! I used these recipes:

Standard Aviator:
2 oz gin
3/4 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz maraschino
1/4 oz creme de violette
garnish with cherry

Chanel #5 Aviator:
2 oz gin
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz maraschino
3/4 oz creme de violette
lavender bitters
garnish with cherry

I asked my wife and she couldn't tell the difference. IMO they are both delicious. Maybe you're right about my version being a bit too strong. Still I can't shake the feeling that the creme de violette *should* be more featured.

I should have left out the bitters to make it more scientific. Perhaps another round is called for. . . .

I don't usually use the cherries, but that's what the recipe I found online called for. I used the good kind; we don't buy the radioactive sort. I think if you add a bit of juice, that might do more to color the drink than the violette.

366 Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election — which he lost to Joe Biden — has persisted into his second term, despite nearly all of the dozens of court cases contesting the outcome being dismissed or dropped due to lack of evidence or standing. The 2020 election — which one expert told NOTUS was “probably the most investigated election in American history”

In 2000 the Dems claimed the election had been stolen. Bush and the Floridan government gave them direct access for a full forensic analysis of the ballots. The finding? Shrub had won by a handful more votes then the official count.

So then why the response to jail people investigating the 2020 election, to destroy records, and to hide everything that could be hidden if there was no fraud?

We have seen some odd things with star power output - there are stars that have regularly variable output for example, but we should be able to see quite clearly a star disappearing over some period of time if another civilization were building these in our galaxy...

Maybe I'll have to give this a try, too. A person's sense of taste does change over time.

Cherries are an odd addition. I suppose someone saw "maraschino liqueur" and said "obviously maraschino cherries would go with that." Despite not really.

And yes, the syrup from some Luxardo-brand or similar cherries would add some color. But more purple than blue? Maybe call that one an "aviation at twilight" or something.
