Wednesday Night ONT - July 15, 2026 [TRex]

07152026-image(7).jpg

How do you do, fellow kids? Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans. The bar is open and freshly re-stocked. Free refills!

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are discouraged due to the heat. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. If you're here for an argument, please go through the second door on the right and then close the door behind you. This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

Will reading the content protect you from Taco Bell lettuce explosive diarrhea? Couldn't hurt, right? The ONT is not a miracle worker, so keep your expectations low.

Horde Shopping Update

I know what you're thinking. "Last week, you told us about the impending auction of Gus, one of the largest and most complete T-Rex skeletons ever found. What happened with that auction?" Glad you asked.

The auction estimate was $20 to $30 million, but Gus sold for over $50 million to an undisclosed buyer.

A Tyrannosaurus rex fossil billed as one of the world's largest and most complete specimens sold for a record $50.1 million Tuesday.

Sotheby's said the 67-million-year-old fossil, nicknamed "Gus," is now the most expensive set of dinosaur bones ever auctioned off, besting the almost $45 million price tag for a nearly complete stegosaurus sold by the same New York auction house in 2024. The previous record holder had been a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton nicknamed "Stan" that sold for nearly $32 million in 2020.

The auction house said the mystery winner outbid six other prospective buyers during Tuesday's 10-minute bidding battle.

If the buyer is among the Horde, please send me a note. Your secret will be safe with me.

Kills Bugs Fast

Ace of Spades does not endorse any specific provider of mosquito killing drones and I cannot vouch for this company but anyone working to rid us of the flying blood suckers has my attention: Tornyol

Tornyol combines ultrasonic sonar and intelligent control algorithms in a 40-gram drone to eradicate all the mosquitoes in your space.

Tornyol uses ultrasonic sonar and autonomous guidance algorithms to locate and grind mosquitoes in its propellers.

A single Tornyol unit should be able to protect areas up to 5 acres.

If one is good, why not a swarm of skeeter killers? I'd be interested to see the result after roaming around my backyard for an hour.

Of course, there is always the old fashioned way...

The voice and delivery is unmistakably classic Clarkson. On another level, a 1998 television show featuring fighting robots might have been prescient...

Where are the Iron Maiden fans?

ABBA now owns half of Iron Maiden? Kind of.

Iron Maiden Sells Music Catalog, Name, Image and Likeness Rights to Pophouse

Pophouse Entertainment, the investment firm co-founded by ABBA's Bjorn Ulvaeus, has announced a partnership with legendary British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, acquiring a stake in the publishing and master music rights, and the name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights. Billboard reports that Pophouse has acquired a 50% "stake" in the assets.

The deal includes rights to the band's iconic mascot, the ghoulish character "Eddie."

However, for the sake of context, Pophouse paid upward of $300 million for a similar deal with Kiss, although the percentage was unclear.

The partnership, which has been structured and developed over the last year between Pophouse and the band's co-manager, Andy Taylor, "will enable Iron Maiden to pursue new creative ventures that connect with existing fans as well as bringing their extensive catalogue to new audiences," according to the announcement.

Does this mean Iron Maiden concerts will continue for perpetuity with a holographic Bruce Dickinson singing Fear of the Dark with a holographic Eddie?

Ontario Public Service Announcement

Ontario police: Do not bring grenades to police stations

Police in Ontario are reminding residents not to bring explosives to police stations after an unexploded World War II grenade was turned in at an Ottawa station.

The Ontario Provincial Police said a resident brought the grenade to the OPP Detachment in Ottawa on Friday.

"The OPP would like to remind the public that if you find such items, please do not transport them to your local police station," OPP East Region wrote on social media. "This could obviously prove extremely dangerous to the person bringing the item and others around."

Officials recommended residents instead leave any explosives where they are found and report the location to authorities.

Of course, Ontario appears to be on fire at the moment, so maybe grenades have dropped down the priority list since Friday.

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called The Baseball Bat Bros. The channel does nothing other than test, review and compare bats. That is it.

Does price matter for wood bats? How does an illegally corked bat work? Do different shape handles matter? Does the cheapest bat sold at Walmart work? If you're into baseball bats, they have it. Nothing else.

His channel has over 1.2 million subscribers.

I know what you're thinking. Have over 5 million people really watched a ten minute video testing eleven wiffleball bats? Yes.

I'm including solely out of awe that someone can establish a successful YouTube channel that does nothing other than test and compare baseball bats. This is exactly the kind of niche narrowcasting that is only enabled by the interweb and platforms like YT. The videos are short, simple and digestible with no artificial drama. No highly polished graphics or editing. No clickbait.

26 Tis a frustrating day. Of the two 'active interview process' positions, one turned me down ("we really really liked you, but not quite enough", basically) and the other dropped the hourly rate - barely will pay the bills if they actually hire me (note this is a contract position and I haven't interviewed with the client yet, this is still 'interview process' phase).

So sick of this. God, I know You've got a plan for everyone, but I'd love to have a clue what the next step for me is gonna look like!

Heh.

You know, I do not think I have ever bought an IKEA brand anything. I remember when I was buying book shelves for the apartment I found one that when put together was so far ahead of the others I had bought in quality and materials that it was plain as day. But I need a lot of books shelves so the cheaper, flimsier ones were the way to go in my mind. So I had one standout.

Which is...true. I checked out what he is doing with his billion bucks instead of giving it to charity and found two things - he's got some grifting NGO in the US called FWD.us which is for legalizing all the illegals oh and he dumped his average looking Asian wife for a French woman with enormous knockers.

Funny how all these billionaires the left says they hate are the ones funding them.

56 Since the Falklands were topical today, I refreshed my memory. Fun fact to tell those who claim that England "colonized" the islands; when the English discovered them in 1765, there were NO human inhabitants. They're too far out in the ocean for any early people to have made it there. So the English who live their today are in fact the true descendants of the original inhabitants of the islands.

Also, England took possession of them 50 years before Argentina first existed.

Cancer markers continue to be below the "threshhold"; I have been feeling pretty good. We hope that is a good sign.

Tomorrow, Mr. TiFW and I are headed to Minneapolis for a Puzzle Parley weekend - I have been collecting antique wooden jigsaw puzzles fir many years, and the gentleman who restores these puzzles is going to be in attendance. Meeting him has been on my bucket list for several years.

Mr. TiFW will be taking a Scrollsaw Cutting Workshop while we are there - it was my way of sweetening the pot ♥️♥️♥️

While at my dentist's office this morning, I mentioned that we would be in Minneapolis this weekend, and he asked if we had plans to go to The Mall. Well, my ears perked right up - I had forgotten that the Mall of America was in Minneapolis!

I told Mr. TiFW that he can tell our dentist "Thanks a lot" the next time that he sees him....😂😂😂

I say "true" Blue Moon, but all this stuff was invented in the early 20th Century by an editor of the Maine Farmer's Almanac. There's no ancient tradition of any sort with it.

But, the seasonal convention does do the most astronomically and logically consistent job of fitting the occasional oddball 13th full Moon in tropical year into thing while respecting the real old traditions.

Only 26% of Muslim Americans said they view Israelis favorably, compared with 74% of White evangelical Protestants, 55% of Black Protestants, and 51% of Catholics.

The poll also found younger Americans across religious groups are more likely to view Palestinians favorably than Israelis, with favorable attitudes toward Israelis declining among both Republicans and Democrats over the past decade.

Foundation for Defense of Democracies researcher Hussain Abdul-Hussain said the findings resemble polling among Palestinians.

Michigan the whole of it, should be on Central time. At Mach 2, you can "beat the earth's rotation" going westward, and you don't have to be at too high a latitude to do it. If interested you could run the numbers.

Letting Grok do the work, yep the Concorde could beat the earth's rotation, barely, even at the equator.

So, what you could do is just exactly cancel the Erf's rotation at a given latitude, and have local mean time at your exact location hold constant at 12:00 midnight, and be at New Year's instant for the duration of the flight.

Heh, with the Concorde, the Sun could rise in the west and move eastward. Take off heading west from Europe near sunset, and "time would move backwards", the sun rising up from the western horizon.

How many polls said that Trump was going to lose the election?

I keep going back to one of my favorite events of the year: the moment Canada got punked for gold in men's hockey. How many people predicted Team USA would win gold? Because Canada was so much better and they were just going to walk to a gold medal...

Except for one minor detail. The game had to be played, and the IOC insisted it be played, just to make sure Canada deserved it. And...well...they didn't.

Same thing with elections. Polls can go on and on and on all day. Didn't these same polls which confidently predicted Trump's defeat show Carter getting a second term handily over Reagan? OK...but we still had to do one little thing: hold the election anyway, just in case. And...the election was held and the polls were wrong.

251 I suppose if all the news channels report the same thing that makes it true...? I'll go ask Putin's election interference for Trump about it.

At high latitudes, Mach 2 is really outrunning Erf's rotation, and that "sun rising in the west" effect was quite pronounced.

254 Pollsters are very sensitive to being an outlier, that’s why it’s guaranteed they’ll show the same trend. If polls 1, 2, and 3 seem to indicate a slight trend, polls 4 & 5 will change whatever numbers they had to make sure and match it. And then they’ll all pat themselves on the back for agreeing with each other.

255 Oregon/Idaho time zone boundaries.

The Mountain Time bulge into Oregon is so the folks there can be on Boise time. You have to drive another hundred miles west to get to the next real town in Oregon.

The Pacific Time takeover in the Idaho Pan handle is so those folks can be on Spokane time. Again, it is a hundred mile drive south down a single two lane blacktop road to get to the Boise area.

Of course, there are those who just want to live on Tulsa Time...

I think my mother is going to be fine tonight. Here's my theory on what happened. That anesthesia for the emergency leg surgery just knocked her brain for a loop, causing that insane behavior. This has happened before with her. But we had to do it to save her life.

As crazy as it sounds, that big fall and knock on the head may have been a crude "shock treatment" and knocked her brain out of that crazy loop.

When I lived in France all the beaches were topless and the scenery was mostly gorgeous. That was before they had culturally enriched themselves like today so not sure if that still holds.

I tell you this. Saturday, right after the fall, the docs and nurses were telling me there wasn't much hope, poor quality of life, and didn't think treatment was viable. I told them to treat her one more day, Sunday.

If I had not done that, she wouldn't have made it. Monday, while still dragging my feet, I was about to well, you know. Dragging my feet and dreading it.

But then that miracle occurred. Always keep that mind. There is always hope, and one more day or two or three can make a difference.
