Man, was I watching a freaky thing about blindness and schizophrenia today. It turns out blind people don't get schizophrenic, because schizophrenia is some mismatch between an expected sensation (visual in this case) and a delivered sensation. People who are blind from birth have no expected sensation, so they never get a mismatch. It got me to wondering how they build up their library of expected sensations if they get eyesight later in life. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at July 14, 2026 07:39 PM (mmrXZ) 17

The warning comes after a fisherman was swept into the ocean at San Francisco’s Baker Beach on Friday afternoon. People who saw the man and called 911 reported a sneaker wave “struck without warning,” sending him into the water, San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Jonathan Baxter said on social media. Firefighters arrived at the scene around 1 p.m., joined by an SFPD police boat and drone units and an allied agency helicopter.

Speaking of waves.
My future ex husband and I were on a hiking trip along the western WA coast up by Shi Shi beach. We had a friend’s doggo with us, a lab mix named Fido. Great dog. So we walked along the rocky beach, over huge logs and found a really big log that reached out over the water. We all walked out on the log to check it out. My ex plopped down, cracked a beer and gave a big huzzah. Fido and I looked at each other and walked back about 200 feet and sat down. Not two minutes later, a sneaker wave built up and completely douched my ex sitting on the log. It completely covered him. As it receded, he was clinging to the log, soaking wet, rocks in his beer, gasping for air. Fido and I were laughing. Never seen a dog laugh before. This dog was laughing. We were at a Half Moon Bay beach bonfire party; a small creek bisects the beach and drains into the bay, we heard shouting, looked south, and two girls were being swept up the creek by a mammoth wall of foaming churn. They turned out to be okay.

>>That's true, but it eased my feelings to know it won't be a shark or a stingray or whatever else the ocean can dredge up.
The manager of my old dive shop wore a stingray spine on a chain around his neck. The spine came out of his calf where a stingray had deposited it. They are pretty mellow unless you step on one. That upsets them. Don't step on stingray. Posted by: JackStraw at July 14, 2026 09:31 PM (viF8m) 188

Rips don't just go out to see, they also run parallel to the shore. Around here that is very common. And if you try to swim through it most will get carried down the beach and out anyway and be exhausted when they do get out. So yea, don't fight the rip. Ride it until you are out of it then swim to shore. Posted by: JackStraw at July 14, 2026 09:37 PM (viF8m) 199

Been frustrated since the recent change that x videos won't play (on x) without signing up. Which I haven't because I'm not a joiner, even for Elon's place.
So I just installed an extension on my Vivaldi browser that re-directs x.com URLs to xcancel.com. Yay. It works. Unfortunately, xcancel won't accept the extended URL info (starting with "?") so I still have to delete that before it works. Still, at least I don't have to re-edit the x part every time. The fetching Mrs Beartooth was almost swept out to sea by a sneaker wave. She was fortunate to have two big dogs on leashes when it happened. The wave swepted up the dogs too and twisted them around her legs, essentially became anchors. She was stuck to the spot as the wave washed back to the ocean
