The Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward movie The Long, Hot Summer is on Movies! now. It has Orson Welles (almost unrecognizable in his makeup), Tony Franciosa, and Lee Remick, the Nicole Kidman of her day.
Next up, Sea Wife (1957), with this mind-boggling blurb: "After their ship is torpedoed, four people band together to survive, including an officer who falls in love with a woman that is secretly a nun." (Secretly a nun?) An early Richard Burton movie, with Joan Collins as, I suspect, the nun. In 1976, computers, even as a hobby, were not really on my radar. Mrs. Wolfus No. 1 and I would go to the computer lab at her college in Lafayette, LA, and play a "Star Trek" game on one of the terminals, but it was not a graphical game; you had to picture where your ship was and tell the computer how to move it by entering the coordinates. Your opponent would do the same -- I think. Or it might have been that the computer made its ship move a la chess, and then you had to respond to it. It's been a while since all that.

I remember him from "In the Mouth of Madness" (one of those movies where you watch the ending and immediately go back and watch the whole things again) and "Event Horizon". He did 'weird and disturbing' movies exceptionally well. I knew if I saw him in a picture, things were going to get interesting for the characters in a Chinese-curse sort of way. Good actor, pity he's gone. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at July 13, 2026 06:01 AM (O7YUW) 37

Last song we sang in yesterday's Anglican Church service was "Joy To The World" by the prolific English hymn writer, Issac Watts. It has become a Christmas hymn, but it's really about Christ's second coming. I appreciate that the Anglican priest tells us the background of the hymns, because I have done that myself in church services.

These Mexican recipes don't look like much, but they're deceptively difficult to get right. Fortunately, within a 10-minute drive at my house I have about six places I can go that are all off the charts great; these examples guided me through my failures. Now that I have a good red base figured out, my next move is is to go after authentic chili Colorado. The degree of difficulty here is it includes lard. That ought to be worth about five or six failures. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 13, 2026 06:27 AM (/eAef) 53
