Not something I would hang but that applies to most Hopper paintings but they are still enjoyable to look at. Nurse mentioned it has an east coast feel and I agree. It has the feel of an older east coast neighborhood I've seen in Providence and some bigger New England towns. The close houses, but still separate, is typical.
The point is the way the two women are enjoying the sunlight. The older woman (mother or grandmother) is relaxed, self-contained and reading. The younger one is on display for people to notice. Her focus is outward, not content with herself. It's subtle as Hopper often is. It's a small thing but the way the sun illuminates the wall in the room on the left of the scene, showing a spare, uncluttered space, seems to reflect the simpler, content feel of the older woman. Special effects costing nearly $15, with the eponymous shrews being represented in many shots by dogs with string mops attached to their backs. And speaking of bodacious tatas, it also stars Ingrid Goude, a former Miss Sweden who barely spoke a word of English. Not that she needed to in order to carry out her designated role in this film (as Monty Python would put it, "Featuring Ingrid Goude as the Girl with the Large Breasts").
