28 I think it's interesting when people paint optical phenomena, like this one and that famous painting of the man and woman with the curved mirror. As a person who's always dealt with being nearsided I've wondered if someone could make a picture, paint or digitally create one that when I looked at it with no lenses glasses, naked eye whatever, it would look in focus. I wasn't that great in optics class in college so I probably don't understand the physics that well. But I've always wondered.

This one's nice. It looks like he did a whole series on architecture, light, and reflection.

Wikipedia

At an early age, Estes moved to Chicago with his family, where he studied fine arts at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1952–56).

He frequently studied the works of realist painters such as Edgar Degas, Edward Hopper, and Thomas Eakins, who are strongly represented in the Art Institute's collection.

That was one of his better columns. Here are some extracts:

she was one of those ridiculous ladies who stand there with a sign that says, “Refugees Welcome,” demanding that even more perverted Third World peasants flood her country. Like gays for Palestine, it’s a societal suicide pact that they somehow think they’re exempt from. The numbers are undeniable. The majority of rapes in Europe are linked to migrants, even though they make up less than 10 percent of the population in many countries. But does that stop liberal women? No, it probably encourages them. Oh, I don’t think they want to be raped and beaten to death personally, but I think that they believe, at some level, that members of their own society deserve that fate. They believe their societies are evil, which naturally makes them the heroines in the young adult novel that is their lives, and they’re trying to atone for it by this ritual humiliation and sacrifice...They cast it as mercy and grace, but it’s not. They’re seeking to punish the rest of us for the sins they have adjudicated us guilty of committing as a society.

Some notes from recently visited Old Blighty-

Yes, the 3rd Worldization is continuing apace, at least in London.

Since I visited London about 2 years ago the change has been noticeable. The streets and sidewalks are now trashy or trashier with discarded cigarette butts everywhere springing like the flowers in Spring. Little crap shops have sprung up on whole streets.

Yrs, it's still possible to find areas of Old Old Blighty that are clean and well-organized but they are surrounded.

The one thing that strikes you is the huge influx of muslims and bagged up women. Mostly, because England was historically constructed became very much a Church-State (Protestant-style) to establish the Church of England. Its signs re everywhere in their Coronation, their Churches, Their Gov't Building. They make the point literally in words that, the power of their state is subject and founded on the grace and power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

But, you know, nah, forget all that guff.

They still go nutty over the Catholic Church, however islam is a-ok.

At least they've got Their National Health and Its Spiffy Fast-Track Euthanasia working for them.

183 Richard Estes
Ansonia, 1977

I love his photorealist paintings.

Whitney Museum of American Art - This painting depicts one of Richard Estes’ favorite landmarks, the Beaux Arts Ansonia building near his apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, here seen from about West 69th Street and Broadway looking north. The extraordinary detail and precision of the painting has led many to mistake it at first glance for a color photograph. Yet unlike a camera or the human eye, Ansonia depicts every detail in precise focus. And while the stone column functions as an axis on which the two sides of the painting hinge, creating a rough symmetry, Estes throws the composition off balance by taking small pictorial liberties that are revealed in the reflection of the glass window. The Ansonia is absent in the reflection, a Visa card sticker obscures the McDonald’s, and the colors have become slightly warmer. With the exception of a single figure, mostly obscured by shrubbery and a bus that seems stopped indefinitely at a red light, the painting includes very few signs of life—a near impossibility in daytime Manhattan.

Thanks

BONUS! The gov't if it's serious about border control should take a look at DFW airport.

On our flight back from England, there was another big change from 2 years ago. Our flight was maybe 65-35 people derived from the Subcontinent, the Middle East Plus a soupçon of Africa and Hispanic derived vs people looking Euro-derived.

Not saying they were all illegal or even not citizens of the US, but none of them were speaking English.

I hate that I even think this way but the Democrats and Biden/Obama kind of forced this stupid hyperawareness on us.

DOUBLE BONUS!! There may be a new scam for getting past border control, that I haven't seen before.

Getting off the plane, there were literally 20 or more wheelchairs lined up outside the plane door with folks from India? I think based on garb, who walked fine in London's airport, using them and the wheelchair pushers to take them away from the plane. They went through a different door through customs etc.

Now, I didn't stay there to confirm that all wc were filled and where they went but it was really strange.

i've never seen that before.

Anyone with border control knowledge have thoughts?

When I visited Ottawa in 2010 there was a day or two where I was standing in front of Parliament but could barely see it thanks to forest fires in QC.

Phoenix Sky Harbor has for years one of the biggest entry points for illegals; entire plane loads at a time, as you say. This always made me roll my eyes on people who focused on a Wall as the main source of border control.

The wheelchairs are a different scam. Airlines have started allowing anyone who requires a wheel chair to board and disembark before all other passengers, and all those who are by nature scammers with no shame have jumped at the chance to take advantage.

Because they were allowed to do it before does not indicate appropriateness or legality. BLM has set precedent for burning and looting. Does that mean it's OK to burn and loot again?

Not allowing the President of the US full air time is an affront to the Republic and its people.

But smoke affects NYC where the msm is HQed and it’s non stop coverage.

Community note
Broadcast networks have declined primetime addresses from Democratic presidents before. In 2022, ABC, CBS and NBC skipped Biden’s speech on threats to democracy for reruns. In 2014, they declined Obama’s immigration address as too political.

When Biden gave his primetime Independence Hall address in 2022 (the one with the scary red background that people still post images of), ABC ran Press Your Luck, NBC ran a Law & Order rerun, and CBS ran a Young Sheldon rerun.

Mike, you are a liar:
Major television networks do not have a set tally of the exact number of times they have declined to air presidential addresses. However, it is an established practice that networks occasionally pass on broadcasting speeches they deem primarily political or partisan rather than official governance.Prominent examples of networks declining to carry a president's live address on their primary broadcast channels include:July 2026: ABC and NBC elected not to interrupt regular programming for an election-focused White House address by President Donald Trump, streaming it on their digital platforms instead.September 2022: Major networks declined to carry President Joe Biden's live, prime-time speech on democracy ("Battle for the Soul of the Nation"), classifying it as a political address.November 2014: Several major broadcast networks chose to stick with their regular prime-time entertainment schedules rather than air President Barack Obama's national address on immigration reform

225 I’ve never understood the need for people to be first on a plane. You will be in your cramped seat for 3 hours. Why do you so desperately want to sit there for an extra 30 mins while everyone boards?

Ahh but you want to make sure there room for your bag up top. As long as you’re not at the very end of boarding it’s fine. Time it so there are 15 or so people behind you and you’re good.
