118 This is a very effective painting. Venus in her naked glory and feminine perfection, so real against the misty environs of Mount Olympus. The flowing cloak, the golden apple and edge of the chariot form a frame around Venus making her stand out and further establishing the era. It isn't pornographic (not that Venus would care) but it is intensely sexy. I wonder if this would be displayed in a museum or men's club rather than a home.

I'll leave the obvious boob remarks to others even if I have them in mind.

In large part, yes. Prior to this, the Romans worshipped ancient, formless, numinous gods. A sort of half-step between primitive deism and an organized theology. Those ancient religious features, particularly haruspices, persisted alongside the cribbed Greek theology, but the State religion reflected Greek theology more than its Latin or Etruscan roots from fairly early on.

My brother had to deal with that when he was a professor at Perdue. Had a stunning coed come up to him and offer him sex in exchange for a better grade. He is a moral man in a good marriage, so he rebuffed her, but even he admitted that it took a lot of personal strength to do so, as hot as she was.

Eh, depends, I hate manipulators and using sex to try to manipulate me made me cold as ice whether in business, academia, or military. And distance is your friend in such matters--clear delineation between personal and professional lives.

You can see the pitch coming a mile away if your eyes are open--poor performance, manipulating co workers (students), etc. etc.
