And no one ever gave me the straight answer: it's porn. Except they were clever in those days and you could hang it on your walls instead of having to hide it in your drawer.

118 This is a very effective painting. Venus in her naked glory and feminine perfection, so real against the misty environs of Mount Olympus. The flowing cloak, the golden apple and edge of the chariot form a frame around Venus making her stand out and further establishing the era. It isn't pornographic (not that Venus would care) but it is intensely sexy. I wonder if this would be displayed in a museum or men's club rather than a home.

I'll leave the obvious boob remarks to others even if I have them in mind.

His wife held onto his feet and legs for a full five minutes before some other passengers eventually came over to help pull him back into the aircraft.

135 The list of those who will model has *vastly* expanded.

It's no longer social suicide to model.

For example: the Peace Dollar has the only numismatic depiction of Lady Liberty where we know for certain who the model was - because it was the sculptor's wife, which made it ok.

Even modeling for *our nation's coinage* was considered the work of a common whore, so women and artists took pains to keep it quiet.

And that was only a hundred years ago.

183 Musée d'Orsay: The Birth of Venus was one of the great successes of the 1863 Salon where it was bought by Napoleon III for his private collection.

Cabanel, a painter who received numerous awards throughout his career, at that time played an important role in teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and in running the Salon. Typical of his virtuoso technique, this painting is a perfect example of the popular and official artistic taste of the period.

In the eclectic spirit of the Second Empire, he combines references to Ingres with an 18th century style of painting.
Cabanel took as his subject a famous episode from classical mythology when Venus is born of sea-foam and carried ashore. This theme, very popular in the 19th century, provided some artists with the opportunity to introduce eroticism without offending public morality, under the pretext of representing a classical subject. For Cabanel, the mythological theme is indeed a pretext for the portrayal of a nude figure, which, though idealised, is nonetheless depicted in a lascivious pose.

Emile Zola denounced this ambiguity. 😏 (More).

204 I think the Romans just took a lot of the Old Greek Homo mythological stories and just swapped out the names.
Posted by: Commissar of plenty and festive little hats at July 14, 2026 10:01

In large part, yes. Prior to this, the Romans worshipped ancient, formless, numinous gods. A sort of half-step between primitive deism and an organized theology. Those ancient religious features, particularly haruspices, persisted alongside the cribbed Greek theology, but the State religion reflected Greek theology more than its Latin or Etruscan roots from fairly early on.

This extended well beyond religion. The Romans in the Republic recognized and respected Greek intellectual traditions as superior to their own from the earliest days, to the point where Greek fluency was the mark of an elite man, and his children would be educated by Greek slaves.

"Film Threat founder Chris Gore and co-host Alan Ng caught a screening and posted a no-spoiler, out-of-theater reaction to YouTube, and this time the duo split. Gore walked out “mixed.” Ng walked out done.

Ng checked out early. “I was bored out of my mind,” he says, adding he was gone “pretty much from the beginning.” The sound didn’t help. He says he couldn’t make out the dialogue at first, and once he could, he realized “how bad the dialogue is.”

His verdict: “This is the most pretentious movie I’ve seen all year.” And the kicker: “I can’t wait to not see this movie again.” When the two wrapped up, the one-word summary of Ng’s reaction was simply “disaster.”

If they did they wouldn't be a Democrat.

There isn't even a c-hair's width of daylight in that party to be reasonable or normal. They kill babies on videotape and sell the parts to China and other high bidders. That came out 10 years ago. Anyone who didn't "move on" is "all in".

"Strabo," I'm guessing, means "cross-eyed" or "squinting."

-----

Yeah, Strabo is the cognomen "cross-eyed."

But he was Pompey the Great's hardassed, kneebreaking old man.

A Picene himself, he went on a world-historical rampage against Picenum at large and Asculum in particular during the Social Wars.

He was... unforgiving.

Posted by: polynikes

My brother had to deal with that when he was a professor at Perdue. Had a stunning coed come up to him and offer him sex in exchange for a better grade. He is a moral man in a good marriage, so he rebuffed her, but even he admitted that it took a lot of personal strength to do so, as hot as she was.

Eh, depends, I hate manipulators and using sex to try to manipulate me made me cold as ice whether in business, academia, or military. And distance is your friend in such matters--clear delineation between personal and professional lives.

You can see the pitch coming a mile away if your eyes are open--poor performance, manipulating co workers (students), etc. etc.
