Thursday Overnight Open Thread - July 9, 2026 [Doof]

doof-IMG_9745.jpg

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Thursday ONT! Open thread, as always. Content supplied for those who are interested. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

***

Let's learn all of these stats and figures and quiz Weasel on Sunday night

-----

Strangely satisfying to watch!

What would you want to throw in there?

-----

Who doesn't like a good origin story?

-----

Go big or go home!

World’s largest paper airplane has a 65-foot wingspan

Largest-Paper-Airplane.jpg

It’s easy to craft a paper airplane capable of soaring across a classroom, but one that can travel 200 feet is a bit harder. A group of students from Italy’s University of Pisa not only managed to reach that distance on a single glide—they did so with the Guinness World Record holder for the largest paper airplane ever assembled.

Built using only paper and some glue, the team’s nearly 23-foot-long creation and its over 65-foot wingspan cruised through a warehouse at Italy’s annual We Make Future expo on June 25. According to the university’s announcement, the students broke a record previously held since 2013 by Germany’s Braunschweig Institute of Technology.

Video segment at the link. Foreign language narration but still kewl.

-----

Ever wonder to yourself "How long do squirrels typically live?" No? OK, feel free to skip this one, then.

Squirrel Lifespan: How Long Do Squirrels Live?

doof-squirrel-070926.jpg

You see them often, but how long are you seeing the same squirrels? Find out how long squirrels live, and what affects a squirrel's lifespan.

Look outside at your yard or in a public park for even just a minute or two, and you’re likely to see squirrels. These bushy-tailed critters are as adorable as they are wily, with their scavenging ways and problem-solving skills. If you’ve ever seen a baby squirrel or adult, you might wonder about a squirrel’s lifespan. How long do squirrels live? The answer is more complex than you might think.

Go ahead - check out the whole thing.

-----

Tin foil hats? Yup - I'll try on whatever ya got!

56 Evening, all,

Yes, I've noticed my local Walmarts slowly closing down the self-checkout stations. They usually don't have more than two regular checkouts open. Maybe they'd go to three or four during really busy times. But they usually have at least one open soon after opening now.

Anybody with two brain cells could have told them what would happen with a high-crime-oriented population like we have here. But nooooo, they had to try it.

67 Just finished watching a 1950 noir called Border Incident, with Ricardo Montalban as a Mexican cop who goes undercover to find out who is transporting illegal workers across the border. The film -- B & W, very atmospheric -- is at pains to state that most of the crossers are legal workers, and that the American farmers pay them legal wages. But some are willing to pay to get smuggled across, and then they have no recourse whatever.

Somehow I doubt the notion that the majority of the border crossers did it legally even in 1950. But it is an exciting film from early in Montalban's career, before that back injury that gave him such trouble later, and directed with style by Anthony Mann.

I hated two points. One, that they were getting my labor for free; I wasn't getting a discount on my purchases for doing their work. Second, that damn screen right in my face, rubbing it in that I'm under surveillance. Once I put a plastic bag over the screen, and you'd have thought I'd damaged the machine in some way. They converged shouting on me as though they'd caught me shoplifting. After that I refused to use the self-checkouts, and still do.

Our first, Alvin, lasted two years ... until one of my brothers friends fed him a sugar cube, and he shit himself to death.

Later in life, we rescued 3 orphaned babies after a storm knocked over a tree they were living in. Our cat had just had kittens, so my mom put the squirrels in with the kittens, and the mother cat took them in an raised them.

Damn things grew up faster than the kittens and they were climbing everywhere in the house ... pretty funny actually.

It went poorly. The agent's phone couldn't connect half the time. And while he said he couldn't legally tell me whether a neighborhood was good or bad, he mentioned there was a guy in the street near the house screaming his head off at eleven in the morning. Not a good sign.

I have another tomorrow morning -- a house I looked at back in May and passed on. Its price has come down quite a bit, and I have adjusted my hopes somewhat as well, so we'll see.

90 I never liked self-checks but the day I learned to really, sincerely hate them was when I paid for something with cash and the bill feed jammed so I couldn't get my change. I had to wait like 20 minutes for the manager to show up and open the machine because there is only one key in the whole damn store and only one person authorized to use it. And then he acts like he's pissed at me for the inconvenience.

A scene like it was featured in the young adult Roy Rogers mystery I read at age nine, The Ghost of Mystery Rancho. Roy is stranded in the West Texas desert in a pool of quicksand by the villain, the Ghost. He writes a message on paper with a lead-nosed bullet, and sends Trigger off with a "Go home!", hoping the horse will go where he last was stabled. His hosts read the message and get to him just in time.

It's a good little story, with a narrative drive you wouldn't believe and a thunderbolt revelation held to the end. It started my true interest in the mystery genre.

145 Jack White and Isaac Brock both turned 51 today. The former is more than a rock musician; he is a music business phenomenon. As a band member, Jack White has been guitarist, singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and producer with The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, and his solo act. He is also a music publisher and businessman with Third Man Records, as well as providing guitar gear, effects pedals, books, film studio and dark room services, and so on, through various other forms of Third Man.

But I absolutely agree you should do whatever you can to make sure the area you are moving too is for you. That is most important. Then find the house.

This is excellent advice. I know having to move twice is a pain, but getting stuck in a shitty neighborhood is a bigger pain.

It's also very useful to tag along with the inspector while having a potential purchase inspected. You can ask questions and get a lot more information than you do just from reading a report.

The written report may say something like "The furnace is old", which might put you off from buying, but in-person with the inspector, he might say something like "Yeah, the furnace is kind of old, but it seems to be running fine, and I've seen this model a lot older in other houses, so you will probably get another five years before you need to replace it."

Just my $0.02 worth, from having done just this a couple of times.

Personally, I would never consider buying a house I had not walked through, and driven around the neighborhood.

We agreed on a date based on the fact wife and I would be moving from Colorado to Idaho.

165 Erika Kirk simply could not be allowed to become a positive figure of any kind - the awfulness that befell her through her husband's death gave her far too much true victimhood and potential power. So certain other real powers decided to make her "controversial" - in practically the only way possible - by using pieces that were already in place, and possibly her own real imperfections - to do it. It's sickening when you can see what's happening. Truly sickening. And maddening. They didn't even have to sacrifice any known important leftists or Democrats to do this to this *woman*.

Meaning these powers gave up absolutely nothing tangible and they get to seemingly just will certain things into existence. "Controversy" where a tragic widow stands. Bastards.

Ok, I will then.

It was at the Eastern MO Correctional Center in Bonne Terre, MO. I think it was around 2002.

I attended only because the victim's mother asked me to go with her. She and I had become close friends.

The guest of honor was under two different death sentences for 2 different murders. He had raped and murdered a 7-yr-old girl & left her body in a trash dumpster. Then he raped and murdered a severely handicapped teenage girl. She had lived in a building where he was the custodian.

The festivities had been scheduled for 10pm. About ten, the warden came into the room where the witnesses were sand told us a federal judge had stayed the execution. He asked us to wait if we could, in case the stay was lifted. At 2AM, he came back in & tols us the stay HAD been lifted and that the execution would proceed almost immediately.

(I'm going to. continue this post below, because I don't want to exceed the space allowed for a single post.)

176 execution Part II (post 167 continued):

The execution was by lethal injection. The witnesses were seated on folding metal chairs, in the prison gym.

The first thing we saw was a small "stage," with the. curtain drawn, so we couldn't see the man.

After a very short time, the curtain was opened & there was the condemned man, already hooked up to the intravenous injection equipment. He was VERY heavily strapped down

The warden nodded to someone we couldn't see, and the execution began. The man was NOT asked for last words. That had been done earlier in the evening, and he had said he had nothing to say.

He coughed a couple of times and then began to snore.

After maybe 7 minutes, the warden told us the execution had been completed and that the man was dead.

Dad was a reporter for the Salem Capitol Journal who witnessed the last gas chamber execution in the state of Oregon. He also got a tour of the "fatal chamber" and an explanation of the mechanics the day before, in a tour provided by the Warden of the state pen. While the guide had his back turned Dad had his photographer take a picture of him seated on the execution chair -- as one does.
Mom wouldn't let him hang it anywhere in the house, so he hung it on the door of the fruit room in the back shed.

To understand the complexities of climate, we should stop gazing up at the sky, but look down into the oceanic abyss.

Modern surface temperatures are an echo from the past. The Earth is an ocean planet, driven by a pulsating 1,000-year conveyor belt known as Thermohaline Circulation.

We are witnessing a planetary memory in the oceans operating on a scale humans struggle to imagine — where deep currents are only now responding to thermal signals set in motion during the Roman Warm Period (250 BC–400 AD).

211 It’s hard to imagine the scene at executions not just in the 19th century but back through history. There would be huge crowds of everybody crowding to watch, whooping and hollering. Anf in Olde England, often they’d hang 3 or 4 malefactors at a time. They’d drive them up to the gallows in a cart, throw a rope around their necks, and then whack the mule and pull the cart out from under them, leaving them dangling and kicking while the crowed jeered and laughed.

214 The top 3.5 meters of the oceans hold the same heat capacity as the entire global atmosphere. The 3,700 meters below, is the Earth’s thermal vault of all retained heat energy. Oceanic inertia - or momentum - smooths out atmospheric hot and cold spikes.

The oceans absorb and retain 90% of the system's excess heat while the atmosphere is simply a gaseous envelope, thin and reactive, largely a passenger on the back of the massive oceanic flywheel.

The oceans rule from their silent depths.

Interesting story that. We were the only house that had a food storage area called the Fruit Room. I never knew why it was called that instead of a pantry.
Fruit room is an old term for the pantry.
My Great Grandparents were from Scotland, so I figured that was where it came from, but my step sister pointed out that my step-mom (Mom) always called it a fruit room, even in the house they had before she married my Dad, and as far as we can tell it was from HER father in law, who was her first husband's step-father, who was a farmer from England who started a milk herd in Oregon.

• 100° in LA, MA, NC, and UT
• 101° in AL, SC, TX, and VT
• 102° in DE and GA
• 103° in CT and TN
• 104° in AZ, AR, MS, and MT

This, of course, was just weather.

230 Hung a sharpening jib on the mower blades today, and did a recut on the south ditch that I mowed yesterday. Vast improvement. Still a few patches of that Prairie Wool that needed repeat passes, but overall it looks just fine. Did a big area of the south side yard, too, until the mosquitos drove me inside.

Went back to the engine I am working on, cleaned a few parts, used a drill bit to scoop crud out of oil passages. There really wasn't much at all; nowhere near enough to be the cause of all the bearings being starved of oil. Thinking it might have been an air leak on the suction side of the oil pump.

Supposedly an engine rebuilder with 50 years' experience. The nature of the fuckups is not something explainable by simply a lack of knowledge of Studebaker engines. You could fuck up a Ford rebuild the same way.

We had more snow in the 1960's in Southcentral Alaska. Except for last year, when we had even more.

But, some idiot needs to publish or perish, so he came up with a bullshit "science" that isn't, and now he's got tenure. Fuck that shit.

Khamenei’s burial is tonight. It is the end of an era. Regardless of whether there is a war or not, Iran is entering very shaky territory.

The economy is in shambles, there are serious divisions within the leadership, hardliners do not want Iran to reach a deal with the U.S., and anti regime citizens still want revenge for the January massacres.

The fight over Hormuz will likely continue. Iran is not willing to give up control.

Whatever happens next is very messy

Yup... went and looked a couple weeks ago... and somehow the internet Temp record they use, has NO correlation at all to my memories of how hot it has been here in the little town I have live in on and off of 67 years.

June... highest ever 102? I REMEMBER 110... Mom said hottest was 114 day my older Bro was born...

You can't have science at all, without accurate data, and they have decided their money and politics is worth more than accurate data.

But she waved me off in irritation, refused to talk about it further. Unreal. With the Left, it really is Power Uber Alles.
