You Want Fries With That Shake? Cafe

Last night I posted a photo that was clearly AI but somehow I missed it. Lemme try again:

moonandsaturn.jpg

Black Hole
@konstructivizm

It seems incredible, but this is a real photograph!

It was taken on July 24, 2024, just seconds before Saturn disappeared completely behind the lunar disk. The image creates the illusion that Saturn is hovering right above Glushko Crater--a young, 43-kilometer-wide crater near the Moon's western limb. Of course, the Moon is 400,000 kilometers away, whereas Saturn is 1.4 billion kilometers away.

The photo was taken by amateur astronomer Chengcheng Xu in China.

Poor little herding puppy is disrespected by the goats who chase him off, but then he remembers he is the descendant of wolves and asserts his authoritah.

Two paddleboarders save a weakening wallaby who somehow got herself swept out into the open ocean.

Oh my goodness -- a tiny tree kangaroo has an even tinier joey in her pouch.

Hippos sleep underwater but raise their heads and take a breath automatically, without waking up. Or so the fedslop would have you believe.

He knows what he did.

These babies are hungry!

These baby deer are also hungry!

Painting a mural to merge with the foliage.

This will make you misty. Poor shelter dog.

The cat is unimpressed and he's right to be unimpressed.

Saturn won’t look any closer from the Moon than it does from Earth - if it’s any closer at all. It will definitely look clearer and brighter - due to the absence of atmospheric distortion, city lights, and all that - but it won’t appear any larger.

I'm willing to say it's possible. First, we can and do take clear pictures of Saturn from the Earth, so that's not false. The only question is of the proportions between the moon's surface and Saturn, and that's hard to be certain of with such a small portion of the moon shown.

75 Although their horse-like appearance makes them appear friendly and approachable, Kelpies often take their victims into the water, devour them, and throw the entrails to the water's edge.

In its equine form the kelpie is able to extend the length of its back to carry many riders together to a gruesome grave. In one instance, several children were enticed into climbing onto a kelpie's back, while one little boy remained on the shore. He did pet the water horse but his hand stuck to its neck and the lad had to cut it off to free himself. He survived but the other children were carried off and drowned, with only some of their entrails being found later.

92 Evening, Ace, and Cafe layabouts! Got in early from mowing; the Dixon mower threw the traction drive belt and stopped dead in its tracks. Became completely unmowtivated, it did.

So I am sipping on a Caesar, instead.

93 You want fries to go with that shake?

Oh, no thanks, I'm on a diet.

94 I found out the worst time to find out I need new windshield wipers. That's during a rain storm. Fun times driving into work tonight.

96 Hubs started watching The Agency on tv - which I found out is a remake of a French show, The Bureau.
So of course I had to check out the original.
Comparing, it seems almost identical, except in the original the actors seem softer, more human.
In the remake, the characters seem colder. Specially the lead, Fassbender. Maybe Prometheus has permanently scarred him 😁

99 Criminy. This really is the Good News Cafe tonight.

Congrats to everyone who's got awesomeness happening around them.

100 The other thing is the casting in thd remake tried to get actors with very similar looks - except for the love interest.
The love interest in the original French show is an Iranian hottie. In the remake she is a statuesque Ethiopian.

Telescopes are basically huge telephoto lenses. Very narrow field of view, and thin depth of field. This creates a very prominent foreshortening effect. So, Saturn looks very close to the Moon, impossibly close relative to what our own brains and eyes are used to seeing.

You'll see that with telephoto lens. Zoom in on something in the distance, and foreground objects appear much closer to the distant object.

107 When my first grandchild was born, my wife had badly broken her leg in a traffic accident and needed surgery. My other daughter and I waited until Mrs. Wrecks was out of surgery then drove through night from Western Colorado to the Little Apple, Manhattan Kansas, a distance of more than 700 miles, making it just in time.

108 Octopi (or is it Jellyfish?) don’t really have a recognizable genetic lineage with other Erf critters. Could they be alien life forms? They kind of look the part anyhow

Posted by: Common Tater at July 10, 2026 08:50 PM (O0G1y)

109 Saturn won’t look any closer from the Moon than it does from Earth - if it’s any closer at all. It will definitely look clearer and brighter - due to the absence of atmospheric distortion, city lights, and all that - but it won’t appear any larger.
Posted by: HavaTequila at July 10, 2026 08:08 PM (4aDif)

You know how a telephoto lens foreshortens perspective? Well so does a real astronomical telescope, only more so.

120 F*uck ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts.

No one mentioned it in the last thread, so I looked it up. We know commies are performative, fake, and gay, but: "Up The Hearts" is an inspiring docuseries that chronicles the evolution of Portland, Maine’s first-ever professional soccer team. Celebrate the journey of soccer uniting a community like never before, and see what it truly means to “Up The Hearts!”

Other techniques that some object to as "not real" are stacking and compositing. It's real images, just many of them combined. This can reduce noise, enhancing the real signals that are there, and bring foreground and background objects each into better focus.

For very dim stuff like nebula, you need hours and days of exposures night after night, and you can bring incredible detail of stuff that's just dim to see, but it's real information in real light.

126 Well, I didn’t have to pack
Got it all upon my back
Yes, I’m 804.672 kilometers from home …

I’m not a believer particularly in the Mandela Effect.

But I had something weird happen. Bobby Bare, who wrote “500 Miles” was getting on in age and not in the best of health. Periodically I’d check the internet. One day I read that he had died. This did not surprise me, but I thought there would be more news about it or whatever.

Then about a year later I was perusing a music forum site - Steve Hoffman - and by golly, “Bobby Bare Died”. For real this time, I guess. I suppose it was some kind of internet glitch, but it was strange.
