Tech related: I was advised the other morning that it's probably a good idea to avoid charging one's phone over 85%. What I've noticed while trying to follow that plan is that the phone, an Android, does not run down the battery as fast -- as if, charged to 100%, it begins to roll down a steep cliff (97% at 10 pm, 88% at 5 am). Whereas if I leave it at the 88 instead of recharging to 100 first thing in the morning, the battery % decreases more gradually -- a less steep cliff.

This afternoon we hope to get a kitten at the house with the big sign that said "Free kittens". I haven't seen one of those in years. I guess people either get their animals spayed or go the the animal rescue places where the interview and form work is a little lesser version of adopting a baby.

Last night we watched Night and Day, the 1946 biopic of Cole Porter with Cary Grant and Alexis Smith, and a very young Jane Wyman. It follows some of the actual bones of Porter's life: born in Indiana, writing songs at Yale, friendship with professor and later producer and actor Monty Woolley (who plays himself with verve), his marriage to the woman who remained his companion until her death, his leg injuries that put him in a wheelchair, etc.

If it's an android device, check for the "Battery Saver" option. If on, it starts doing stuff to try to save battery lower than 90% charge, but above that it won't activate, which would account for the first 10% going faster than the remaining 90%. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 08, 2026 *** Not much lesser, Fen. I hear tell they send somebody over to the prospective adopter's house to check out the future home environment, ask for references, etc. On one level it's good to see -- they don't want an animal going to a bad home -- but it's damned intrusive. The shelter in Vicksburg, MS, where I adopted Stirling did ask for a vet reference, so they could be sure I was the type to see to my past cats' medical needs. That done, everything was fine. On the other hand, the lady who sold little Dagny to me already knew me from two past adoptions, so we met halfway between her home and mine (in the parking lot of a truck stop, of all places) and took care of everything right there. @32/Wolfus: You're welcome! I don't remember mentioning this option before, but I'm also leaning really hard on the coffee this morning.
Me, I just throw devices on charge overnight and unplug them in the morning. Charging circuits in the devices with USB-C connectors are supposed to prevent the battery from being overcharged, and as far as I can tell, they do a good job of that. I was thinking to have breakfast now, then go over to the nearby mall to try working out in the A/C. Not being sure they will frown on my 1/3 trotting as opposed to purely walking, I'm reluctant to wait until 9:45. Temps and heat index are a bit lower than a week ago -- so I could do my usual mile now, then have the morning free to work on some writing.
Tomorrow, haircut, but that's not until ten. I could work out the same way tomorrow, then go with Linda to the mall to walk on Friday. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 08, 2026 05:52 AM (wzUl9) 37
@36/Wolfus: Go before the stores open. Stores won't care if you're exercising when there are no customers for you to potentially impede or interfere with.

How did your video tour go? Posted by: Tuna at July 08, 2026 *** Po'ly. (Poorly, in General American.) The agent's phone struggled to stay connected, so we had a hard time seeing anything. The house looks okay -- more on that in a minute -- but the agent warned me about the area. "I legally can't tell you if a neighborhood is good or bad . . . but there was a guy outside here screaming his head off in broad daylight." "I don't have to move 800 miles for that," I said, "I can get that right here!" The agent agreed he was not comfortable in the area, and we left it at that. Pawn here was kind enough to offer some insights based on the Realtor pics, and the place might need more work than it appeared to. So the hunt continues. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at July 08, 2026 *** Right; I was going to get there at ten, and the stores, most, don't open until eleven. I just envision some officious Karen in a "security" uniform, the type who'd have rousted you in 2021 about wearing a face diaper, reading me the riot act about what she calls "running." I haven't had to request to come to the house.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 08, 2026 *** Maybe it's only local -- the inhabitants around here don't care for their children, let alone their pets -- or maybe it was a procedure the SPCA and other shelters don't do any more. *sighs* x.com is now insisting that you log in if you try to click the "play" icon on a user's individual post with a video. This used to work a few days ago.
So I've been using xcancel.com to get around that, but now it's having problems where it just loops a bunch of times trying to get access to the post (and its comments) and then if it loops too long, I get locked out with a "429 Too Many Requests" error, and any subsequent attempt to access xcancel.com gets that error as well (at least for a while, I'm not sure how long I'm locked out.) I updated all my add-ons in Firefox, and then whitelisted xcancel.com in uBlock Origin, but it's still doing it. Don't know if it's a problem on their end or mine. All this was fine a few days ago. I just want to watch cute cat videos. *shakes fist at technology* Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at July 08, 2026 06:09 AM (O7YUW) 44
