USA got eliminated from the World Cup? Not so fast!

-----

The Babylon Bee is a national treasure

HMqC4k3WAAAU6yy.jpg

-----

Cashing in on the World Cup

I'm a veteran who runs a flag business. We were blindsided by World Cup demand, and sales are up 130%

Our flag sales are normally almost entirely US, state, and military flags. So when we started getting more and more inquiries about world flags during our offseason in January and February, I knew something was up.

Then I started putting it all together. The World Cup was coming, and it was about to change our business.

***

When we took over, our goal was simply to survive those first few months and build out the e-commerce side of the business. We certainly weren't looking ahead to the World Cup or America's 250th birthday, but we've definitely benefited from some tailwinds.

***

The World Cup, combined with America's 250th anniversary, has supercharged our business. We've seen tremendous national growth, and these events have definitely moved the needle for us. We've been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time.

Good ol' capitalism. Gotta love it!

Any other map and highway nerds out there?

70 Years of the Interstate: How the U.S. Highway System Built the America We Know

Doof-Interstate-System-Turns-70.jpg

Seventy years ago, on June 29, 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, aka the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act, into law. It created the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, better known as the Interstate Highway System. Or, simply, “the Interstate.” Ike signed the bill, along with 26 others that day, from a hospital bed at Walter Reed after an intestinal infection and operation. No press. No photographers. His press secretary was there to witness the signing, and that’s it. It was a shrug-worthy opening ceremony for what would become this country’s largest-ever public works project as well as an agent of almost immeasurable cultural, economic, and physical change.

Aside from being a marvel of civil engineering, the Interstates created jobs and boosted the economy. They made travel easier and more accessible. They made shipping more efficient. They also brought added safety compared to other highways. But they also screwed a lot of people over. Small towns bypassed by new Interstate routes withered and died. According to Department of Transportation estimates, Interstate construction displaced over a million Americans and destroyed 475,000 homes.

***

When the original 1916 Federal Highway Aid Act expired, the Federal Highway Aid Act of 1921 superseded it. The ’21 bill further consolidated the federal/state partnership, allowing states to conduct their own road-building projects, albeit to federal standards, with $75M allocated annually for the construction of a national road grid of interconnected “primary highways.” The “later [1956] interstate highway bill… would not have been possible, or necessary” without the 1921 bill, according to Swift.

By 1921, the Office of Road Inquiry had grown into the Bureau of Public Roads. Its head, Thomas MacDonald, wanted a better understanding of the nation’s road system, not just for public use but for military use. That year, he commissioned the Army to produce a map of public roads that were useful for interstate travel as well as for defense. The so-called “Pershing Map,” after the general who produced it, included 78,000 miles of public roads and proved to be an important tool in later planning for the Interstate system.

Another important step in the growing road network was the United States Numbered Highway System, first designated 100 years ago in 1926. Interstate trails and named highways had been spreading across the country, but with no uniformity and spotty maintenance. The Numbered Highway System addressed this by creating the “U.S. Routes,” with numbers instead of names, identified by a recognizable white-and-black shield. North-south routes were to feature odd numbers, with the lowest number starting on the East Coast and the most significant routes ending in “1” or “5.” East-west routes featured even numbers, with the lowest number starting on the northern border and primary routes ending in “0.” Despite the name “U.S. Routes,” these roads were built and are maintained at the state level. By the end of the 1920s, the Bureau had invested three-quarters of a billion dollars in road building and improvement, paving or resurfacing over 90,000 miles of highway, according to Spencer Headworth’s book Rules of the Road.

Very long article but fascinating for aforementioned map / highways nerds like me. Check it out and catch me at the next MoMe so we can discuss this kin of stuff!

18 Ike was a young lieutenant-colonel when he was tasked to take a road trip - a war game mobility exercise to use trucks across the continental United States in 1919. The scenario was that railroads wouldn’t be available, I guess.

It was a huge debacle, because the roads were shit. Took 62 days. Eisenhower always remembered that.

30 COL Eisenhower also played a prominent role as Chief of Staff for the Blue Army (Third Army) under Lieutenant General Krueger during the Louisiana Maneuvers. These exercises exposed both talent (Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley) and exposed weaknesses in training, equipment, and transportation. Eisenhower’s performance there lead to his assignment to the War Plans Division.

We always, since before the plandemic, have food and stuff that will probably be inherited by our sons. But not 2wks of water.

Does anyone know anything about this or is someone paranoid...say because we are bombing Iran again?

Did I miss something? Have I been in a coma with McConnell?

I did pray to keep our country and crowds safe on the 4th, as jihad's like dates. Unaware of anything else. I should have enough gin to last me...

You'd have to assume that the Iranians were holding back while we killed their leadership. And, if this spectacular attack could only be ready now, and not while we were making lists and checking them twice, why didn't they hit the crowds on the Fourth?

Anything is possible, head on a swivel first, last, and all times in between. However, were not dealing with Bond villains. The IRGC is gangsters and should be dealt with as such.

88 Is there a secret message with the musical selections this evening....there should be, because it fits the 2018 Horizon Air Bombardier Q400 incident.

Jet Airliner- Some guy named Richard Russell hopped in a Horizon Air De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 and took it up at Seattle-Tacoma Airport.

Joy Ride- Russell few around for about 70 minutes having a good old time. He told traffic control he wanted to see what the plane could do. He even completed a barrel roll.

Screaming in the night- Eventually Russell had his fill and flew it into Ketron Island. This all took place after 8pm....There wasn't a scream of fear, but more of excitement as Russel crashed head on into the island.

(If there is no secret message in the song picks, I'm going to suggest a glitch in the matrix, because this event fit perfectly. I would have thrown in "Roll Out the Barrel" drinking song as the third selection, however commemorate this idiot's successful barrel roll in a passenger plane without any flying experience)

120 Alaska Airlines, oh yeah the 727 crash.

To cut costs they tripled inspection time on the jackscrew used to move the t-tail. Plane took off from Mexico and in flight the jackscrew malfunctioned freezing the t-tail. The pilots managed to recover, declare an emergency, and start flying to land it. But they decided to troubleshoot the issue further. What resulted was them completely popping the cap on the jackscrew and the 727 plummeted into the Pacific killing everyone.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean no one is actually out to get you.

Two weeks of water is 2 of those big cases of bottled water, if you ration. I would also have a box of the marine water pouches (like Capri Sun juice pouches) on hand - you can punch a small hole in them and wash wounds, clean your hands, etc. Then, if a semi-predictable disaster (like a hurricane) is coming, you fill up the tub and use a couple of gallon jugs (cut them so they have a decent opening but you still have a handle) to scoop water out for washing things or flushing your toilet. You can also use the drain valve on your water heater (turn off the heat source before doing this) for however many gallons the tank holds (40-50 gal is most common).

There are more "prepper" things to do, but those are good for non-TEOTWAWKI things.

it is always good to keep some extra on hand. I suggest at the very least a 5 gallon bucket of rice, a 5 gallon bucket of beans or lentils, and one of those big jars of coconut oil.
Once you start getting into a propane stove, or cans of Spam, and from there a year's supply of everything, you are now prepping and considering getting half a dozen chickens.

I made jam today. Cherry jam that I am afraid did not gel correctly because I didn't follow the recipe. This time it bit me.

Posted by: Count de Monet at July 07, 2026 11:03 PM (wVcYX)

It may have darkened just from cooking in the kitchen. I have seen cabinets darken/yellow the same way. In the earlier 80's the better dishwashers used to come with different color panels, because they all had trim kits. You got 2 panels with a different color on each side. It was white, almond, black, and the 4th color was usually a throwback. Usually harvest gold. The 4th color was actually a crap shoot, it could have been that brown, or avocado, or harvest gold, but usually harvest gold. You pop the stainless trim off the side, slide out the panels, and just use what color you wanted. Usually people went with the almond, that was the "in" color at the time.

It was like that until I moved out. Nothing better than doing nice kitchens every day, vanquishing the horrible colors, and then coming home to it. Of course they finally redid the kitchen again a few years after I moved out. I busted my fathers balls every day about that kitchen. 202 Well, I got that engine that I was working on torn down. All the main bearings are wiped out, except for #4, and it shows signs of oil starvation. The big shocka was #3 main bearing cap was installed improperly, hanging up on the lip of the crankcase web, but tightened down nevertheless. Result: end of cast-iron bearing cap all spread and cracked in two places. That may well have been the genesis of the bearing failure. Regardless, it is 100% certain proof that the previous "rebuilder" fucked up, big time. There is no excuse for that. Even if it happened by accident, a good shop would say, "Oh shit!", and get another main cap, line-hone it, and start over. Sending it out that way borders on criminal, IMHO.

230 The U.S. has launched a significantly expanded wave of airstrikes on Iran that is four to five times larger than the strikes carried out 10 days ago, a U.S. official told Axios. The official said the operation is expected to continue for hours.

Fight to win with everything you got, or don’t fight.
I fear that Trump is finding out the hard way how forever wars get started.

If the goal of your fighting is just to negotiate a better ceasefire, you’re in a forever war.

Amen. I appreciate it and she does too. It changes you for sure, I don't know how it wouldn't. Very sad to watch especially for someone like her who was always this little firecracker - uncontainable - but like I said she is doing better these days. Lots of prayer, a little therapy, and many days just forcing herself to put one foot in front of the other. And she laughs a lot because I'm such a funny guy.

235 Well, I got that engine that I was working on torn down.

This is pretty much how Iraq went. Big impressive stomping of their regular army in 1991 which was halted because the objectives didn't include *too much* winning.

Followed by a decade of performative airstrikes not to so much change the situation, but remind Saddam that we could do more if we could be bothered in hopes that his behavior would improve. It naturally didn't since the force used was never particularly threatening to him or his hold on power.

The main difference now is that we're enforcing a no sail zone rather than a no fly zone. And while we whacked the ayatollah, his replacements don't seem to feel threatened (or don't care because their 72 virgins are better than they have now). And instead of Kurds getting massacred while we 'manage' the situation rather than win it, it's Persians.

241 You can also use the drain valve on your water heater (turn off the heat source before doing this) for however many gallons the tank holds (40-50 gal is most common).
———

One thing to keep in mind, in certain scenarios loss of water mains pressure will result in the 40 or 80 gallons of water in the heater can be sucked out and back into the mains. At the first inkling of trouble shutoff or close the water main valve at the service entrance.

Well, I have a bit of a conundrum here. To do it right would entail grinding another used crank ( I have a few.), resize some other used rods, bore cylinders out .020, and find and install .020 over pistons and rings. We are already over a thousand dollars here in parts and shop services. Or go the "farmer fix" route. Pick a used crank that will Plastigage within spec with new bearing shells. Pick six rods that haven't been beat up; plastigage the rod bearings too. Hone the cylinders with dingleberry hone. Re-use the existing pistons, which have only 45000 miles on them. New cam bearings, because they are wiped. Engine might only be good for another 20-30000 miles. He will never ever drive it that much in his lifetime. I doubt he has averaged a hundred miles per year on it since he has owned it.

Used to see tractor type or shortbed trailers with a piece of chain purposefully dragging for electrical grounding purposes. They must use something different now?

We have plenty of dried food, etc, yada. I would need water but that's it.

I think? I have figured out her panic, possibly. The explosive diarrhea from a parasite in some states from bagged lettuce, cilantro, fruit that is not washed. It doesn't kill you but horrific (so I just read). A parasite, or this one, is not spread person-to-person.

Otherwise I am clueless why she thinks there will be "martial law." We were not under martial law with covid that I can recall. I guess if she says "parasite" from unknown sources I will say ok vs the difference of a person-to-person virus or the plague.

If it is due to the news of diarrhea, well, freak out, I guess. I don't buy bagged lettuce since we found a slug in a bag about 25yrs ago. Nasty!

They have rubber straps now, made of (slightly) conductive rubber, sufficient to drain of static electricity. And I think tires now are also slightly conductive, so static buildup is less likely.

I would think if the pistons measure good and the bores are good, just go with the dingleberry hone. As far as the crank goes, if you find one within spec you can go with a slight hand polish and do the matching bearings. I call shit like this rewinding the clock. It might not be factory new, but it rewinds the clock a little.

But water is a thing. If you measure every drop of water you use in a day - it is amazing. That gallon a day per person is raw, disciplined, controlled usage. We use a lot of water.

263 ChristyBrinkley asked "why 2 weeks" as the specific recommendation for water storage.

I think, oddly enough, most of the "standard" recommendations for regular people for food storage, water storage, and the like, were developed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which "strongly" recommends to their members to have a years supply of food on hand. They have extensive guides on food storage, and the government, in a rare case of having brains, said, essentially, "these are better than anything we can dig up" and essentially borrowed them/repurposed them. The Church has very detailed guidelines on what to store, how to store it, and how to actually build this 1 year supply so it's not "go out and buy 3 tons of flour" which no one can do. The water recommendation is actually 1 gallon per person per day for two weeks. Then various water purification things for after that.

And pretty much everyone has just copied the Church, because it's good advice and a good baseline that is achievable by most folks. Sure, the hardcore "preppers" will say you need more, like ten years in your massive underground bunker, but for regular people, the 2 weeks is a good start / goal.

I simply wanted to know what triggered her panic today. She said to prepare for possible martial law. I nicely asked why and she has not given me a reason.

My husband has no idea, either, and we figure something triggered her and I will, for tonight, blame her possible ignorance on a parasite that's in the news.

It is not unusual to have this in the summer months, I read. Apparently does not show up for weeks, which is gross to think about, and (so far) is not killing people nor person-to-person infections.

I got Salmonella 25yrs ago from a salad and I rarely eat salads at restaurants. My husband grows lettuce hydroponically and that seems to be fine (he washes it, which apparently is a novel idea in the twenty something years of bagged lettuces). The End.

If I find out something otherwise causing her panic I will report. It was weird to read and she may be a confused alarmist.
