27 Gorky was born in what is today Turkey, near Lake VAn. He fled the Armenian genocide in 1915, and arrived in the US in 1920. He was born "Vostanik Adoian,' but changed his name after getting here to "Arshile Gorky," claiming to be related to teh Russian writer Maxim Gorky.

"In 1935, Gorky became one of the first artists employed by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project."

Explains so much.

30 This painting is a disaster. Must be modern art… I have no idea what the artist is trying to depict. It could be that Big Bang Theory episode where Leonard and Penny decide to use paint and a large canvass where they roll and while having sex. This painting looks like their result (which they weren’t very proud of BTW)

42 All seriousness aside, this is an interesting painting to pick apart.

Over to the left, there's a dog's head, looking kind of like Mickey Mouse's Goofy with a party hat on. A cartoonish toucan-like creature is just to Goofy's right, and a poached egg partly hiding a Mardi Gras mask. And in front of the skull there is something that reminds me of a vulture.

Just below the toucan is a human figure that looks like the Broadway actress of the '50s and '60s, Tammy Grimes.

See? Lotsa fun!

95 The Liver is the Cock's Comb, 1944
Arshile Gorky

The ambiguous title merges visceral bodily organs with agricultural imagery to symbolize passion, the artist's unconscious, and themes of male fertility and vanity. 🙄

Wikipedia, "Along with Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning, Gorky has been hailed as one of the most powerful American painters of the 20th century. Gorky's experience as a survivor of the Armenian genocide had a crucial influence on his work...."

In 1908, his father emigrated to the United States to avoid the draft, leaving his family behind in the town of Van.[4] In 1915, Gorky fled Van amidst the Armenian genocide and escaped with his mother and three sisters into Russian-controlled territory. In the aftermath of the genocide, his mother died of starvation in Yerevan in 1919. Arriving in America in 1920, at the age of 16, Gorky was reunited with his father, but they never grew close.[5]

In 1935, Gorky became one of the first artists employed by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project.

On July 21, 1948, after telling a neighbor and one of his students that he planned to commit suicide, Gorky was found hanged in his studio.

Socialist realism is a Marxist-Leninist aesthetic doctrine that mandated art, literature, and music to glorify the socialist state, promote the proletariat, and celebrate communist ideals. Enforced by Joseph Stalin, it required an optimistic, heroic portrayal of everyday Soviet life while strictly banning pessimistic or critical elements.

Let's see, 20th century artists: Maxfield Parrish, NC Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, the paintings and pencil drawings by Alan Lee for LOTR. I'll include JRR Tolkien's own art he did for his writings. I'm sure there were a couple of others worth looking at.

I think it's dumb, but here's the rationale: IU measures effect not quantity. Since the same vitamin from different sources (i.e., natural vs. synthetic) have different potency, different weights can yield the same IU, and this is supposedly "handy" for people.

I would prefer the bottle to say "take thus many mcg, 2x daily" because that's simpler for my brain to understand quickly.

208 I have no idea what shit for brains wrote that. The alarming, and disgusting, part is they might have been serious.

The etymology of “coxcomb” traces back to the 14th century, derived from “cockscomb,” a term used to describe the fleshy crest on a rooster’s head. In Elizabethan England, this imagery became associated with jesters and fools, not merely because of their humorous antics but because of their significant role in revealing truths through absurdity.

Ice Cube offered her $10m to join his 3 on 3 league. I wonder if that offer is still on the table.

She's responsible for a 300+% increase in all things WNBA. She should throw a punch to the jaw of the next bitch to flagrant foul her, take her jersey off, chuck it into the stands, then saunter off the court with both birds flying at all the players in the arena.

A green dildo flying out of the gallery and hitting a congresscritter in the face would be hilarious.

And what has he done in the Senate during his time there ?

Obstructed any progress from our side. Don't discount that.

300 Cooper is polling similarly to Cunningham in 2020.

The more time goes on, the more I'm convinced that Cooper is actually the underdog.

(registration changes, lingering issues with Cooper's governorship around Helene and Ilyana, polling issues in summer in NC in particular)

======
I have no feel for that particular race as NC has always been a state hard to figure for Senate races but often enough the GOP candidate somehow scrapes by.

#BREAKING: Officials in Houston TX are PANICKING after TWO MORE Flock cameras were chopped down yesterday.

This makes 4 Flock cams destroyed in 3 days.

Allegedly, the public is sending hundreds of tips saying things like, "the cameras are succumbing to heat exhaustion..."

Well, he decided to run jointly with Keisha Lance Bottoms running for governor and I think that is because some consultants are whispering in his ears about a national run in 2028. He has went all in on the progressive items these last couple of months after being radio silent for most of his term.

Joker in the deck is the Fulton County cheat machine being investigated for the 2020 election including his shocking win in the runoff. Perdue dropped just below 50 percent when all was done and suddenly Ossoff blows by him in the runoff.

313 DJT confirming the F-35 deal with Turkey raised an eyebrow.

DJT affirming friendly relations with Syria and meeting with its "ex"-terrorist leader raised the other one.

Turkey borders Iran and is a NATO member.

Syria has port facilities that can handle oil tankers for any petroleum products sent by pipeline from SA, Kuwait, Iraq and the Emirates. It also has an extensive border with Lebanon.

These two deals are bad news for the Persians.

Look, she's already hated by the players and gets clobbered every game. She should trash talk the players mercilessly.

"hey, nice airball. With that shooting, you'll be turning tricks by fall."

"I can't believe I let you fly private."
