30 Repeat from this morning:

I would like to acknowledge that the land we now occupy once belonged to His Majesty the King of England, but he and the parliament that runs his government started acting like a bunch of douchecanoes, so we kicked their asses out and started running things ourselves.

It all worked out for the best, for us, and humanity as a whole.

If you want it back, too freakin' bad, it's ours now.

I would imagine many felt homesick for our freedoms, food, free refils, smiles, and AC when they got back to the UK and Europe.

I'd like to see our government try to confiscate A/C.

Happy 250th Birthday, Moron's and 'ettes. Many wish they were us.

Searched for auto repair shops in the area and somehow came up with a heavy equipment repair shop. They told us to come on over. So we come on over.

Like 5 guys come out to see what's up, they take the trailer off the truck, pick the boat and trailer up with a ginormous forklift, and change the tire like an Indy pit crew. Charged us $30. And gave us coffee cups with their logo.

Car belongs to a friend of many years' standing. Only has about 45000 miles on it. He wanted to get the engine resealed to cure oil leaks. Took it to a guy we both know and trust. It ran a few miles, lost oil pressure, and hammered out the bearings. He took it to another shop; guy said the first put a wrong oil filter on it (not convinced of that), rebuilt engine to the tune of $6000. Ran for a few months, lost oil pressure, and began to knock. Now it is here. One thing I will be looking for is a missing fiber disc check valve in the oil filter adapter. One of those falling out could cause a total loss of oil pressure.

My wife has a rule. I am not allowed to be left unsupervised in public for more than twenty minutes. I was in line at a garden center with a 50 pound bag of bird seed. A woman asked if I had a lot of birds. I said no, it was for a holistic cleanse I was trying. High protein. Great for hair. I said I lost 30 pounds last summer but ended up in the emergency room for two weeks. She gasped and asked if I got a parasite. I said no, I was perched on a telephone pole trying to sleep and a hawk knocked me off. Fell forty feet. She froze. My wife came back from the bathroom, saw her face, grabbed my arm and dragged me out. She told the woman I was kidding. This is why we can't have nice things. Worth every second.

Once, riding my bike on the Potomac trail that goes by the Pentagon and National Airport. Started at high point in DC, roughly. Before I got to the airport - chills. Declining energy. Oh well. Walked the bike home, stopping for a cold drink somewhere along the way.

Second time, another blazing August day, temp near 100. Decided to get in 9 holes at Hains Point (golf course I guess Trump is changing). Teed off on the 3rd. Walking up the fairway ..... chills. Headache (never, ever have headaches). Oh well. Cooled off in the clubhouse. Contractor running the place at the time was a hockey acquaintance, so unlimited refills.

Next day left on a work trip around the world (returning to US in Anchorage, Alaska Air served Russian far east back then). Have never pushed my luck since.

Those Milankovitch cycles are very long compared to our human scales. All of recorded history is a but fraction of the shortest of those cycles. However, in a way, you can see their effects every so slightly on a human scale.

The Erf's axial tilt has decreased since I was I born in 1967 to make the length of the day 3 seconds shorter on the summer solstice. And to make the winter solstice 4 seconds longer.

And precession of perihelion works out to about 1 day per 58 years. Perihelion and aphelion occur about 1 day later since I was born.

There are several of these based on different "proxies". Then Greenland ice core use the O-18 to O-16 ratios. Water with O18 is a different sort of "heavy water" (and just imagine all the different combinations with H and D vs the O isotopes).

O-18 water's evaporates less and condenses quicker the colder it gets. So, when it's a colder year, less O18 waters gets deposited, and less O18 leaves the oceans. There's some way they can see the variation in O18 levels at the surface over time, too.

Anyway, all those different proxies look about the same over the Holocene (and all show the dramatic Younger Dryas event), but they will differ on the peaks a little bit.

But all show a peak at around 7000 yrs ago, the Holocene Climate Optimum. The Greenland cores show the Roman period was about as warm. Others will show a local peak then, but not as much as the 7K year one.

So, we can say we've been cooler and no warmer than that over the whole Holocene till now. And we're cooler now at present than any of the peaks.

Over hundreds of millions of years, Erf oscillates between "greenhouse" and "icehouse" states. Guess what we're in now, and have been for a long time. Icehouse state. During an icehouse, we have polar ice caps. During Greenhouse, no polar ice at all.

Antarctica has been at the south pole for a long time, but not always covered in ice. During the last greenhouse state, the temperature there was nice and warm. Life, plant and animal thrived.

And they thrived under polar night and day conditions. I would love to see that. Just how the heck everything was adapted to midnight sun, with no night, and then near 6 months of polar night.

Turns the diurnal cycle on its head. I don't think they know much about, other than it existed. Plant and animal life in warm temperatures under those polar night/day conditions.

"Anatomically modern humans" go back to at least 300K years. See the "Million year old human skull" for something that might push that way back, and rewrite the whole timeline.

So, we'll take the low figure, 300,000 years. We've been around that long, and only during the last 5000 did we actually do anything other than run around like primitives?

I thanked him when it was published, according to the Official Authorities, as "the immortal verses of our National Poet".

"Basz meg, Peter, azert en mar immortalis is!"

Up until comment 399, I thought that Taylor S should've chosen Las Vegas over NYC. The Strip IS expensiver, but Henderson ...

But Publius correctly mentions that the event will generate a lot of ... paid ... work for the NYPD, stressing the entire force unnecessarily ...

... but, it also puts a big hurt on Mamdani's budget(s).

Where will Big M get the money? Tax the wealthy of MYC even more? At last some of them deserve i. Ask Mama H, up in Albany, for cash? How has that worked out before. Asking The Donald? Hah.

My guess is that a bunch of Big M's Socialist Paradise Programs will get erased from his promises.
