Greetings Horde!

Hi! I am the Magna Carta. You might remember me from such classics as "The Devil Went down to Runnymede" and "King John is a Big Fat Poopyhead." Thanks for letting me guest post for tonight's ONT!

While the July 4th holiday (rightly) focuses on the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights, the American story traces some of its roots back to me. You're welcome!

Where to start? The beginning of course...

Did you know that I was not originally called the Magna Carta? At the time (1215), I was known as the "Charter of Liberties" (or the "Charter of Runnymede" named after the location of agreement). I was not developed as a major overhaul to the English government or society. I was simply a written confirmation of rights and customs to correct abuses.

England was essentially a feudal system. Nobles and barons were granted estates (aka "huge tracts of land") by the Crown in exchange for loyalty, income and military personnel when required. Lords, knights and vassals gave loyalty in exchange for smaller protection and land. Ultimately, the King sat at the top of the pyramid to manage the country.

England was not a peaceful utopia before the Charter was signed but it operated through a system of laws, traditions and cultural expectations.

By custom, the King was expected to honor the norms but what happens if the King abuses his power and authority? What happens if the King bends or breaks the expected rules of behavior? In many cases, nothing. The King's power was absolute. There was no recourse short of violence and rebellion.

King John of England tested those limits. He was King of England from 1199 until his death in 1216 and spent most of that time fighting over Normandy with France. He spent a lot, raised taxes and fees, unilaterally changed prior agreements, confiscated land from barons that could no longer pay, and imprisoned political enemies. He was also deeply suspicious of any barons that had any money or power (i.e., most of them). He was a poopyhead.

At some point, the barons had enough and threatened revolt. Tensions grew over several years until June 1215 when I was born. King John and the barons met at Runnymede, a neutral site between Windsor Castle and Staines-upon-Thames. (Staines? What an unfortunate name.) Five days of mediation resulted in 63 clauses written in Latin that addressed the barons' grievances.

Among other things, I set limits on feudal payments, fair inheritance rules, merchant rights and even contained a redress mechanism for working out future disagreements. Perhaps most noteworthy are my Clauses 39 and 40 where I declared that no free man shall be seized, imprisoned, or stripped of rights "except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land," and that justice would not be sold, denied, or delayed to anyone. Pretty good, huh?

I attempted to resolve a power struggle in a feudal country. (Good luck, right!?) I did not overhaul rights and privileges for the entire country or everyone in the population - just the relationship between the barons and the crown. I did not contain new political philosophy and my clauses were not unprecedented. I was a pragmatic compromise. I was an attempt at a peace treaty. The barons renewed oaths of loyalty and copies of the charter were formally issued.

As you might imagine, nobody was happy with me and I failed. Bummer. Neither side trusted the other. The King asked the Pope to reject the deal (which he did). Less than three months after I was born, the First Barons' War erupted. King John died in October 1216, leaving nine year old Henry III as his heir and the war continued.

While I failed, my language was carried into other treaties and attempts at resolving tension between the crown and the barons. The First Barons' War came to an end with the Treaty of Lambeth in September 1217. Subsequently, the Charter of the Forest was issued in November 1217. It was considered an evolutionary complement to the 1215 Charter of Liberties. Having trouble keeping track of the charters? You're not the only one. This is where the Magna Carta name was born and applied to the June 1215 Charter of Liberties to avoid confusing them.

In 1225, King Henry III re-issued and re-affirmed the charter primarily to placate barons who were asked to finance more military action in France. The 1225 affirmation was arguably more voluntary and definitive than the 1215 agreement which gave it strength. Magna Carta principles had staying power but became a bargaining chip for the next several decades. It gave the barons leverage (even if it was cited or ignored when convenient). King Edward I reissued the 1225 charters in 1297 in return for - you guessed it - a new tax.

Over the centuries, the narrow, technical clauses of the Magna Carta were largely superseded as obsolete, but the spirit and key legal principles lived on and shaped English (and common law) traditions far beyond the original text.

So which document is the real "Magna Carta"? All of them - but only the 1215 is the original. Subsequent re-issues carried the same name, so knowing the date is important.

How many original "Magna Cartas" exist today? Depends which version you're asking about. Copies were made, but official royal parchment issuance was limited. Consensus is that four each of the 1215, 1225 and 1297 versions remain. (The one on display at the US National Archives is a 1297 vintage.) No wonder people think I have multiple personalities.

I was not perfect but when the American founding fathers declared their independence from England in 1776, they were familiar with my principles. They incorporated my spirit in the drafting of America's birth certificate.

Power has limits. No ruler stands above the law. Legitimate government rests on consent and limits power. Due process. The right to a jury trial. Protection against unreasonable searches. Government exists to secure rights rather than grant them.

Nice to know that what I said in 1215 at Runnymede had enough wisdom and staying power to change history for the better. Now you know.

My theory is that adding the rate we move through space plus the rate we move through time is equal to the speed of light, which is why the faster we move, the more time slows down. (Watch Intersteller for an example of thst in action.)

There is a sizable Bosnian population in south St. Louis. I bet no-one here knew that?

I don't think anyone remembers King John as being anything other than a bad king. I never read, or heard, anybody say of him, "He was the kind king who signed the Magna Carta." His contemporaries called him "John Softsword."

Whenever someone lists the worst kings of England after the Conquest, King John usually qualifies for the top 3, and always for the top 5.

For the title of "worst king," John usually ranks behind only Edward II and Richard III, from what I've read. The others who are considered about as bad were merely weak.

He outlined credit, how credit worked, technically how to get it and manipulate it and discipline your activity to maximize benefit. He hit other things just as critical.

Fun fact, helium was discovered on the sun (hence the name) before it was discovered to exist on earth.

In 1868, some astronomers looking at various spectral lines during an eclipse noticed a line that didn't correspond to any known element on earth.

It wasn't until 1895 that helium was isolated on earth, and determined to be the same element as on the Sun.

Well, on a positive note, if King John wasn't such a brutal piece of human excrement, the Magna Carta never would have been forced upon him by the noble families. As I recall, he pretty much failed at everything he attemped...and left the crown in dire straights financially. In his free time he was executing relatives and alienating the Church if some of the writings are to be believed.

He was one of the best teachers I ever had. Korean war vet, and a LTC in the Wyoming National Guard. Catholic, 13 kids. Was a house painter in the summer months.

Afraid I must disagree profoundly. No British king except Richard III ever arranged the premeditated murder of 2 kids. I'm not receptive to any argument that "some other dude did it." Richard controlled the Tower (the means and opportunity for the murders), and the children represented a prodigious dormant threat only to Richard (hence the motive). Doing journal citations, I had a thought to contact authors to try to cadge reprints from them, the way it used to be done.

I picked an author; we'll call him Vernon. He's at the Imperial College, London. I met him many years ago, a nice English fellow a couple of years younger than me.

Googled his name to get an e-mail address and found he's now Sir Vernon. And here I am just living out my days.

I am directly related to Alfred the Great and Malcolm Canmore, through the Tower family tree. Not sure that matters, even a little, since I don't have enough blood cells to have retained any of theirs, but it does make me read that history and, while some of it is speculative, we know surprisingly a lot about them both.

Also, St. Margaret of Scotland, Malcolm's wife. Apparently sainthood is not hereditary. Oh well.

The remarkable thing about "English" history before 1066 is the various players, and where they were from, and how influential they may have been. It really was a tiny world at the time. It took Alfred's grandson to actually unite most of England, and even he had issues with that. There were surprisingly few people involved. Being "king" only held so much sway, and could be lost in a heartbeat.

So much of that history is pure chance.

I was in 9th grade when they fired up "New Math." I told the teacher, I've got a good grounding in Olde Math, so I get what they're trying to do here, but I don't think it's good, nor will it be good for young'n's without Olde Math training. The educational establishment went with it anyway.

Henry VIII was a randy pig, and not very attractive. He cut a fine figure when he was young, but by the time he was messing with Ann, he was already beginning to rot from the inside. It is likely that Ann slept with shim to produce both Elizabeth but not the horribly misformed miscarriage she produced after, so she probably got that elsewhere. It is very likely that Henry was mostly impotent by then. He was certainly disillusioned by her act of purity before marriage.

He probably was the father of his only male heir. After that, he probably couldn't get it up to save his life, let alone his marriages.

Dude put himself above the Church, and nearly up to God. His legacy is the degeneration that is England today.

use a good skillet, lots butter, paula dean levels is good, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder and cook to crispy

Here's the disturbing part of all that. Most of the executions he "ordered" were not actually at his behest. When the "ruler" is completely crazy, sycophants will do anything to stay in his good graces, and murder is just one of the many evils committed in that ploy. All Henry had to do was complain about some inconvenience or another, and his minions would remove said inconvenience. If you read the sentence of Ann Boleyn, it is clear that it is a tautology, not a real sentence. They made it look like she had committed treason, but the argument is very thin and weak. But, it is what Henry wanted to hear, so it carried the day.

Historians have long maintained that Richard had unusual difficulty amassing an army at Bosworth-- in large part because of disgust with the disappearance of the Little Princes.

None of that was Tudor propaganda. Richard had 100% control of the Tower. The Princes had a FAR better claim to the throne than Richard. Otoh, EVERYBODY had a better claim to the throne than Henry Tudor.

Peel back but don't remove the leaves. Remove silk while rinsing under running water. (Butter, s & p if desired but not necessary before cooking.) Replace the leaves, trim stalk and maybe the tip if it's sparse, roll up in foil. Place on top rack for about 1/2 hour, more or less, while grilling other delicious foods.

I think the leaves add flavor.

It's ironic that More is treated as an avatar of freedom of conscience today. Sure, he stood firm for his own convictions against the onslaught of Henry's lust-driven theology. But as Chancellor, he watched innocent Protestants get burned at the stake at Smithfield for their heretical beliefs and did nothing to intervene.

It's too bad. More was a tremendously talented lawyer and therefore is someone I would like to admire.

Well, that was his job. Protestants may be perfectly acceptable now, but at the time, they were heretics (actually, they still are...), so burning them made perfect sense.

You can judge people by today's standards, but it makes no sense in time.

By those standards, George Washington was horridly evil man because he had slaves. But at the time, it was perfectly normal. We don't like it, but that hardly matters, historically.

Update on my mother. They did the procedure around noon to put in the vein filter to keep any more clots from getting up to the heart and lungs. She did well.

This morning, due to all the blood thinners they had her on, another big hematoma popped up on her left leg. It was incredibly painful -- she said "Gollie bum!". That's about the strongest cussin' she ever does.

It burst in post-op after the procedure, freaking everybody out, but no big deal. And that relieved the pressure.

She was sleeping when we left her this evening.

If interested, read some of the eyewitness accounts there. They're quite fascinating. Heat pulse followed by shock wave, just like a big nuke.

Had that thing come in a few minutes to and hour earlier, it would've hit Canada/Alaska and perhaps the northern US. Hour later and it would've hit Moscow and maybe Europe.

That thing would've flattened a city. NYC would be toast, for instance. Millions killed instantly.

That thing came in at 20 km/s or better. From some of those eyewitness accounts who say the "streak" it was blue, showing just hot hot it was. Peak temperature, well, we're talking 30,000F.

Surface temp right at the epicenter likely hit 3000F.

Another interesting thing I didn't know. For several nights after the impact, there was a very bright night sky glow over Europe and Asia. Icy material, as from a comet fragment sort of suspended high above would do this.

The pressure wave from that blast went around the globe at least twice, famously detected by sensitive barographs in Washington, DC.
