It's probably apocryphal that Betsy Ross designed the flag. Suggestions were that this legend came about because suffragettes in the 20th century needed a female heroine for the cause. "Francis Hopkinson, a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress was credited , with designing the first official flag, as he submitted a design and requested compensation for it in 1780."
Betsy Ross did design pennants for the Navy, however. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 03, 2026 09:42 AM (Bw1/o) Posted by: polynikes at July 03, 2026 09:43 AM (/WQyy) 28

Not sure what could have been done differently, but Iran's regime staying in place and defiant will make it that much harder to force Castro's leftovers to leave, or Venezuela's regime to soften. I get it that Trump didn't want it to look like US was mired in Iran over the 250yr anniversary, and wanted gas prices to come down. Maybe he's planning on going back.

The Declaration of Independence contended that King George was abusing his God-given power as leader of England and the American colonies. It was their responsibility as decent men, they stated in their document, to challenge him on this for the sake of his subjects. Benjamin Franklin himself recommended a national motto in defense of their actions.
“Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.” They listed King George’s offenses against the people and against his office—27 of them. The signers of the Declaration maintained that their continued efforts to bring their grievances before the king and his appointed leaders had been met with indifference, if not oppression. They had no other recourse, they stated in the document, but to declare their independence from the tyrant who represented neither them nor the God who entrusted him with his position of leadership. They rejected his authority because King George had rejected His authority. https://tinyurl.com/5n8v7nch - familylife.com 1/2 Posted by: Cro-Magnon Flounder, Disinformation Demon at July 03, 2026 09:47 AM (dK+Kv) 43
Their courage and sacrifice
Strong convictions often bring about strong consequences, especially when they oppose someone addicted to power. The British military had already been acting as though it was above the law; now it would be all-out war. Citizens who didn’t support the king would see suffering. They could expect to be imprisoned and have their property confiscated. And those who led the effort to step up and break away from King George would face serious consequences: not just the vengeance of the British throne, but their unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom would come at high personal price as well. Consider the fate of a number of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. . . . 2/2 Posted by: Cro-Magnon Flounder, Disinformation Demon at July 03, 2026 09:47 AM (dK+Kv) 44

Perfect, CBD. 💖👏🏻🎆🙏
Wikipedia, July 4 is the officially celebrated Independence Day, while July 2 is historically when the Continental Congress actually voted to declare independence. John Adams famously believed July 2 would be the date celebrated forever, as it was the day the colonies voted for freedom. July 3, 1776, was the pivotal day the delegates spent actively debating, revising, and editing Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence. The final wording was officially adopted on July 4, which is the date Americans celebrate today. --- The Thursday Overnight Open Thread (Doof) did an excellent job covering the history of July 2, too. --- I'd also like to report historical Philadelphia isn't done for yet! History came to life as 250 people formed the shape of the Liberty Bell on Independence Mall in Philadelphia on Thursday. This morning, hundreds & hundreds of people are lined up outside in the intense heat (95 degrees now) waiting to see the Liberty Bell. In my humble opinion, the reactions of visitors from around the world to this country for the World Cup is the story of what makes this 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence special. Yes, things are different than they were fifty years ago. But it took our visitors to open many of this country's folks' eyes about what is unique and special about our Union. The 49-star flag officially debuted on July 4, 1959, following Alaska's admission into the Union earlier that year. It was used for exactly one year.
The 50-star flag, representing the addition of Hawaii, was ordered on August 21, 1959, and officially raised for the first time on July 4, 1960. The specific dates of adoption and entry correspond to the federal law requiring a new star to be added on the Fourth of July following a new state's admission.
