Tech News

I bought 96GB of RAM six months ago for $300. Yes, it was older, slower DDR4, but that was already months into the Rampocalypse and Apple now charges that much for 12GB.

Meanwhile we're still waiting for the M5 Ultra - there was no M4 Ultra - but not making any plans to buy it given the pricing of the M3 Ultra models I just mentioned.
The Chuwi UniBook, featuring Intel's low-end Wildcat Lake processor, is now available in the US for $449. (Liliputing)

It has a lower resolution screen than the MacBook Neo, but has ten I/O ports including wired Ethernet compared with just three on the Neo. Weight is almost identical as well.

And it's now significantly cheaper rather than just barely.
Re-reviewing AMD's Ryzen 5800X3D. (Tom's Hardware)

It's back and it's exactly the same as it was before but $100 cheaper.

If you mostly want to play games and you have a good graphics card and already have a bunch of DDR4 memory, it might make sense. But at $350 the eight core 5800X3D costs more than the sixteen core 5900XT, and unless you only play games it might not be the best choice.

I think I might go for the 5900XT. I checked the Passmark subscores and it actually performs well except on a couple of specific tests where it is limited by the DDR4 bandwidth. For the stuff I tend to do it will be twice as fast as the 5800X3D.
If you're looking for a cheap DDR5 CPU, AMD's 9600X and 7600X are discounted right now. (WCCFTech)

The Dragonfly C1000 will feature 256 cores running at 5GHz and will support PCIe 7.0.

It's a compact 8"x8"x6" box with a sixteen core Intel CPU, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD, and an Nvidia graphics card, and starts at just $239.

There's a catch or two: The CPU is an Intel Xeon E5-2698v3 from 2014, the memory is DDR4 (which might be good or bad depending), and the Nvidia GPU starts with the GTS 450 from 2010. For $369 you get upgraded to the much more capable GTX 1650.

24 I bought a Samsung S10 Lite with the pogo keyboard. With the Amazon Prime Day Discounts the tablet $237.00 and the keyboard was $88.00. Now that I have it set up , it's going to work just fine for doing basic office tasks, surfing the web, watching media. An interesting feature of Samsung tablets is the DEX functionality has it allows for multiple resizable windows on the desktop. Essentially turning a tablet into a rudimentary PC. A less interesting feature of Samsung tablets is all there baked in software that you can't delete. At least you can hide them. The last move was to use Microsoft's Launcher to get the desktop set up exactly the way I want. I may have got lucky and found something that can replace my aging Surface Go 2 which has become basically useless because the battery lass about one hour.

We have a guy here in Sussex who drives around in a beater truck towing a trailer who collects metal for recycling. Washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and almost anything smaller composed of metal.

He makes money performing that service. No fee, just pile your offerings at the end of your driveway.

29 Accomack county provides a transfer station for those residents without private trash pickup. There is a trash compactor that accepts anything you can toss in. Only caveat is that it must be under 4’ long. There are recycling dumpsters if you want to bother yourself. I generally don’t except for glass. Virginia doesn’t do bottle/can returns.

39 Out here, you can put lawn and brush trimmings in the cart or bag them. There's no limit on the number of lawn/leaf bags you can put out either. One fall, I had at least 20 bags filled after the leaves came off the oak trees.

I do miss the days when we could put them in barrels and burn them, though. On a cool, crisp fall day the smoke from the oak and pecan leaves and limbs was something to enjoy.

Tomorrow I am attending the memorial service for my DIL's paternal grandfather. Mrs. KvC will remain here is Sussex, so I will be there on my own. The goings on for this event have taken my son and two gKids out of the Cub Pack fishing afternoon the next day, which saddens me because the gKids do enjoy catch and release fishing. 45 Last night Linda wanted to give little Dagny a treat to see if she liked it. So we locked Stirling up in a carrier to give her a chance; he'd have stolen the treat if he were free. Remarkably, he went right into his carrier, which he hadn't seen in a while, without any trouble.

Dagny didn't like the treat. We let him out, and darned if she didn't trot over and go into the carrier herself.

He gobbled the new treat, and Dagny got some of the crunchy ones she loves. Everybody was happy.

49 My former employer had at least two of those blue recycling bins in our building. Part of my job was to ring up or post a message to the Facilities people to come get it when the bin was full.

They stopped worrying about it soon after the Sniffle Scare. There were two big bins in the foyer. I would put our paper trash in there, and it would get collected every now and then.

We are nearing the end of the Krebs' Mazda 3 having expired saga. We will donate it over to a veterans' charity on Tuesday and it will be towed away. Its demise came about because a front engine mount broke and said engine took a nosedive toward the radiator. I suspect that failure was a delayed outcome from a T-bone collision with another vehicle just over 39 months ago.

It was a painful end to the car for which a goodly number of its 169,000 miles and seventeen years had been spent in service of my scout troop. It was the "Wawa car", as I usually would stop at that convenience store on one leg or the other of our weekend camping trips over the course of my seven years as Scoutmaster (and during all the five years before I took on that responsibility).

54 Up in the country, at the county, one could dump only wood at a specified place(free). But they had two chippers; fine and course. You could buy the chipped wood by the lb. I had a 600ft drive that cost about $10 to line every 3 years. It looked good too.

56 I'm not very good at recycling, A lot of plastic goes in the regular trash. Metal and boxes are about all that is in the yellow bin we get. (you can get a tote) In Florida, Pinellas county they took away the bins for recycling. But they do have a great recycling for electronics, etc. They bring out a cart at their center and you just load it up and its gone.

Thanks for the important ways you serve the scouting community in that way. I remember you telling us of some of the interesting activities you had done in the past with them.

Our church patriarch who had no boys but wonderful daughters did scouting for years. He told me they referred
to him as Mr. ____ ( instead of by his first name) _ for decades afterwards, and when we had his memorial service some wonderful men travelled from states at quite a distance because they had so appreciated his leadership.

A neighbor bought an entire truck load (approx 3 cubic yards) of the stuff and it seemed to be a pretty good deal. Not a lot of unusable detritus and they were willing to dump portions in a couple of locations. I think it was <$100.

Morning was good, got some gift cards from kids/parents and the kids were happy it was the last day.

Afternoon: Kids arrive at the buses bouncing off the walls because the teachers all had last-school-day parties with cake and other sugary treats, so when they hit the buses, they were practically vibrating.

And of course this was the day that traffic decided to crank the stupid dial all the way to 10 out of 10. It was kinda nuts, but I got 'em all home safe, and managed to avoid collisions. The car drivers were all squirrel-brained, I swear. (You know how squirrels dart out in front of your vehicle at the last second even though they can see you coming for hundreds of yards? That, with cars.)

Then I got back to the bus yard and they had staff out directing drivers to park in specific places as tightly as they could next to each other so we could fit them all (all the buses come back from drivers that normally keep them at home, and we have a pretty full yard in THAT scenario.) I went back around 9 PM to take a peek and wow they're in there like sardines!

Anyway, I am glad I have a day off after that three-ring circus!

My thoughts are, taste often. Crumb toppings taste great as you’re mixing them. If it turns out that nutmeg is too sharp on its own for your purposes, add just enough cinnamon to soften it. If you’re specifically trying to avoid cinnamon, ginger might work; but a touch of salt can also soften sharp spices. And so can an undetectable amount of cayenne (older recipes often call for powdered hot pepper in amounts that do not add any hot pepper flavor, but do cause the other flavors to mix better).
