I don't understand this pessimism. Almost no states even allowed concealed carry in the 1980s. Now more than half the states allow it without a permit. How is this right being gradually lost? I'm all for vigilant defense of liberties, but doomerism seems like the opposite of that, since it demoralizes people.

I could never figure out, when I was active duty, why the Federal government put my pay check into one pocket, then took a bunch of it out of the other pocket.

We do...when deployed to a combat zone. As much as I love all the perks of military service (as I fly with free luggage for showing my ID), at some point, it is just a job/career, and already pays pretty well, with full retirement at 20 years of service. At some point...it's enough.

Although, the Left never says that for teachers, so...dump more largesse on me (and police)!!!

Years ago I was in Kauai and one day I took a tour of the Na Pali coast with a guy who called himself Captain Zodiac. Rubber Zodiac boat.

He was a surfer from California who moved to Hawaii to surf and did the boat thing as a second job for beer money. His real job was being paid by the state as a poi farmer which grew naturally on his property. He literally did nothing other than let the state send people in to harvest it and cash checks.

Hawaiians love their poi.

Also getting for a week in Yosemite in July with about 20 in-laws, out-laws and conmon-laws, sons and daughters and associated hangers-on.

195 I liked new Dr Who until the "Midnight" episode (David Tennant). The episode itself is brilliant, one of the best Dr Who shows ever, and (tellingly) one that Russell Davies didn't want to air (despite the fact that he wrote it).

There's a line where one of the passengers asks the Dr why they should trust him, and he says "Because I'm clever." The other passengers object that they're not dullards, but the point was made...the New Who writers weren't interested in telling interesting stories, they wanted to show how clever they were in comparison to us idiotic viewers.

And that's where my interest died. Tried a few episodes after, but all I could see was the smugness. "Look how clever I am. Look how creative I am. Enjoy my genius, proles."

One of my most memorable vacation trips ever, when I was a teen, was when my father hired an Indian guide with some Navajo ponies back into the Canyon. There’s a whole network of dwellings back there that you can’t to except on horseback, and you have to hire a Navajo guide because parts of it are outside the Nat park and on their land.

Some of the dwellings are in surprisingly good states of preservation, because they’re so far back no one gets to them. The attitude of the Navajo guide at the ruins was interesting, and he obviously thought we were kind of nuts for wanting to go in. “Not our houses, not our people. Places of the dead.” was all he would say, and he was clearly uncomfortable with the idea of getting too close to them.

My approach is that you have to pay federal income tax to vote in federal elections, and state income or property taxes (if they exist) to vote in state and local elections. If you don't have enough reportable income, or your accountants bring your tax to 0, no vote.

I looked it up, and Micah Lasher was declared the winner with 35.2% of >95% reporting; apparently, NY doesn't do runoffs for primaries. He's a former child magician -- very on point for a Dem politician, still professionally fooling people -- and insider wonk. That's an understatement. He's been an aide of various types -- chief of staff, director of policy, etc. -- to Michael Bloomberg, Jerry Nadler, Letitia James, and Kathy Hochul.

What won it for him (aside from Bloomberg's almost $10M) is that his main opponent, Alex Bores, is a former data scientist whose big achievement was sponsoring NY state's AI regulation, to take effect on Jan. 1. So, Bores's main selling point also drew organized opposition.

242 I saw the most amazing piece of horsemanship I’ll ever see on that trip, right in front of me. One of the riders with us was a girl of about 20 or 21, who was clearly experienced with horses, and was also very cute, in an athletic way. I was about 14 and was completely enamored with her, of course. I was following her, and her pony was skittish that day (for no good reason) as we came back down into a dry river bed, that pony decided his saddle bothered him so with no warning he threw himself on his back, to try and get the saddle off or something.

Obviously she could have been badly hurt or even killed by this, and probably should have been. But I remember like it was yesterday, (and I had the best view of anyone) that as that horse went down she smoothly and instantly brought her right foot up to the saddle and launched herself off his back, going into a sweet tuck and roll and landing unscathed a few feet away. Sandy river bottom, so no harm done.
We were pissed at the horse (I think he was moved to pack duty) but mostly we just stood with our mouths open at how effortless she made saving her life look.

Since the 1930s, Democrats have consistently had a voter registration advantage over Republicans. Even when Nixon and Reagan were winning 49 state victories, there were way more Democrats than Republicans. One of the reasons why Democrats had a structural advantage for so long was that their party was a hodgepodge. You could have George McGovern and George Wallace in the same primary in the same year (1972). Even "moderate" Joe Biden got by playing this game of being something to everyone (especially low info types). Crazy people who wear their policy proposals on their sleeve (and invariable excuse street violence) end the game of pretending to be moderate and then acting radical. Okay, looked that one up too. Former City Comptroller Brad Lander had Zohran Mamdani's endorsement, and his big campaign issue was supporting Hamas over Israel, using the fallacious "Gaza genocide" rhetoric that is so effective with brain-rotted Democrat primary voters.

They literally primaried out a sitting Congressman for daring to be a non-anti-Israel Jew. That's where that party is now. Unfortunately, I expect most American Jews to remain asleep to what time it is.

As someone who has been in the education system for over 20 years now (un-unionized, proudly), the idea that these guys are great at brain-washing people is bizarre to me. The biggest union shills are exceptionally lazy and entitled. They can and sometimes do get their students to parrot back their views, but it's about as impactful as that British teacher in Pink Floyd's "The Wall" having his students repeat the definition of an acre back to him.

Not that the education system shouldn't be revamped. It should. End the credentialism based on degrees and make teacher training entirely about managing a classroom. Then encourage burned out middle-aged professionals to transition to teaching once they've learned some methods. Teacher "training" now is all crap theory taught by people with less than five years in the classroom. The TikToks showing HS grads who can't read a sentence are the result. Such people don't even vote, unless they think they are personally getting what whig called their "cheese".

303 As someone who has been in the education system for over 20 years now (un-unionized, proudly), the idea that these guys are great at brain-washing people is bizarre to me. The biggest union shills are exceptionally lazy and entitled. They can and sometimes do get their students to parrot back their views, but it's about as impactful as that British teacher in Pink Floyd's "The Wall" having his students repeat the definition of an acre back to him.

Not that the education system shouldn't be revamped. It should. End the credentialism based on degrees and make teacher training entirely about managing a classroom. Then encourage burned out middle-aged professionals to transition to teaching once they've learned some methods. Teacher "training" now is all crap theory taught by people with less than five years in the classroom. The TikToks showing HS grads who can't read a sentence are the result. Such people don't even vote, unless they think they are personally getting what whig called their "cheese".

I don’t touch the students. At all. For any reason. Problem solved.

But I do see your point. I knew teachers who joined unions for that reason. (I’d replace unions with legal insurance for that reason alone.). It didn’t help that in my one year (so far) we had an administrator who gave no fucks about discipline, though he’d happily bitch out the teachers. See, disciplining students is HARD and he wanted to maximize his state retirement - his real reason for being there.

i was informed that myocarditis was a normal childhood problem, nothing novel or exciting in general terms, and the life-long heart injury from it was perfectly normal and nothing to be worried about. It probably was a good thing that children had to be monitored more closely doing team sports.

I was witness, this is how unions got a toe/tow hold.
Early seventies frivolus lawsuits were being brought against teachers (this was planned) and liberal judges, instead of admonishing lawyers for insulting the court, were allowing them to come forward. - Here's the kicker.- When the teachers asked the administration to support them, Administration said, No, you are independent professionals you are on your own.

Then the union walked in and said, join me, I will support you. I will provide you with good lawyers. And they did.
