I liked new Dr Who until the "Midnight" episode (David Tennant). The episode itself is brilliant, one of the best Dr Who shows ever, and (tellingly) one that Russell Davies didn't want to air (despite the fact that he wrote it).
There's a line where one of the passengers asks the Dr why they should trust him, and he says "Because I'm clever." The other passengers object that they're not dullards, but the point was made...the New Who writers weren't interested in telling interesting stories, they wanted to show how clever they were in comparison to us idiotic viewers. And that's where my interest died. Tried a few episodes after, but all I could see was the smugness. "Look how clever I am. Look how creative I am. Enjoy my genius, proles." There’s a whole network of dwellings back there that you can’t to except on horseback, and you have to hire a Navajo guide because parts of it are outside the Nat park and on their land. Some of the dwellings are in surprisingly good states of preservation, because they’re so far back no one gets to them. The attitude of the Navajo guide at the ruins was interesting, and he obviously thought we were kind of nuts for wanting to go in. “Not our houses, not our people. He's been an aide of various types -- chief of staff, director of policy, etc. -- to Michael Bloomberg, Jerry Nadler, Letitia James, and Kathy Hochul. What won it for him (aside from Bloomberg's almost $10M) is that his main opponent, Alex Bores, is a former data scientist whose big achievement was sponsoring NY state's AI regulation, to take effect on Jan. 1. The problem modern leftists have is that they are an entirely urban phenomenon. All successful revolutionaries had the support or at least the acquiescence of the countryside. Mao and the Khmer Rouge at least in theory venerated the peasants (though in practice they starved like everyone else). People don't seem to understand this because they think about Paris in 1789 or Petrograd in 1917 when they think of revolution. But those revolutions didn't just benefit from two of the most inept governments before Keir Starmer's premiership, they had peasant support for a while (think 'the Great Terror in France and "Land, Peace and Bread" with the Bolsheviks). Even the Nazis started off with rural East Prussia as their electoral stronghold. Wholly urban revolutions don't work and invariable get crushed. If support for the Spanish Republic had been confined to Madrid and Barcelona as popular memory would have people believe, the Nationalists wouldn't even have had to appoint Franco as their leader. I saw the most amazing piece of horsemanship I’ll ever see on that trip, right in front of me. One of the riders with us was a girl of about 20 or 21, who was clearly experienced with horses, and was also very cute, in an athletic way. I was about 14 and was completely enamored with her, of course. I was following her, and her pony was skittish that day (for no good reason) as we came back down into a dry river bed, that pony decided his saddle bothered him so with no warning he threw himself on his back, to try and get the saddle off or something.
Obviously she could have been badly hurt or even killed by this, and probably should have been. But I remember like it was yesterday, (and I had the best view of anyone) that as that horse went down she smoothly and instantly brought her right foot up to the saddle and launched herself off his back, going into a sweet tuck and roll and landing unscathed a few feet away. Sandy river bottom, so no harm done. We were pissed at the horse (I think he was moved to pack duty) but mostly we just stood with our mouths open at how effortless she made saving her life look. I actually prefer that Democrats start nominating actual loony commies, especially in blue areas where they will win anyway.
Since the 1930s, Democrats have consistently had a voter registration advantage over Republicans. Even when Nixon and Reagan were winning 49 state victories, there were way more Democrats than Republicans. That advantage has shrunk considerably in the age of Trump, and given how many red states don't have party registration, it might no longer exist. One of the reasons why Democrats had a structural advantage for so long was that their party was a hodgepodge. You could have George McGovern and George Wallace in the same primary in the same year (1972). Even "moderate" Joe Biden got by playing this game of being something to everyone (especially low info types). Crazy people who wear their policy proposals on their sleeve (and invariable excuse street violence) end the game of pretending to be moderate and then acting radical. You don't get Spanburgers if DSA types win all the primaries. Posted by: the lower depths at June 23, 2026 11:27 PM (yZOfl) 255

I work as a sales consultant in the children's wooden toys and construction sets department. A dad with a baby in a stroller comes over, taking a long time to choose what he wants while I comment on the products. No matter what the father shows, the baby looks at me attentively, without blinking. After a long explanation and presentation of the toys to the boy, the dad sighs and says, "Sorry, Max, but I can't buy you the lady." He sighs sadly and leaves. Posted by: the lower depths at June 23, 2026 10:09 PM (yZOfl) Okay, looked that one up too. Former City Comptroller Brad Lander had Zohran Mamdani's endorsement, and his big campaign issue was supporting Hamas over Israel, using the fallacious "Gaza genocide" rhetoric that is so effective with brain-rotted Democrat primary voters. They literally primaried out a sitting Congressman for daring to be a non-anti-Israel Jew. That's where that party is now. Unfortunately, I expect most American Jews to remain asleep to what time it is. For now, the socialists are chanting the code phrase, "Globalize the Intifada". However, it's only a matter of time until they turn subtext into text, and start chanting something like, "From Maine to Hawai'i, America will be Judenfrei." That's what they mean. 257 Try looking closely at precinct results for elections. Or look at the more detailed crosstabs of exit poll.
First, white women are Republicans and have been so since at least 2012. The wine aunt karen is a thing, but she seems much more notable than she really is because she is so darn loud. Second, old suburbs around cities have become more leftist, but if you get a few miles further out you get ruby red territory. In my state "old growth" suburbs from the 1950s went Democratic even as minority turnout and voting favored Democrats less (and newer suburbs and exurbs became ever more Republican under Trump). Third, when you take away the college educated (who are not and are not likely to ever be an absolute majority of voters), all sub-groups other than black women are getting more rather than less Republican. Four, people don't understand policy. They'll claim to support things they end up voting against. A recent YouGov survey was absurdly lopsided towards Democrats, and all the cross-tabs claimed that nobody supported Trump's policies. Yet even in this crap survey, the midterm result was D+3, which might keep the House red. Posted by: the lower depths at June 23, 2026 11:38 PM (yZOfl) 267

Who are the living positive (seeming) black icons and role models originating in the 2000's that aren't specifically known for being leftist idiots...? Shall I play the Jeopardy theme song or go straight to the crickets? We spend so long in the Left's sea of deception we miss the obvious. I got a ticket from a camera in TX two years ago, and when they mailed me the citation, I mailed back a copy of the TX Transportation Code that explicitly forbids the practice. Haven’t heard back from them since.
If they want their money, they can come get me, at which time I will ask that they explain to the TX AG why TX law does not apply to them. Posted by: Cow Demon at June 24, 2026 12:10 AM (T6aVk) 311

She has called the U.S. an “effing disgrace”, and said in a prior social media post “I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me.”

Oh, hay. Remember when everyone said that price controls only distort the markets and cause the very problems they are supposed to fix? And everyone said that was only because it was not done well, a good communist state like Cuba had the knack and were doing just fine?
Miguel Diaz-Canel has just come out and admitted that Cuba’s generalized price caps failed to contain inflation, generated shortages, encouraged illegal markets, and reduced tax revenues. Cuba has has decided to eliminate price controls Posted by: Kindltot at June 24, 2026 12:17 AM (rbvCR) 323

Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at June 24, 2026 12:11 AM (vOxCS) I don’t touch the students. At all. For any reason. Problem solved. But I do see your point. I knew teachers who joined unions for that reason. (I’d replace unions with legal insurance for that reason alone.). It didn’t help that in my one year (so far) we had an administrator who gave no fucks about discipline, though he’d happily bitch out the teachers. See, disciplining students is HARD and he wanted to maximize his state retirement - his real reason for being there. Posted by: Cow Demon at June 24, 2026 12:17 AM (T6aVk) 324

The leftists in my town were excited to get flock cameras. If you've done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear.
Then a rumor went around claiming ICE was using them to track illegals and anti-ICE protestors. Now the leftist in my town are that obviously these cameras are a violation of your privacy and rights. In fairness they've gone with the same tack on clot shots, for a long time they argued there was nothing wrong with the government sharing your healthcare records with anyone and everyone...that seems to have evaporated about the same time they couldn't get you kicked out of an event for not being clot shotted... Posted by: Blonde Morticia at June 23, 2026 11:48 PM (XJ22o) I think we’re seeing the set up for the real race in ‘28. What you see is all you are going to get.” Then the tears will start. >>>I knew teachers who joined unions for that reason. (I’d replace unions with legal insurance for that reason alone.).
-- I was witness, this is how unions got a toe/tow hold. Early seventies frivolus lawsuits were being brought against teachers (this was planned) and liberal judges, instead of admonishing lawyers for insulting the court, were allowing them to come forward. - Here's the kicker.- When the teachers asked the administration to support them, Administration said, No, you are independent professionals you are on your own. Then the union walked in and said, join me, I will support you. I will provide you with good lawyers. And they did. It was a set up.
