Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Post NoVAMoMe Discussion and Analysis Edition!![]() FUNdamentals FUNdamentals of MoMe'n that is, with the operative word being FUN! The social event of the season kicked off Friday afternoon with a small group and perfect weather, and by perfect I mean really actually perfect. The Pre-MoMe is a low key affair and among other things we mostly discussed the perfect weather, and enjoyed each other's company without being in full NoVAMoMe mode. The following day was the main event, and to make up for the perfect weather the day before we had, you guessed it, more perfect weather. People arrived at the appointed time, and did the normal MoMe things, which is to say, enjoyed each other's company. We were fortunate to have attracted some new mostly-lurker types who, judging by the smiles, enjoyed themselves thoroughly. It's so nice to watch people meeting and re-acquainting with their online pals. I say this a lot as you all know, but these get-togethers are pretty special, and you are only cheating yourself if you don't make the effort to get to one. I am aware that we have a fair amount of introverts among us, and imagine that's fairly common among online communities, but I cannot overemphasize the low-key nature of these gatherings. You owe it to yourself to give it a try at least once. You can absolutely be a total wallflower and hide and not talk to anyone, or be the life of the party, the choice is yours. There is absolutely zero pressure from anyone, and believe me when I say you will not be the biggest weirdo present. If you missed the NoVAMoMe, fear not. The TXMoMe is right around the corner, October 16-17, in Corsicana, TX. Contact Ben Had for details. A link is always on the main page, left sidebar. Finally, I want to thank my bestest blog buddy bluebell for her continued friendship over all these years. She makes being the nicest person in the world look easy. Model of 1917 Grains? As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Did some shootin' in the last couple of weeks. Went with a friend to his gun club in rural Western PA. It's right behind the middle of nowhere. Didn't get a chance to shoot my S&W FPC (.9mm) but did get extensive work with my .357 revolver. I did ok. Posted by: Puddleglum, drive by pew pew at June 21, 2026 07:07 PM (sAmhv) 9

You can absolutely be a total wallflower and hide and not talk to anyone
Though, you probably won't succeed at the 'not talking to anyone'. Other wallflowers will notice and you will soon be surrounded by them and having an absolute blast. I'm sorry I had to miss it again this year. I will probably miss Texas, too. It's turning into a very rough year for me. But I can smile, sitting here, remembering all the other times and all the people I've met. Posted by: GWB at June 21, 2026 07:08 PM (kU0PQ) 11
This was my first MoMe. It was truly a thrill getting to meet my imaginary friends, put faces to names, and share stories. Bluebell and Weasel are gracious hosts, and made me feel welcome and that they were really glad I came. I regret only that I have missed so many meetups in the past. I hope not to miss any going forward. This is the best group I have been associated with.

And for those interested, today we gathered at the range to practice, and also try new things. My goal was to practice trigger pull as taught in NH, and it was successful - but of course requires more work. I was generally grouping shots, perhaps not where I wanted to, but I was grouping them. I also shot my first .45 (thank you Scoob) and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. I imagined the gub to be heavy and recoil significant. I was wrong on both counts.
But today reminded me that I need to get back into the twice a week practice schedule. Posted by: The Grateful - Acta Non Verba at June 21, 2026 07:20 PM (IQ6Gq) 26

It's been a while since I attended a NoVaMoMee, although I was at the first 3 (or 4?). If you're lurking and you're concerned you're going to have to put your real name on a name tag, nope. There are a bunch of morons and 'ettes whose real names I still don't know, even though I've met them in person.
As for the meeting in person part, it's fun to put nics to faces, and if you're a regular reader you already have a bit of familiarity with a bunch of them. For some of them, you're like, yup, the persona online is exactly who they are in real life. For me, Berserker was like that (Mrs. Berserker is a great gal too). Hrothgar as well. And seeing AlextheChick get riled up was always fun. Posted by: Vendette at June 21, 2026 07:22 PM (1ieqq) 32
Of note to those of you in Virginia: with 9 days to go until the evil new laws take effect, I was curious how it would be at the range. It was empty. Have no idea if that's because it was beautiful weather and Father's Day, but I'll have a better idea on Friday. On the wall of long guns, more than half had been removed. Same for the general supply walls. And it seemed to me that RSOs were far more on alert on the range than previous.

Posted by: TRex --- I'm happy to report that as of Thursday I'm now the proud owner of shiny new snake-free ductwork. The crew accidentally disconnected the dehumidifier pump drain line on their way out, though. I discovered it shortly after they left and notified them. But I had to get under there and reconnect it myself because they weren't able to get back the same day and meanwhile, the pump was spraying water all over the crawl space. By some miracle, I did it right! Not sure if the flooding problem is resolved. Next heavy or prolonged rain will be the test. New DeLisle Carbines Coming From US Armament Manufacturing
https://tinyurl.com/4nphwen5 Posted by: Kindltot at June 21, 2026 08:03 PM (rbvCR) I have one of the US Armament Manufacturing examples. The workmanship on the rifle is quite good. The wood is finished well (relative to WWII standards) and the butt plate is brass. The sights are adjustable out to 200 yards. The suppressor is quite effective. It really cuts down the noise, even in an indoor setting. After about 75 rounds, the sights look like they're dead on at about 25 yards. My one complaint (beyond the price) is that 1911 magazines modified to accommodate the De Lisle's unique magazine catch are cheap generic 1911 magazines. the butt plate is brass. I would have preferred to start with a higher end magazine manufacturer like Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick.
Posted by: Ed L a ======= By WWII, brass was in scarce supply so buttplates on Lee Enfield WWII types were zamac or blackened steel. You won't see either of those on pre WWII rifles unless retrofitted. Like the 1903a3, a lot of shortcuts were made during WWII for the sole remaining English firm BSA Shirley made No. 1, Mk 3's and later transitioned to No. 4 rifles. They used the dispersal scheme so a number of different subcontractors made the parts. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 08:35 PM (E4rtv) 107

Thanks for including the videos on the model 1917. Those old bolt action 30-06 battle rifles are wonderfully versatile. Unless the barrel is shot out they are good enough for casual target shooting and most hunting. With cast bullet hand loads they can serve as a squirrel rifle or a gallery gun. And those rear sights are plenty accurate once dialed in for the specific load.

Posted by: screaming in digital ==== Some of those old WWI chambers can be generous and the US Army did not store 1917 rifles in the best of ways so they had some issues reissuing them in WWII to the extent that they put in a order for new barrels as barrels and chambers on some rifles corroded in storage between the wars. WWII barrels were made by Johnson Automatics and by High Standard--the greenish gray parkerizing is also in use. The original parkerizing in WWI used a bit different ingredients so you got a blackish parkerizing. IRRC, manganese (dark gray to blackish) in WWI, and zinc (light gray to grayish green) in WWII, probably because manganese was better employed in alloy steels rather than outsides of rifles. And some are just dirty. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 08:49 PM (E4rtv) 129

Posted by: JTB ======= The heaviness of the rifle offsets the recoil--in full battle rattle, they weigh heavier than springfield 1903s. The 1917 action and their P14 predecessors were altered post war into magnums by several custom gunshops because of strength. Not really true for the WWI era 1903's. The 1903a3s were built of modern steel but conversions were relatively scarce for those. The P14 better fits the 300 Win Mag due to the differences in magazine length (shorter for the P14). The 1917 often was converted into a 300 Norma Magnum. Good round that never really caught on. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 08:54 PM (E4rtv) 136

IIRC, the 1917 "Enfield" introduced the rear peep sight and front post sight (with protective "barleycorn ear" protectors on each side. This type of sight would remain in use on successive US service rifles (M1, M1 Carbine, M14, M16, M4) well into the 21st century. Posted by: Ed L I'll bet they put a brass one on because it is prettier. The steel ones look pretty much WWII minimum specs of ugly but enough to get through the war quality. Post war, it simply was often whatever the armorer had in stock when one was refitted. FTR'ed in their lingo. Brits saved the quality for where it counted in rifles but not the finish on rifle furniture on WWII products or later WWI ones for that matter. The No. 1 Mk 3* came about in 1916 after the Battle of the Somme created an enormous demand for rifles. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 08:57 PM (E4rtv) 144

Posted by: Ed L Occasionally you will see a parts rifle with the proper sights switched as you can put a P14 sight and front sight blades on a 1917 but not vice versa because the P14 sight bed is not long enough as the receivers had to be lengthened for the 30-06 cartridge. Front sight blades, it doesn't matter much as the P14/1917 will even take some Lee Enfield front sight blades with some effort. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 09:00 PM (E4rtv) 148

Good evening. Range was visited, twice. Once to confirm ammunition batch and once to shoot a 1,000 yard match. The 135 grain A tip bullets proved to be loaded to acceptable standards the day before the match.
I'm pretty sure my fundamentals were good. So, my plan was, going into the match, take two rifles. One optimized for 6.5 mm 135 grain A tip bullets and the other optimized for 6.5 mm 153 grain A tips. My thinking was, due to the way the wind kicks up around here, I would move to the heavier bullets with the better bc if we saw significant wind. The fly in the ointment: The 153 grain loads might be a little sketchy from a consistency standpoint. Day of the match I got caught right in the middle: Breezy enough to question using the lighter bullet but not so breezy I wanted to risk using loads I wasn't all that confident in. In the end, I went with the lighter bullets traveling a little faster and decided to trust my wind reading skills. I ended up in a 3 way tie for second place with a 96 but ultimately 4th as I only had two in the X ring. But, I did catch the wind shift and increase and beat several of our more experienced shoots. Posted by: screaming in digital The value on those keeps escalating. They really are a magnificent rifle with one fault, the mag ejection spring is prone to breaking. And btw, when it does, the rifle's bolt will not extract brass from the chamber sometime or eject it depending on how broken it is. Which now that I think about it, you might want to check that spring. You don't have to take the rifle apart, just remove the bolt, look on the left side inside the back of the receiver for the rifle, and you should see the tip of the ejector spring. It is held in place by a small screw going from the top to the bottom and the spring pivots on that screw to eject spent shells. https://tinyurl.com/Blog-with-pictures-of-spring Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 09:07 PM (E4rtv) 159

I expect there is some notes somewhere that details whether or not the brass SMLE No.1 butt plates were to be removed or not. The buttstock was basically standard. Probably Forgotten Weapons. Stopping by the gun thread just to mention that - for the first time in about a year and a half, I got some trigger time at the club.
Put about 90 rounds through my P320C and only about 60 rounds through the MCX Rattler. Groupings were poor to start out with on the pistol but quickly improved as I reacquainted myself with my firearm that I hadn't shot in months. Started out low and to the left like all right handed shooters naturally do I think. Posted by: Defenestratus at June 21, 2026 09:10 PM (CNp5O) 166
I understand that bullet weight can make a difference but what settings do you optimize on a rifle for different bullet weights? Just MOA because of the difference in trajectory?
BTW, thanks Weasel for the video in the content on grains. Posted by: TRex Makes a difference in the arc of the bullet trajectory and sometimes wind can be a factor at longer range. So you zero your scope differently for each. If you have to use the same rifle for both, most people mark their scope rather than rezeroing each time. Fine enough for hunters but if you are in a shooting competition, zero the rifle each time you switch ammo in the location you are shooting--altitude, humidity, and a bunch of other factors come into play at long range shooting comps. Weasel is your guy for that. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 09:11 PM (E4rtv) 167

The barrel on one of my rifles is a 28" Heavy Palma contour. The distance to the lands is short so I use a smaller bullet, the 135 gain A tip. My other 6.5-06 has a 26" Heavy Varmint profile barrel on it, with more freebore, which allows me to seat the bullet further out without the bullet jamming into the rifling lands. The freebore difference between the two rifles dictates seating depth. Posted by: Blake - semi lurker in marginal standing at June 21, 2026 09:15 PM (UJMvS) 177

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Those are Swiss watch precision fitting on the A5. Check Numrich for a schematic but sometimes the problem is someone did not adjust the friction rings when shooting a different shotgun load and that affects the extraction. Most people casually shooting pop or grandpop's Auto 5 never read the manual and assume that it will handle all different shotgun loads without adjustment. It won't function sometimes if changing from light to heavy or heavy to light. Apart from oiling it, I will use a dummy round and check for firing and extraction. You might have two rifles and zero each one separately rather than taking one rifle and trying to make changes at the range?
Posted by: TRex ======= Easier if competing with it. Not really needed for minute of elk etc. The long range competition shooters are just getting warmed up by the time it is well past what most hunters would consider a humane kill range. I never shot much long range even when I did shoot back a ways. Most of my rifles are battered old shooter grade military bolt actions and you get minute of man accuracy unless you tune them specifically for competition (which in turn negatively affects their collector's value and some alterations like glass bedding, etc. are not allowed anyway). So 3-5 MOA is usual with open sights and range ammo fodder and a bit less with peep sights on a good day at 100-200 yards==maybe 2.5-4 on something like an Lee Enfield No. 4 with Singer peep iron sights. Watching the "old" movie, The Jackal, with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. He tests out his big weapon somewhere in Canada, far enough away from people that a full-auto cannon won't be heard, as well as the explosion of a car.
And he fires it off sitting not 5 feet away, without hearing protection. The only nod to "it should be really loud" is he squiggles his ear with a finger afterwards. And it's the ear furthest away from the weapon. Mhmmmmm.... Posted by: GWB at June 21, 2026 09:31 PM (kU0PQ) 207

Posted by: Blake Software beats hardware on the range, but as you said, money spent on hi end reloading gear, premium brass, etc. can go well beyond a rifle. Not for me, I'm afraid as I don't think I will probably ever be shooting hard recoiling rifles and shotguns again. We will see at the one year mark after my back surgery. Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47.
In January 2014, a letter that Kalashnikov wrote six months before his death to the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, was published by the Russian daily newspaper Izvestia. In the letter, he stated that he was suffering "spiritual pain" about whether he was responsible for the deaths caused by the weapons he created. Translated from the published letter he states, "I keep having the same unsolved question: if my rifle claimed people's lives, then can it be that I... a Christian and an Orthodox believer, was to blame for their deaths?" The patriarch wrote back, thanked Kalashnikov, and said that he "was an example of patriotism and a correct attitude toward the country". Kirill added about the design responsibility for the deaths by the rifle, "the church has a well-defined position when the weapon is defense of the Motherland, the Church supports its creators and the military, which use it." - I agree with the patriarch. A weapon is a tool. The designer isn't responsible for misuse. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks and His All White Jury! at June 21, 2026 09:40 PM (ndZc7) 218

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Start with the friction rings, you can find Auto 5 manuals online. My guess is the friction rings are buggered and perhaps congealed old grease. I would use sewing machine oil for lube or the old 3-1. The tolerances are fine on the parts of them in those shotguns and they used really light oils back in the day for lube as they lubed field guns and cleaned them each day they used them. And be careful with the brake cleaner, use the non chlorinated stuff as that can affect the rather thin bluing on those Auto 5s. Odorless mineral spirits would do as well (which is often what the non chlorinated stuff is anyway). And the rest you know, light grease on sliding surfaces, oil around pivot points. Good night all. As Hrothgar says, Corsicana in October.

The brake cleaner I have is the non-chlorinated kind. I'm sure I have some real light oil here, but maybe a spray can of some sort of light gun oil would be better?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ======== Rem oil is cheap and quite good. Sewing machine or clock oil is very good. I tend to use lubriplate for the grease on rifles as it is non toxic and I have a garand and m1 carbine. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 09:51 PM (E4rtv) 234

---- Sounds great! Thanks. To all of you who have sent me stuff, I swear I will get to it eventually. I'm a little bit of a lazy-bones lately and typically leave writing the thread until Sunday afternoon. I need to get better about that! Posted by: Weasel at June 21, 2026 09:51 PM (ei1sX) 235
I had to at least SEE "The Astounding She-Monster!", so I skipped around a bit. Looks like quite the film....sometimes she walks slowly away from people as dramatic music plays, and sometimes she walks slowly towards them. Certainly cute, and that outfit shows some curves, but the 50s "punch sbooting" style doesn't seem very effective...it didn't slow "The Astounding She-Monster!" down at all!!!

Excellent observation! The short answer is yes, I need the extra height due to my using a higher rear bag. I sort of just grabbed what I had available at the farm that day. That setup is much less than ideal, but worked out ok for video exhibition purposes.
Posted by: Weasel at June 21, 2026 09:48 PM (ei1sX) Thanks Weasel. I’d actually like a little higher rear bag as sometimes I have issues at my range getting the rear of the gun high enough to get on target. Was going to make a couple wood or cardboard shims to go under my current rear bag. Do you happen to remember the maker and model of rear bag you were using? Posted by: Weasel Uh oh, you will find it hard to live down now. You should have pulled the inscrutable Weasel Fu-- "Grasshopper, when you can catch a fly in the hand, then you can learn the secrets of my shooting bags" or some such. Posted by: whig at June 21, 2026 09:53 PM (E4rtv) 238

---- 100% I do. Protektor Shooting Bags in PA. Just search for Protektor and you'll find them. Very very very very highly recommended. Great people and products. If you don't see what you want online, just call them. Great folks! Posted by: Weasel at June 21, 2026 09:56 PM (8gM3l) 239
190 jah, most years. This year I was on vacation and nobody else felt like organizing it. Typically happens in May.
Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at June 21, 2026 09:22 PM (xcxpd) Oh, I'll watch for it next year! I have a database conference I attend every May, but hopefully I can make it. How big of a crowd is it? If you want someone else to do it next year, I have a cabin on Mt Hood I could offer. I'm mostly just a lurker, but I've been reading off and on for many years. Buddy who owns it was shooting gophers with target loads, and it failed to eject. This gun is pretty beat up, and has had a hard life, I expect.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 21, 2026 09:36 PM (1z8ji) Check the brass friction rings around the magazine tube. There is a configuration for heavy recouping loads, and a different one for light loads. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 21, 2026 10:05 PM (bhZyo) 244
